Soup incident
The Catalogue of Ships in the Iliad is, to a modern audiences, what classicists have called âboring as hell,â but I canât help but think that if you were watching Homer recite it it would have been more like when comedians go, âanybody here tonight from Chicago?â and the Chicagoans in the back start cheering
Homerâs like, âand there were forty black ships from⌠LOCRISâ and the Locrians in the crowd start going absolutely nuts

one detail in steven universe i think is super interesting is how characters hardly ever say 'i love you' or even that they're queer, they show it.
it's never explicitly stated that steven and connie are in love or dating, or that stevonnie is nonbinary, we can tell because of how close the two of them always are and from stevonnie's androgynous traits and other characters using the right pronouns for them.
they never use the term 'lesbians' for ruby and sapphire, or pearl and rose, or say they are and were in love, but with how intimate they are with each other and how they talk about being together, it's impossible to miss that they are. and garnet's wedding isn't ever described as a 'lesbian wedding', it's just a wedding, we know the two characters getting married are lesbians.
i'm pretty sure almost all of that was having to get it past cartoon network's bigoted censors, but the way they did it was so clever imo because it avoided the relationship dialogue being on-the-nose and made the storytelling way more compelling while not sacrificing any of the unapologetic queerness
Yes. (Though I actually once saw someone insist that this failure to use explicit words was COWARDLY--that they were refusing to confirm the queerness by not using the words, despite that they'd had a same-sex wedding on kids' TV and gotten banned in 17 countries for it.)
No, I don't know how many countries. It is probably not 17.
The interesting thing is that they treat the (presumably) straight characters the same as the queer ones that way. Greg never calls his relationship with Rose anything specific outside of "when I started dating your mother." Vidalia says "It's just been me and Yellowtail for a while" while picturing her wedding ring.
And the people who DO use specific words for these relationships are often wrong, intentionally misleading, or assuming. Greg calling Alexandrite his wife in a ruse for the Maheswarans. Uncle Andy asking which of the "girls" has gotta be "the wife" when he sees Greg has a kid (and mistakenly identifying Garnet). Ronaldo condescendingly saying Connie gets to use Rose's sword because "she's your girlfriend." Steven loudly saying Kiki and Ronaldo are "involved in a romantic relationship" when they're lying about it to end the Restaurant War.
There HAVE been just a few instances of explicitly named relationships, like Shep being named as Sadie's new partner, or Ronaldo saying he has a girlfriend (who turns out to miraculously exist). But it's notable that they aren't tiptoeing around the queer relationships refusing to define them while having no qualms about using specific language for the straight ones. The show repeatedly lets love be the important part and just shows us the love. What we call it isn't as important as how they show it.
And as a bonus, some of the people in this show who do stuff like getting married and living together as one entity don't identify as women. They're she/her characters, and present in a way the audience will interpret as overall femme/female, but they aren't women and wouldn't have any particular connection to terms like "girlfriend" or "wife." No one ever says "lesbians," but no one ever says "straight" either. It's beyond words.
And while there is a time and a place for explicitly named educational and instructive queer television, Steven Universe is more subtle in nearly all of its important messages. Nobody wrote this show saying "and now we will write an episode that is about teaching children that gay is OK." They simply showed a story where queerness is woven into its fabric by diverse and largely queer creators--characters whose queerness is part of them without being pointed out with its name on a trophy. The queerness is certainly very intentional, and that Crew bled to get it to us, but it ended up so seamlessly teaching us that we, the queer viewers (or our queer loved ones if it wasn't us) can also have stories that matter, can also be part of an exciting and brilliant and wholesome story without it being all about one thing, can also have a life that isn't a tragedy and a future that matters.
it's true and you should say it.
coming out of the tags to say that some of us have been saying this for years and have been called all manner of degenerates, perverts, and pedophiles over it, and we really deserve an apology we will never receive
We DO deserve a fucking apology we'll never get, and not to soapbox, but lemme just throw out another fucking explanation of exactly why this shit keeps happening in the slim chance that it helps at least one person not fall for it: Fascism in ANY form will ALWAYS present itself as reasonable to YOUR sensibilities. It preys on a lot of things, your disgust reaction, your fear reaction, your own shame, your need for a tribe, your need to feel like you're part of something bigger than yourself, your need to protect your resources, your need to boost your own ego, your need to feel better than others, and in my opinion, the worst thing of all that it can prey on is your WANT TO DO GOOD. It turns that Want To Do Good against you, gives you "acceptable targets" and sets you loose, thinking that you're being a fucking super hero. Fascism will ALWAYS feel okay when you're doing it because you understand why you're doing it because you've been told why you should be doing it by someone who's fucked the narrative to make you feel good about hurting other people because they've convinced you that you are protecting people by doing it!! Fascism tells you: "The sort of people who value a sex scene in a movie are perverts, and perverts are dangerous, right? Oh god... What if they're a rapist and that's why they like that sort of stuff? Yeah, that trans girl that made that post about movies needing sex scenes... She pisses in a diaper, that's fucking disgusting right? And she likes weird fiction... And diapers are meant for kids... So... Yeah... Exactly, you got it! See you figured out what she was too! So you should trust your gut with these people, you're really good at spotting them! You know when someone is evil! And you DEFINITELY should not listen to a pervert explain themselves, because... Right, exactly, what's the point? They're just going to lie about it and probably say gross shit to you." Did you catch how that worked? It let YOU make the conclusion. It let YOU answer the questions and start setting shit in stone in your own mind. And the next thing you know, you're using fiction as proof, anything outside of your own comfort levels as evidence, you've become an emotionally reactionary fascist who genuinely believes you are making the world better, and safer, for the people you love, and who love you in return. Fascism doesn't begin with violence, it begins with a kind hand held out in your direction from someone else who believes they're helping. You might not even realize you've fucked up. Ever. That's how it works. That's how it thrives.
THIS!!!
Degenerate art - Wikipedia
If we donât learn from history we are doomed to repeat it.
I'm going to say this knowing that I could get some push back from people who follow me, but if you've fallen into the whole proship/anti-ship discourse and you're on the anti-shipper side of things, then you're on the slide.
You're heading toward that fascist mindset, because the whole purity culture/anti-ship mindset is designed to do specifically that.
It's designed to make you feel like the Good Person doing the Good Things being the Good and Sensible One Standing Against all The Bad Things. And chances are part of it is because someone told you proshippers are pedophiles, or whatever - they might not have even said anything concrete and just let the implication hang there.
I'm not a fan of proship vs antiship just because stuff like that gets distilled down into very simple statements, and oftentimes simplicity loses the plot. But after a couple years I will say seeing "proshippers DNI" in someone's bio will cause me to either block them, or step back from them.
It makes me nervous because even if they're not actively being aggressive, they've got a foot on the slide and that's an easy slip. I've watched too many people go down that slide, and I've had my arm dislocated trying to help some of 'em.
And look, there's assholes everywhere. Every group, every ideal, every nook and cranny you can possibly find for people has assholes. If you're letting the assholes cause you to Other an entire group of people
You're On The Slide.
The sooner you come to terms with that, the sooner you can make changes, the less it's going to suck balls for you and everyone else.
I'd like to add:

The Prisoner đ¤
this is one of those things where itâs like. obviously this is not an instance of a systemic pattern of men subconsciously taking womenâs inferior knowledge for granted. but if you sense that your friends regularly feel like you are being patronizing in conversation with them, it may actually be worth reassessing how you talk to your friends. no one likes being treated like theyâre stupid or ignorant and if you are constantly appointing yourself teacher in conversations no one else wanted or expected to have a teacher, that gets aversive after a while.
there are social skills to be learned about infodumping! ways to check in with your friends before you do it and ways to do it without coming across like you are doing a dominance display. all of which is different from making yourself meeker to validate misogynist biases and menâs insecurities.
We donât know that the OP was neurodivergent or that the friend was neurotypical. They might both be autistic. I am not talking about maskingâI am talking about developing techniques to avoid damaging friendships. Have you never been in a situation where you were excited and prepared to talk about a special interest, only for someone else to kill steal the moment you open your mouth? This happens all the time in autistic friend groups and while itâs kind of silly to get upset about, people do. Itâs worth taking time to ask yourself what the experience of a social interaction is like for other people and if the answer you arrive at is âthey feel patronized and condescended to hurt because they think Iâm treating them like theyâre stupidâ, well. Yeah I mean I guess you can just cut them out of your life but if you actually like them you can try asking if itâs a good time to share what you know on the topic, or asking how theyâre feeling, or asking what part is making them feel intimidatedâsometimes enthusiasm is indistinguishable from anger.
Couple of thoughts here:
1) Truly sucks how many people seem to assume that anyone who complains about your behaviour is â¨neurotypical⨠(an attitude which often shades into 'only I get grace in how I behave because I'm The Neurodivergent One'). Your friends have their own needs going on too.
2) Relatedly, there is a difference between 'masking' and 'being responsive to people's needs'. The thing is that when you're hanging out with friends, the success metric is 'are we both enjoying this interaction?'
Part of the issue with masking is that, in an ableist world, the enjoyment and comfort of 'neurotypical' people is all that's valued, and neurodivergent people are expected to sacrifice their own comfort and enjoyment in a social situation to facilitate that. That's bad. But also flipping the script doesn't mean you've created an even playing field - at best it's recompense ("we should stop coddling them"). But like. An actually positive social interaction is one that both parties get something out of, and when we're talking about friendship and not eg a working relationship, yeah sorry man you do actually need to consider whether the other person is getting anything out of it. They're not morally obliged to have a relationship that's entirely for your sake, and a relationship that's entirely based around only one party's social needs is a bad one.
Which. To be clear.
3) There are lots of reasons somebody might not like you infodumping beyond ableism, whether or not they're 'neurotypical'. For example:
as previously said - sometimes you're trampling over something they were excited to share or talk about, and they didn't get to do their infodumping
you may very well be being unintentionally (or intentionally) condescending, and treating them as if they know nothing and you know everything, which is not respectful or kind
sometimes infodumping is done at people not with them. my mum (autistic) has described some interactions with her sister (autistic) as feeling as if she could be replaced with a cardboard cutout without changing the conversation, because her sister is treating her as an audience to talk at, not as a partner in the conversation. I have had interactions with people in my life where I've been pulled away from a conversation when they're mid-infodump and they've turned to another person and continued their train of thought unbroken to them. This makes the person you're talking to/at feel like they're not being valued, because they're not being valued - if your goal in the conversation is to have someone to unload your thoughts onto and who it is is largely irrelevant, that isn't interacting with them as another equally important person.
Sometimes people are interested in exploring something you brought up, and you're steamrolling past their attempts to ask about it or brushing them off, so they never get to engage with the stuff that's interesting to them in what you're saying.
Sometimes people just want to get a word in edgeways
None of these, or many other issues to take with infodumping, are exclusive to allistic people, nor are they inherently ableist. Being actually engaged with, heard, and treated as an active participant with your own thoughts and opinions are all just normal social needs that pretty much everyone has.
You don't have to always bend how you behave to meet what the other person needs. But if you're completely unwilling to ever account for the fact that other people also have social needs, then people will not like talking to you.
my controversial opinion is I donât think Zuko was confused by âmy first girlfriend turned into the moonâ
he was there during siege of the North. he infiltrated the spirit oasis. he has an uncle who studies spirits and the spirit world. he watched the sky go dark then the moon suddenly reappear like everyone else in the entire world did. and most importantly he watched zhao get eaten by a giant godzilla fish spirit.
his entire life since he saw that beam of blue-white light in the south pole has been âthis day has already been so goddamn weirdâ
The only really new information was that that was Sokkaâs girlfriend
Important opinion in the tags that I need to have be part of the post:
Also, Iroh was there? He literally watched Sokka make out with the moon spirit. And you want to tell me that a romantic sap like him would not have immediately told Zuko about this romantic tragedy? Please, Zuko has known about this for ages, he just knows that this is not an acceptable situation in which to say âyeah, I know.â
Sokka: âMy girlfriend turned into the moon.â
Zuko: âI know.â âYes.â âShe sure did.â âUh huh.â âTell me something new.â âAre we still talking about that?â âThatâs rough, buddy.â
[image: tags by samwisethebold: #itâs not that he doesnât get what sokka means #itâs that how on earth do you respond to that]
When you put it like that, this is actually a legendary display of tact on Zukoâs part
