For those newer to this blog and my ways, #perpetual perpetual ladies night aka PPLN is my initiative to make more posts about women and maintag them due to my frustration with fandom tags being male-dominated in most cases, and my reluctance to maintag my own posts. I have been slacking on this duty due to the horrors.

I like that Juri's presence in the student council tells us that being a lesbian does not automatically mean you escape patriarchy. That would be the lazy option in a story where Utena and Anthy discover their gay love and immediately waltz out of Ohtori hand in hand. The system is more resilient than that, and we're also not going to pretend that lesbian relationships are inherently positive--Juri and Shiroi's dynamic is toxic, to say the least, and contributes to what keeps Juri stuck in the dueling cycle.

I feel like I need to rewatch Juri's outburst towards Utena with full context, but it's interesting to me that Juri sees the trap Utena is in, but her reaction is to lash out at Utena for being foolish enough to walk into it. All women are rose brides absorbing the anger directed at the patriarchy...

You're right, I have been remiss in my sacred duty. While I reserve the right to change my mind later, here are the results of some initial contemplation:

Gay ace Mikage. He gets compared to robots and computers for being unfeeling, which is a classic ace experience. I got the impression he had romantic feelings for Mamiya but didn't fully recognize them as such, perhaps because he didn't experience the physical attraction component. While he internalizes Ohtori's toxic norms and has ghost Mamiya play the role of the rose bride, it's an entirely chaste variation-while this is potentially because Mamiya is dead, he's also Anthy in cosplay so Mikage probably could touch 'him' if he wanted to.

Aro-spec Nanami. Obviously Nanami's rejection of Touga's advances in the Sex Car is her recognizing that Ohtori's cycle of sibling abuse and incest is wrong, and that's not what she wants. However maybe she doesn't want *anything* like that--in some ways, insisting that no man could surpass Touga allows her to avoid being in a romantic relationship while also not being the pathetic girl who can't get a boyfriend. She's choosing to be single! Because she has standards! Her one boyfriend is a 'safe' elementary school kid, although ofc as the Black Rose arc reveals maybe that wasn't so safe after all... and she wishes Tsuwabuki wouldn't grow up so fast. This would equally support a wlw reading I think.

Blackmail held over someone’s head just to force them to flirt and make romantic advances on another person, so it looks like they wanted this relationship. Talks about marriage and happily ever afters together as a threat. “I love you, I love you, I love you” as a violation that you’re expected to smile at and be grateful for, because you’re supposed to want to be loved. noncon romance.

adding to this: feeling love against your will. love forced on you by some power beyond you. love that you know you wouldn’t feel if you weren’t blessed (cursed) by it. love that you don’t want and is ruining you and that everyone keeps praising you for feeling. love that everyone around you gets mad at you for rejecting anyway. love that’s made so overpowering that it wipes out any semblance of “you” that there is to make way for a thing that will love someone back.
