the funniest thing to do as an older sibling is to add an ‘s’ onto shit your younger sibling plays. “Oh, you’re playing pokemons? you’re booting up fortnites on the switch? skyrims?” because it’s the closest thing humans have to a rage spell lmao
OP you are missing the power of “the.” As in “the pokey-man” or “the fortnite.” Hell, I just say “the Costco” and everyone around me loses their shit.
Once you’re over the age of 30 you can put these two hands together and instantly deal out 15 points of psychic damage to anyone under the age of 21 within hearing range
[Video transcription: A man runs with the sun at his back, his shadow visible on the grass as he goes. He is narrating while he films and runs.
Man: Oh my god! You’re coming! You’re comin’ after me! I don’t know- ohhh, jesus, here you-
As he speaks, he turns the camera to look over his shoulder, revealing about six tiny kittens running through the grass after him.
Man: Oh m’god! You’re still comin’!
He turns the camera back forward, still running.
Man: Ohh m’god! You’re gonna eat me alive! I don’t know what to do!
He turns the camera again as the closest kitten reaches his feet.
Man (voice rising in pitch): Oh my god, now it’s got me! Oh m’god! Ohhhh god, ohhh…
With this imitation of dying gasps, he drops to the grass; the camera captures the remaining five kittens as they catch up to him. The last kitten is able to face the camera directly.
Man: Hi.
Video ends.]
Limitations breed creativity
Avatar: Magic is limited to the four elements (and some spirit stuff). Furthermore, everyone except the Avatar is limited to at most just one element.
The magic battles are spectacular displays of creativity where each element is utilized to its full potential in a variety of ways.
Harry Potter: Magic is basically limitless, with there being a spell to do pretty much anything and any wizard can learn it, including an instant-death spell.
Which is why fighters on both sides only ever go for the best and most effective spells (Avada Kedavra for bad guys, Expelliarmus for good guys) and magic battles look like this:
I know what you’re talking about. With the most obvious example being Spiderman vs. Superman.
Spiderman’s powers being basically the same for 60 years now, and writers had to come up with new ways for him to use his abilities.
While Superman (especially in the silver age) is pulling new powers out of his ass at every given opportunity.
But I think unlike Harry Potter where there’s no reason for wizards to use anything except their go-to spell, Superman does use the full array of his powers to deal with different foes.
He doesn’t instantly go for freeze breath or heat vision every single time, even though they’d probably be the most effective powers for most situations.
I recommend reading Brandon Sanderson’s essay on his Second Law of Magic, in which he talks about one of his guiding principles when building magic systems: that the limitations are more interesting than the powers. He actually talks about Superman and how the limitations on his powers are what make him a good character, and talks about the Wheel of Time, which has a similar system to ATLA. It’s a long essay, but well worth the read if you’re at all interested in world building.
Here’s the link to his First Law and Third Law as well. The third law especially touches upon some of the concerns/criticisms brought up about HP and Superman.
why are cyberpunk tabletop things so obsessed with decency and personhood being tied to how many surgeries you haven’t had
“if you have a prosthetic it takes out a part of your soul” like thanks shadowrun
in early cyberpunk, the point was more along the lines of “if we integrate technology into our bodies we risk becoming dependent upon the people and institutions who control that technology, who would then use that to enrich themselves at our expense”
unfortunately that was too anti-corporate for American mainstream culture so as cyberpunk moved out of its niche it became “uhhh it eats your soul I guess”
tags by @rubyvroom:
#this is important context #if you weren’t around at the time it is easy to miss but #anti-corporate sentiment was pretty much the lynchpin of cyberpunk until there were movies and games making money off it #it was the 1980s you guys #the entire point was that corporations are evil and technology should be used to circumvent them and escape their control over our lives #and not be used to make ourselves into another product #now that the internet is entirely monetized and corporate it’s harder to remember that originally it was synonymous w freedom & independence
Yes, exactly. Cyberpunk is anti-corporations, not anti-body-modification.
the best way of expressing this for modern cyberpunk would probably be “if every legal surgery you had put another Alexa on you permanently”, complete with the need to register it under your name and the surveillance. think of intentional obsolescence when your working limbs depend on it working. think of having an older model and being forced to upgrade when it’s still working fine, unable to shop around for cheaper versions because it’s either all the same legal model from the same company or it’s hacked together on the streets and not legal to carry

fuck your doctor’s feelings. this sounds harsh but it needs to be. i cannot count the number of times i have encountered people who were not being adequately treated by their doctors, often not even diagnosed, often not even being believed, but were too afraid to switch doctors because of their doctor’s feelings. people are suffering and sometimes dying because they are afraid of hurting the feelings of someone who is failing at their job. not all doctors are equally qualified to treat all conditions, not all doctors are going to be good for every patient, and not all doctors are good at their jobs at all.
your doctor’s job is to treat you and if they suck at their job, get a new one. get as many as it takes. their feelings are not more important than your life and well-being.
the one problem i have with people my age and younger is that a lot of us do not have hands on hobbies. like i have spoken to so many people my age who go to work, go to school and then fuck around on their phone/computer for hours and then ???????? like no wonder ur depressed and have low confidence in urself. u need to get ur hands on something, feed those dopamine receptors! learn how to play guitar, garden, scrapbook, fucking make model trains. i don’t give a shit, MAKE SOMETHING!!
it feels better than drugs when i finish making a thing—and then show it off or gift it.
and then so people my age say to me ‘well—i can’t draw/paint/knit/etc. like you can. my stuff would be terrible.’ yeah, well duh—a part of developing skill is sucking at something and then practicing it over and over and over again until you suck less. u’ll have a hard time feeling lonely or bored when you can’t stop thinking abt a technique you want to try or something you want to make for someone else. making things has SAVED MY LIFE. it gave me a reason to keep living day after day when i wanted to die.
making things improved my generational relationships (when i worked for the newspaper i would talk to customers abt jamming recipes or cross-stitch, one of my grandmas always gives me pattern books and tell me abt when she knitted things for mom, my other grandma is giving me a wedding quilt that HER grandma gave her 50 years ago because she knows i will appreciate it). it also got me likeminded friends who also make things.
take a ceramics class! pick up water colors, bake cakes! learn to work on cars! make soap. DO SOMETHING THAT DOESN’T INVOLVE STARING AT A SCREEN.
holy fucking shit people simulated the 302 neurons in a worm’s brain with software, put it in a Lego robot and it behaves like a worm
http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/weve-put-worms-mind-lego-robot-body-180953399/?no-ist
upload the nematode
upload the nematode / lock it in a box / keep it there for fifty years / then see if it talks!
but, like, it’s a worm. its behavior isn’t that complex.
if it’s not accurately behaving like a worm, how would we tell?
^ an important point. IIRC they don’t even really have a complete characterization of the worm’s nervous system, so C. legogans here is at best a preliminary test. Still pretty cool, though.
I looked at the article, and to my mind the significant thing here is that the lego robot demonstrated consistent behavior with no programming. They didn’t program any stimulus-response behavior into it. They just gave it their best approximation of worm neurons, and it made up the behavior.
I may be misunderstanding some aspect of this but to me that feels kinda huge?
They made an artifical reactive set of neurons with consistent observable behaviors. Yeah, this is a big deal. It’s the first step towards ‘uploading’ minds.
oh, worm?
You wouldn’t download a worm
Quick ideas for your desert campaign since you guys liked the ocean one
There is a little shrine that offers shade and a place to sit. A disembodied voice asks you about happenings in the world, what you’ve been up to, and so on. If you give them entertaining stories, or give valuable info, the voice will give advice on how to better survive in the area, or produce a small trinket.
A group of hooligans who get around the desert on shields and sails made of capes who ride the crazy winds.
A crazy looking old man is preaching about the end times. He might be on to something. The sun has slowly been taking longer to come up and longer to go down and keeps getting hotter. Its almost unbearable. Eventually it scorches the land and burns crops, small animals, and even starts small fires.
An old monsterous being has woken up deep below the earth. Its slowly digging its way out of the earth and a large sink hole has appeared where you think the mouth is.
A wizard is trying to bring back an old ocean that dried up long ago, and all the sea creatures with it.
Quick reminder to feel free to send me asks and questions about anything you might need!
Got a request for even more desert and sand stuff so here you go! Next post is going to be winter themed at request.
Under a few layers of sand you find a trap door. It opens up into an upside down pyramid dungeon filled with all sorts of traps and monsters.
Help a NPC out. He calls himself an “archaeologist”, but really just seems like a grave robber. When is it even okay to dig someone up? Help him dig up a site to do “research” or whatever.
An oasis thats actually just a mimic or four.
A crazy wizard is summoning storms and messing up
There is a lush green forest in the middle of nowhere. There is rain, animals,
What you think is a sphinx is actually a petrified creature.

About the German mentality
I have seen many things being said about the German people…
About our angry way of speaking, of people confusing Germans with Bavarians, of clichés and the everpresent ghost of nationalsocialism.
But never, I repeat, never have I, as a German, seen any image that represents this nation’s mentality as perfect as this:
Ordnung muss sein :D
Hello! If you don't mind me asking, how long is a typical chapter for you? And where do you get your inspiration from? -Love, an aspiring writer who absolutely adores your work and would like to know how other people write
Currently for GotE, I try to aim for around 5k words a chapter, though sometimes it’s more or less depending on the plot beat I end on. My real goal is to make sure something happened, in a way that answers a question or solves a problem, while introducing a new one. 5k’s been a good benchmark, considering the length of GotE as a story, but it can vary.
I like to think about how I can make a story fun, or how I can create a new or intriguing character motivation to propel the plot. One of my biggest goals is to not only enjoy writing the story and bring it to life, but also make it something that can surprise and entertain my audience. What happens if I pull the rug out from this character? What if due to one event getting triggered, this event can’t happen, or something different happens entirely?
My inspiration often comes from mystery novels, music, and various experiences + research. Mysteries are my favorite thing, and are great to read and analyze for how they introduce bits of information at a time, are solvable if you pay attention, but still can blindside with the ending. Music-wise, it varies. Fleet Foxes and stuff like Blondie, Cyndi Lauper or Thompson Twins are big ones for atmosphere and tone. I also just had an idea for the end of the first half of GotE from a horror movie soundtrack (it’s not as scary as it sounds, I swear). I tend to derive inspiration for setting and symbolism from experiences in botany/entomology/ecology.
I simply do a lot of mental and writing exploration as well. I tend to like stories that are fish-out-of-water, or introducing the fantastic to the mundane. Making AUs is a fun exercise in this way, because it’s taking certain personalities and establishing them in different experiences/situation.
