I'm barbex, I have a tag for everything. This tumblr is for writing advice, writing resources and indie publishing. Some content may be unsuitable for minors. All writing is writing, fanfic is valid. I'm german, write in english, and I'm older than you. Feel free to ask me things! she/her. I also write but I'm too shy/anxious/panicked to talk about my WIPs here. I run the-wip-project, fictober-event, audiobarbex. Also: fangirling: barbex, fics and original works: AO3/barbex --Â barbex everywhere on the internet.
Hi I'm barbex! I live on the internet and I write a lot. This is the tumblr where I collect writing advice and sometimes write some of my own.
Why the name? This was meant to be a group project of three writers, committing to 960 words every day. But life got in the way and that collaboration never happened. I still like the name though.
Bio: Growing old disgracefully. Angry engineer. barbex everywhere, she/her.
Not recommended for under 18. I'm not responsible for parenting other people's offspring. Adult conversations will not be filtered for children. Writers can write what they want and apart from content warnings are not responsible for what readers choose to read.
All my fics, including original fiction, on AO3: AO3/barbex.
I helped publish a tumblr anthology in 2017: New Tales From Old Yarn

If you are receiving a warning that your password has appeared in a data breach from another site and is no longer secure, you will need to change your password to a stronger one before you can log back in.
If you are still logged in on any device, please make sure your email address is up to date before logging out or resetting your password, or you may lose access to your account.
Check below the cut for information on how to check or update your email address, and how to change or reset your password.
Posted: 20:45 UTC 31 July, 2026
Please follow these steps to check and update your email address. If you don't know your password, or if your password is insecure, you will need to reset your password â which requires you to have access to your account's email address.
How do I check what my accountâs email address is?
If you are logged in:
Go to your Preferences page (Select "Hi, [USERNAME]!" at the top of the page, and choose "My Preferences" from the drop-down list)
Click on the âChange Emailâ button at the top of the page
Your email address will be listed on that page, next to âCurrent emailâ
If you are not logged in:
Check your email account for recent emails from AO3, such as subscription notifications or kudos and comment emails.
Look at the âTo:â field to see what email address is associated with your account.
You will need to enter this email address exactly as it is listed here in order to receive a password reset email.
How do I change my email address? What if I don't have access to my old email address?
You don't need access to your old email address to change it to a new one, as long as you also know your current password.
Go to your Preferences page (Select "Hi, [USERNAME]!" at the top of the page, and choose "My Preferences" from the drop-down list)
Click on the âChange Emailâ button at the top of the page
In both the âNew emailâ and âEnter new email againâ fields, enter an email address that you have access to
In the âPasswordâ field, enter your current password
Click the âConfirm Emailâ button
On the next page, make sure that the banner displays the correct new email address
Click the "Yes, Confirm Email" button
Check your new email address for an email titled â[AO3] Confirm your email changeâ
Click on the confirmation link in that email, making sure to open it in a browser where you are already logged in
Go to the âChange Emailâ page and double-check that your âCurrent emailâ has been successfully updated.
If you still see the banner saying your email change is pending, the most likely reason for this is that you were logged out before you clicked the confirmation link. Make sure to log in to your account before following the email confirmation link, or open the link in a browser where you are already logged in.
I know my current password, but I'm afraid my password is insecure. How can I change my password to a stronger one?
First, refer to the above instructions for checking or updating your email address, so that you can receive a password reset in case your password is insecure. Then:
Go to your Preferences page (Select "Hi, [USERNAME]!" at the top of the page, and choose "My Preferences" from the drop-down list)
Click on the âChange Passwordâ button at the top of the page
Enter your current password into the âOld passwordâ field
Enter your new password into both the âNew passwordâ and âConfirm new passwordâ fields
Click the âChange Passwordâ button
You will be automatically logged out on all devices.
If, upon logging in, you receive a message saying your password is insecure, then the new password you chose was insecure and you can't use it to log back in. You will need to reset your password (refer to the below instructions) and select a more secure password this time. You can use a password generator to choose a stronger password.
I don't know my current password/my password is insecure, but I know and have access to my account's email address.
In a private/incognito browser, go to the Reset Password page: https://archiveofourown.org/users/password/new (also available by clicking the âForgot Password?â link on the login form)
Enter the email address associated with your AO3 account
Check your email for the password reset email
Click the âuse this link to choose a new passwordâ link in the email
Enter a new, secure password
You will be automatically logged in on this device, and automatically logged out on all other devices.
If you continue to receive the message that your password is insecure, then the new password you chose was also insecure. You will need to reset your password again and select a more secure password this time. You can use a password generator to choose a stronger password.
I tried resetting my password, but it didn't work. Help?
The most likely reasons the password reset didn't work are:
You are entering the wrong email address for your AO3 account. Refer to the above instructions on how to check what your account's email address is.
Your email provider is blocking emails from AO3 or sending them to spam/social folders. Search for an email titled â[AO3] Reset your passwordâ.
Your email account doesn't have enough storage and can't receive new emails. You'll need to delete old emails, photos, or videos to empty your storage before requesting a password reset.
You requested multiple password resets in a short time period, resulting in either a âRetry laterâ page or the link in the first password reset email becoming invalid. Please wait at least one hour before trying again, only submit the form once, and make sure you are using the link in the most recent password reset email.
The new password you chose was insecure, so you can't use it to log back in. You will need to reset your password again and select a more secure password this time. You can use a password generator to choose a stronger password.
I don't know my password/my password is insecure, and I don't know or have access to my account's email address.
You will need to submit a Support ticket containing the following information:
your username
your accountâs current email address (if you know it)
an email address that you can access and would like to update your account's email to (enter this email into the Email field so we can contact you)
Support will begin the account recovery process with you, which will ask you for further proof of account ownership. Please be patient, as there are many AO3 users who are also submitting account recovery tickets right now.
We have temporarily lifted the block preventing users from logging in to AO3 with an insecure password. If you have been receiving this message recently, please immediately do the following:
Log in to your account using your compromised password.
Verify that the email on your account is one that you have access to and that it is up to date.
âa. To do this, go to your Preferences page and select "Change Email" at the top of the page. Your email address will be listed on that page, next to "Current email".
âb. If you don't have access to this email account, update your email before you change your password. You don't need access to your old email address to change it to a new one, as long as you also know your current password.
âc. If you do have access to this email account, copy-paste the email address so that you can correctly enter it into the password reset form. If you do not enter your email address exactly as it is listed here, you will not receive the password reset email.
Change your password to a unique, strong password by following the steps in our Archive FAQ: How do I change my password?
âa. We strongly recommend that you use a password generator to select a new password. Most browsers and devices have a built-in password generator, or you can use this one: 1Password's Password Generator.
âb. Use a password manager to set and remember your passwords for you. If you don't want to install third-party software, you can use the password manager provided by your browser or device.
If you are still unable to access your account, you will need to work with Support to complete the account recovery process described in the previous post. Please provide them with your username and the name of the email account you have lost access to. You must wait at least a week so that Support can check that the original email address is truly inactive, and provide multiple forms of evidence that the account is truly yours. The account recovery process will not proceed if you are unable to provide sufficient proof that you are the owner of the account.
Incredibly violent take of mine but I actually donât think you need to relate to a story in any way to enjoy it. You can enjoy a story even if you canât point at a character and insert some aspect of your personality or identity into them. In fact I would argue the need for a character like that to be present in every single story you experience is a sign of stunted growth.
So, I've wanted to write a book for a while now. I have an idea and a basic plot, but I don't quite know how to start it. Any advice?
Wow⌠youâre at the Exciting Part. :) âŚNo, seriously: this is the point from which everything flows, from the novelistâs point of view. Itâs an exciting place to be, and at the same time SO intimidating, because GOD can anything happen from here onward.
(Iâm assuming that weâre talking about fiction, BTW.)
Anyway. After 50+ books I know what I do at this point â pretty much â but thatâs not going to do you a lot of good, since many of the opening moves in the game for me are now accordioned together into something that happens very fast and in which the individual movements and sequences can be kind of difficult to tease out for an observer. Let me instead describe to you how I would work this kind of situation out when I first got started selling books to editors.

Has everyone been properly invited to this trip? If we're going to make it to our destination, we'll need a lot of people helping out!
Reblog this post and tag someone you think might enjoy the Writeblr Summerfest...but even more importantly, reblog this post and tell everyone else why you love that tagged person's writing so much!
Certain writing habits feel good, which is why we keep getting trapped by them. Not writing every day during active drafting, only writing when we feel like it - these are traps! And I explain why.
Make them lose a substantial amount of blood. For reference: For an adult human, about 8% of their body weight is blood. They can lose around 10% of that without much trouble, 20% will cause serious symptoms, more than 50-60% is generally incompatible with life. These numbers are estimations. The slower this blood loss, the better the body can compensate for it. Losing a significant amount of blood will affect the character's consciousness and take days or weeks to recover from.
Fever and malaise. Injuries are stressful. Inflammation is a natural response to that. Destroyed cells release proteins which can cause moderate fever (too much of that can cause kidney failure which is why excessive beatings can kill people, even when they don't initially sustain any life-threatening injuries). The character will be in pain, they'll feel like shit, they'll need plenty of rest and tender caretaking without their limb rotting off.
If you have to infect them, give them an abscess. That way, the pus and bacteria are walled off and can be drained out (by cutting the abscess open), with lower risk of it getting into the blood stream. It's also risky but much more survivable than phlegmone (diffuse infection of soft tissue).
Drugs. Just drug 'em. Ye Olde Opium/Laudanum will put them in a scarily deep sleep while Love Interest can sit there and hold vigil. Now this might also kill them so use with caution.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS WRITING ADVICE NOT MEDICAL ADVICE
Oh no! The Character has an ouchie! And they can't go to urgent care to have it looked at because that's not invented yet! Whatever shall we do!!!
Keep. It. Clean. Carefully and gently clean out gross stuff and things that do not belong in there, do not introduce foreign matter, and keep that wound covered.
The body will support Caretaker in this. Exudation is a natural defense mechanism to flush out germs and other dirt. Normal exudate is clear, with a slight yellow tinge, and almost odorless (wounds do have a characteristic smell, but they don't stink). Excessive exudate can form crusts around the wound, those should be cleaned away. Boiled water or saline solution is probably the safest bet for wound irrigation. Gentle mechanical cleaning (wiping with wet cloth) is appropriate.
Wounds want to be kept moist. Ointment can help with that, and also prevent the bandage from sticking to the wound. For a premodern setting, lard (rendered pig fat) is probably not a terrible option. It contains almost no water or sugar, so doesn't grow mold, and the grease prevents the tissue from drying out. Still, Caretaker will probably want to soak that bandage before they remove it.
The bandage should be clean linen. Not wool. If Caretaker has to rip up their clothes for bandages, at least use the undergarment, and the parts of it that are less dirty (sleeves).
A cavernous wound (ie from a drained abscess) might need to be tamponaded, that is, lined with a strip of wet cloth, to keep it open and help with drainage.
Various herbs, honey, spices, etc, have historically all been used to promote healing, some more successfully than others. However, everything is potentially contaminated with germs and fungal spores. Putting mashed plant matter that hasn't been otherwise treated into wounds is always a gamble.
Disinfection is a possibility, but an effective disinfectant will also damage healthy tissue. If Character has their wound bathed with wine or spirits every time the bandage is changed, that wound will become necrotic.
Stitches are likewise a double-edged sword. Pulling the edges of a deep wound together will make it heal quicker and more smoothly, but it also retains exudate in a warm, anaerobic environment, which makes an ideal growing environment for nasty bacteria. Balance risk and reward appropriately.
Some additional thoughts:
Medicine has taken unimaginable leaps during the last ~150 years. Things that would have been a death sentence to our ancestors are barely more than a nuisance to us. As a result, we have a fundamentally different attitude towards treatments, especially invasive treatments. We do surgeries as precaution or to restore optimal function, where in the past, surgery was often a last resort. It was very risky, and ran a good chance of killing the patient, so it would only be done if they would die anyway.
That doesn't mean doctors and surgeons of the past were helpless, there are a lot of amazing and very sophisticated treatments, that are older than you'd think. For as long as we have been human we have tried to heal each other, and were often successful.
Just because we know humoral pathology is wrong doesn't mean it's stupid. It's based on very solid observations of health and the human body. It was the accepted theory for a long time. It makes no sense for a doctor in that setting to reject it.
The human body is at once more resilient and more fragile than most people think. Humans can walk off devastating injuries, a lot of things will sort themselves out. However, once a tipping point is reached and the body can no longer compensate for whatever is going wrong, there's no turning that process around. This is why systemic infections are so dangerous: Bacteria/toxins overwhelm the immune system, everything is poisoned, multiple organ failure, death. It's very difficult to come back from that, even today.
THIS IS WRITING ADVICE, NOT MEDICAL ADVICE. In real life, there's no benevolent writer that makes sure you get the best possible outcome. Real illnesses don't care how relevant you are to the plot. Have that looked at by a professional.
Prior to the 19th century, the Western world had no reliable anesthesia. Alcohol was used & was far from great. If I remember correctly, Abigail Adams underwent one surgery & died rather than going through a second.
If you want some historical medicine texts, look for the following historical authors:
Galen (3rd Century Greek) who wrote on humoral theory.
Hildegard of Bingjn â high medieval German nun who wrote about medicine and other things
Trotula â a collection of three 12th century texts on womenâs health
For non-European ideas, consider Tan Yunxianâs âSayings of a Female Doctorâ from the Ming Dynasty for Chinese practices. For India, Ayurveda is still practiced though I would encourage spending time diving into how it may have changed over time.
I donât have a lot of time tonight, but I have copies of Hildegardâs medical text, as well as Trotula if anyone is looking for something particular.
The interesting thing about Humoral theory, Chinese traditional medicine, and Ayurveda is that they all looked at disease as being caused by a bodily imbalance. All three believed that foods could cause or relieve these imbalances. I donât wish to overly conflate them â they all are distinct. However if youâre creating a low-science fantasy world, food should be part of how health & healing is approached.
In the Renaissance, there was the rise of miasma theoryâ that âbad airâ caused disease. This carried through to the early 20th century in opposition to germ theory. There are some traditional ideas of health that still believe that fans or air conditioning are bad for your health, especially at night.

She got the idea for the study while walking with her advisor at Stanford to discuss her thesis topic, and the paper she eventually published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology in 2014 is sharp enough that it should have ended the seated meeting on the day it came out.
She ran 4 experiments on 176 people. Same person tested twice. Once sitting, once walking. The creativity tasks were the standard ones psychologists have used for decades to measure how good a brain is at generating novel useful ideas.
81% of participants in the first experiment produced more creative ideas while walking than while sitting. In the second experiment, 88%. In the third, 100%. Every single person walked into a more creative version of themselves. On average, people generated 60% more novel useful ideas the moment their legs started moving.
The skeptical question is the obvious one. Maybe it was the fresh air. Maybe it was the scenery passing by. Maybe it was the change of environment doing the work, not the walking itself.
Oppezzo killed every one of those explanations with one experimental decision. She put people on a treadmill facing a blank wall. No scenery. No fresh air. No environmental change. Just legs moving in place while staring at white drywall. The 60% boost held.
Then she ran the experiment that closed the case completely. She took participants outside in two conditions. Half of them walked through a Stanford courtyard. The other half were pushed through the exact same courtyard in a wheelchair. Same outdoor stimulation. Same scenery passing at the same speed. The only difference was whether the legs were moving.
The walkers produced dramatically more novel high-quality ideas than the wheelchair group. The outdoors did almost nothing on its own. The walking did everything.
She also tested the opposite kind of thinking. Convergent thinking. The kind where there is one right answer and you have to narrow down to it. Word puzzles where 3 words share a hidden fourth word that connects them. The seated participants did slightly better on these. Walkers got slightly worse.
Walking is not a general intelligence enhancer. It does one specific thing. It opens up the divergent search inside your brain. The part that generates options. The part that produces unexpected connections. The part that takes a problem and finds five ways into it instead of one.
When you need to converge on the single right answer, sit down. When you need to find the answer in the first place, get up.
The mechanism is now well understood. Walking selectively activates what neuroscientists call the default mode network, the system inside your brain that runs when you are not consciously focused on anything. The DMN is where mind-wandering happens. Where memories cross-reference each other. Where ideas that have been sitting in separate folders inside your head finally bump into each other.
When you sit at a desk and force yourself to concentrate, you suppress the DMN. When you walk at a natural pace, the executive part of your brain gets just busy enough handling the walking that the DMN comes online and starts doing the work that focus was blocking.
The most useful finding in the entire paper is the one almost nobody quotes. The boost did not turn off the moment people stopped walking. Participants who walked first and then sat back down stayed elevated. Their next round of seated creativity work was still significantly better than people who had been sitting the whole time. The rest lingered for at least several minutes after the legs stopped moving.
You do not need to do creative work while walking. You need to walk before the creative work. The brain holds the state.
Since I was giving out homework last week for @the-wip-project Summer Writing to take notes about when, where, and how much we write, let's see how it looked for me:
I don't even care all that much about the specific numbers, but it is quite clear that writing on the couch with or without the TV on, is not very efficient. That was to be expected, of course.
There's a reason why I'm calling the former kid's room/guest room my writing room. It may not be much but it is a room with a computer where I actually write. Note to self: utilize this more.
Next I should try that thing with writing notes about what I want to write before I start. Maybe then I'll be faster?
The most interesting question you can ask about any character is not what do they want. it's what do they believe they deserve. because those two things are almost never the same and the gap between them is where your entire story lives. a person can want love completely and believe they don't deserve it and that belief will destroy every good thing that comes toward them in ways they won't even notice they're doing. write the gap. the gap is the character.

if you think no one will like what you make, this is your sign to get to work on that project. No one is telling you you canât publish that book, write that story, draw that art, animate that animation. Sure, life will complicate things, but you shouldnât feel forced to do or create what others want. They can create what they want. You create what you want and post what you want.
Feel free to even talk about your story or OCâs or art or whatever in the comments, Iâm going to reply to them all! And feel free to reblog this post.
Iâve finished Gail Carrigerâs writing-craft-book âThe Heroineâs Journeyâ today and what a revelation it has been. This book gave me so much insight in what kind of stories I write and why Iâm currently so terribly stuck on that one WIP.
In short: The Heroâs Journey is about the solo hero, itâs a story of loneliness and revenge. The Heroineâs Journey is a story about connection, about building a network, a family succeeding by helping each other. (The terms Hero/Heroine have nothing to do with the gender of the protagonist by the way.)
Now in the fanfic Iâm currently writing, the source story calls for a heroic moment of self sacrifice (which isnât really one because the player character survives of course) and I have been struggling so much with the build-up to this moment. (Why oh why do I put so much writing energy in a retelling? Who asked for this?)
As I read Gailâs book, I finally realized why I had so much trouble. I was trying to cram a Hero story into a Heroineâs Journey and it just didnât fit. My guy has been smacking people over the head for 28 chapters to get everyone together and overcome prejudice and religious bs to save the world, and here I am, trying to get him to abandon everything for some stupid hero moment. No wonder it didnât work.
Iâm thoroughly recommending this book, especially for writers who write stories with âfound familyâ, âthe gang gets togetherâ, âme and my friends gonna kick your assâ, and that sort of thing. You know what I mean? That shit we love? Thatâs the Heroineâs Journey.
Yes, I bought the book again, this time in paper version because if there ever was a book where I needed to stick colourful little thingys on the margins, itâs this one.
Iâm still highly recommending this book for all writers.
