I was searching the Latin/Greek section of a used bookstore for some ~aesthetic~ antique Latin books, and I came across this beautiful 1889 tome:
This is going to look great on my “look at me I’m a pretentious twat” bookshelf.
But then… the first few sentences read:
“In 1875 delegates of the Oxford University Press proposed to me that I should undertake the compilation of a new Latin-English Lexicon, of something the same compass as the Greek-English Lexicon of Liddell and Scott. I acceded to the proposal in the expectation, for which I had at the time what appeared to be good grounds, that I should obtain adequate assistance in the work. My hopes were, however, disappointed.”
Ouch.
He goes on to detail how he spent 12 years working on A all by himself. Then the university asked him to publish what he had, so he threw together the rest of the book, clearly caring less and less the further he got in the alphabet - the entire Q section has four entries - and published… this.
Obviously this is going straight onto my pretentious twat shelf as a goofy conversation starter, but it is interesting and potentially useful if obscure Latin words are your thing. (Did you know “ramen” is a hapax legomenon meaning “a small chip or shaving”?)
So if you ever come across a really obscure Latin word or name that you can’t find anywhere, hmu… but only if it starts with A.
They’ve been rebuilding the Tower of Babel, but this time they have a team of linguists on site. Every time God smites the builders and invents a dozen new languages, the linguists have a dozen decently sized translations in about a month and work can start up again.
The linguists have been really into it. They say the new phonemes are fascinating. As for God, I assume that at this point he’s just curious to see how far this goes.
To keep us on out toes, God gives the next group of builders an extra place of articulation called the flongus between the pharynx and the glottis, creating an entire new column of the IPA chart with sounds between sounds that are literally physiologically impossible for non-flongled people to replicate.
Improved symbols for the flongal plosives ("gacks"), flongal trill ("hacks"), flongal fricatives ("groans"), and and the flongal lateral approximant ("moans")
Update: The builders have now simply switched to communicating entirely through a universal sign language like they should've done to start with. No sounds need be spoken, flongal or otherwise. The Tower steadily rises. Be seeing you soon, God, you little bitch.
update: the builders are all speaking different sign languages now

Something I really struggle to get people to understand is that like. Sometimes there was no intentional homoerotic subtext, the author was just extremely misogynistic. Sometimes the author wasn't "secretly shipping" those two men, the author literally just hates women so much that they see them as being literally incapable of relationships with depth. Like this is kind of a big thing with misogyny actually. A lot of extremely misogynistic people truly believe that a man can only have meaningful and complex relationships with other men because they literally just think women are so inferior they only exist to birth children and clean the house. It's like when people say along the lines of "no one worships exclusively men quite like straight men do". It's just that phenomenon actually. That happens to be manifesting in a raging misogynist's writing. Writing a man character who literally only puts effort into his friendships with other men while completely ignoring his literal girlfriend or wife is actually an extremely straight thing to write. And that doesn't mean you can't ship those men or that there are no stories with actual intentional homoerotic subtext. I just think it's important to be able to recognize extreme misogyny in writing and acknowledge it without brushing it off and assuming good intentions when literally all evidence is screaming that this was a misogynistic writing choice and not a representing gay men choice.
My favorite scenes in the LotR books are the ones where Legolas has vital information and just decides it's not important to share.
Like when Gandalf spent literal PAGES trying to figure out why the vibes were off in Moria and Legolas chimes in with just "it's a balrog :) that shit's evil :) we're so fucked :)" like what do you MEAN you knew already and just didn't tell him??
Or at the beginning of Two Towers when Aragorn thinks there's something nearby so he puts his ear to the ground to listen, and then like 10 minutes later is like "hmmm i hear horses" and Legolas is just like "mm yep. there are 105 blond bitches with spears" like you just let your friend put his face in the dirt and you can SEE them??
Legolas please gain a sense of urgency
It's because legolas hasn't spent enough time with non-elves to remember that they don't know what he knows.
gandalf is scratching his head in moria, and legolas is thinking "oh man, the wizard noticed something off *besides* the obvious balrog that we all are aware of??"
"I wonder what aragorn is listening for? must be hard to hear, what with all of the horses. How many horses are there, actually? 1... 2... 3..."
"What do your elvish eyes see?" is Aragorn saying, as politely as possible, "Because the REST OF US are at a significant disadvantage, Prince Dipshit."
Bitty sends this to Jack and Jack tells him thick ice is slower and NHL ice is only 1.9 cm. And then he sends a follow up text that says, “I love you too, Bits. I’ll play on your thick figure skating ice for you.”
I feel like a lot of the discourse I hear about "all cops are bastards" or "there are no good cops" is fundamentally missing the point of what is meant by it. It's not a statement about the average, everyday moral character of individual police officers, it's making a practical observation that, when you agree to become a police officer, you are agreeing to undertake all of the contracted duties of a police officer when required, some of which are just straightforwardly morally evil.
This also is not making the claim that everything done by police is morally objectionable. In fact a lot of work that ends up being done by police departments is pretty unambiguously prosocial. But even if it were the case that most or almost all of it were, if you take a job at a food kitchen where the contract stipulates you need to shoot every 1000th client, you're still the guy who just agreed to murder a bunch of folks for your boss. "But 99.9% of it was just serving nutritious food to my community!" is not a good defense to the charge leveled especially when you could in your own time dedicate yourself to serving your community without also agreeing to wield violence against it.
For the record I don't think that the percentage of police work that is "good" is actually that high, but the point is that it is immaterial. The point is that intrinsic to the role is the use of state violence to uphold unjust structural power. That's the point; not that every cop is an asshole in an interpersonal way, or personally evil in their every day life (although many are). But I'm just as sure many are extremely personable or even typically fairly kind people who are uninformed or have bought the propaganda, to the point that they can ignore the reality of what they are doing.
Still acting as a state bastard when they help toss you in a cell for nonviolent drug crime, though. The system is evil and they have accessed to acting as its agents.
Also
If a whole group of people can commit crimes but get never persecuted because their colleagues will close ranks around them, it's only going to encourage more crime. Any system where people have power over others and there are no checks and balances or oversight from outside of their system will produce violence.
People shit on The Mandalorian a lot but it 100% is responsible for the resurgence of puppetry and practical effects in a lot of creature design and i think we owe it to Jon Faverau for making that choice and to Werner Herzog for pushing him to do it.
#Werner belted out “I VOULD LIKE TO SEE DA BABY” and that was it#Sold on the barrel
No but the baby yoda puppet was originally a placeholder to be replaced largely by CGI and Werner Herzog more or less threated to kill jon faverau if he didn't keep the puppet
Yup as Jon tells it, Werner called him a coward. So they went for it. And thank the gods!! He also said that the puppet makers kept "over delivering" and they thought they'd have a little guy who could move his head and they'd use it for shots of them in the distance- but Grogu moved so well, and it just kept getting better.

The Amnesty International report that JK Rowling is trying to censor through legal threats.
It can also be found on Google Drive here and on Bluesky here.
Please save and share this info where possible. This report has since been removed by Amnesty International due to legal threats of libel from JK Rowling. This information is no longer easily accessible.
When I was at the natural history museum, the fossil section had stickers on the glass to engage children - things like "Flap your arms like a pterodactyl" or "Measure your hand against the mosasaurus." However the first of these I encountered, which I found alarming and threatening without context, was a sticker reading "Struggle like you are stuck in a tar pit"
I feel like more bright colors, an exclamation mark, or a more whimsical font choice would've also helped here to indicate that it is a Fun Activity For Children. Instead it felt like getting instructed in my inevitable fate by a road sign
Official silly sign
This is an extremely threatening sign because if you happen to get stuck in a tar pit, you should absolutely not struggle. You'll increase the force of the suction and get dragged down faster.
Same with quicksand. Do not struggle.
This sign wants you to die.
Have you ever seen a tufted pygmy squirrel (Exilisciurus whiteheadi)? Found only in Borneo’s mountain forests—at elevations of more than 3,280.8 ft (1,000 m)—this tiny critter is one of the world’s smallest squirrels. It grows up to 3.4 in (8.6 cm) long. And at about 0.8 oz (22.7 g), adults typically weigh less than half a stick of butter! Easily recognizable thanks to its ear tufts, this species feeds primarily on moss and lichens.

I know the trauma of being a young man. No, not even young man, a little boy. But, like, there's a moment that every boy has in America, under patriarchy, where they have to start severing themselves from humanity. And it's not explicitly religious, but like, there's a three-year-old boy that's going to learn today that he's no longer allowed to cry. Does that make sense? Some three-year-old boy today is going to cry freely for the last time in his life.

the vast majority of diy an average person needs in their life for basic maintenance is absolutely dogshit easy
if you have like 5 hand tools and a can-do attitude congrats. youve solved 90% of your home maintenance problems. theres no need to ask and wait for other ppl to do it for you, or got forbid pay out the ass for maintenance guys. this is my universal advice for city dwellers
actually im not done. the 5 hand tools are a claw hammer, a screwdriver (the kind with swappable bits), combination pliers, an adjustable wrench, and a tape measure. now all you need is a phone with internet. go to yt and type in "how to do x". watch a 5 min video showing you how to do it. do it. congrats. you are now the handyman of the house and the world is your oyster
obligatory disclaimer for the piss on the poor website though. dont fuck with electricity if you dont know what youre doing, and save plumbing issues for later when youre not so green anymore. ok now go and be free
before: GOD DAMN MOTHERFUCK PIECE OF SHIT
after: hello mommy 🥺 could you pretty please help me with this 🥺 it’s me your baby boy
