I've started time tracking my daily language immersion and comparing it on the daily to an hourly rate to reach my language learning goals in hours immersed.
For some it could be considered stressful to pressure yourself to immerse for many hours per day. Right now I feel like it's not only beneficial for my language learning progress, but also keeping me away from empty doomscrolling etc and I feel like my brain is actually growing back day by day lmao.

I'm realizing reading books everyday is basically the antidote to online brainrot. I want to make it my goal this year to read for a few hours every day (there'll definitely be days I won't make it).
I love reading novels in languages I'm learning. I'm getting into reading novels in Japanese (albeit with book + audiobook combination).
One thing about Trump tearing apart the whole "(US) America leader of the free world" is this thing never really worked. Now, no one can deny how influential the US has been in developing the world in the last 80 years, and modern societies are built on the stability the US provided.
But it's outdated. Having one, potentially 2-3 powerhouses in the world that sets the stage in their selfish game for power and profit as every other country is passified is anti democratic. You inherently can't dominate a 'free world' which is what the US has tried to do.
I want Europe along with the Commonwealth and the US' Asian allies to finally be free and assertive! Make alliances not centered on the US, make alliances that are mutually empowering, turn to the rest of the world and lift it out of the exploitative structures we have implemented. Restructure outside of the US to create an actual democratic leadership of the world. Globally, we need countries coming together to decide, not one big dog in the house chasing down and barking up loudly whenever it's not according to their plans.
New world order, please!
So I don't want EU to be the new US, but EU sets the example in how a new vision for working together between countries can work that isn't the US type dominance-protectorship.

Itās funny but incredibly telling how entitled/ignorant/insensitive some of these people areā¦ idk if itās an education gap or purposeful ignorance.
The really bewildering thing to me is that I remember when you needed to get up and pull a dictionary off the shelf, or visit a library to look up the facts you needed. Now people have all kinds of information literally at their fingertips and they canāt be bothered to use it.

Like its also English speakers in general. They'll say shit like it's just fine for them to move to another country and become something like a doctor without even remotely speaking the local language.
It's the same kind of people who move to a country in Europe (tbh sometimes from another place in Europe, too) and bitch about how they're discriminated against and not welcome because they stand out
When they haven't even tried to speak the language or absorb local culture. You're not discriminated against because you move to a place that isn't multi cultural or English language based, you're an entitled prick
Not to say racism doesn't function in top of all this, but language and culture is immensely important factors for fitting in anywhere in Europe.
While Europe (and Asia. And Africa. And... everywhere) certainly has racism and discrimination, I feel like USAmericans are getting DESPERATE talking about this so as to unload shame about the state of their country currently. While ironically highlighting their lack of any understanding of societies outside their own sphere.
Like they'll go on about how Europe invented racism - not accurate since racism has always existed, but still valid because Europe did invent scientific racism and modern colonization - they still miss the point about how they, as always, are inserting their own POV as the standard.
Being aware of racism in Europe isn't just about skin color or US racial history when much of it is based in a different perception of belonging and ethnicity that has literally lead to genocide and prosecution of ethnic white minorities through history. Europe racism is not US history, politics, identity focus, etc.
Europeans sometimes protest critique about their racism due to lack of education or due to racism, BUT also because we're tired of a useless US system being forced upon us for critiquing racism, when it doesn't work the same way in Europe nor in most other places that are not a conglomeration of disparate immigrant societies.
US people don't know how to make Europe better for either immigrants or natives. European immigrants and natives can figure it out on our own, as there are, believe it or not, plenty of educated and capable minority people in Europe raising these conversations using European language and thinking.
I think it's funny that in French the word for "unicorn" is "licorne" because:
The word "unicorne" was first reanalyzed as "une icorne"
The definite article was then added, making it "l'icorne"
The new definite form was reanalyzed once again, resulting in "une licorne"
Before any anglophones get on the French people's case on this, consider for a second what y'all did when you reanalyzed the Spanish "el lagarto" ("the lizard") as "alligator."
Reanalysis is fun.
Oh yeah, everybody does this*. Another English example is "apron", which was once "napron" until we reanalyzed the initial N as part of the indefinite article (a napron -> an apron).
A fun one in Arabic is the city of Alexandria in Egypt. Quite understandably, Arabic speakers heard the initial "Al" and thought "ah yes, the ubiquitous definite article" and Alexandria became al-āIskandariyya.
In the opposite direction, Spanish adopted hundreds of Arabic words during the Middle Ages due to Andalusian/Islamic influence, and there are very few Spanish words that start with al- that aren't of Arabic origin (and in fact, many words that start with A without being followed by an L, as in about half of cases in Arabic the L in "al-" is elided).
Reanalysis occurs in many other places besides article-noun combos, of course, but it's an extremely common case.

Oh, this actually explains something I'd just attributed to a quirk of sequence constraints or something; why Alexander is realized as Iskander/Iskandar in Arabic! It makes sense to analyze it as al-Iskander in Arabic!
Same thing happened with the word alchemy! Started out as the Arab term "al-kimiya", and when it was transported to Europe, it became "alchemy". This is actually really interesting, because as the term evolved more, it became "chemistry", effectively un-reanalyzing the word!
Oh actually there's another layer of fun there: the Arabic "al-kimiya" is actually a loan of the Ancient Greek Ļįæ Ī¼ĪµĪÆį¾± (khumeĆÄ), which was used to refer to the art of alloying metals. Arabic borrowed a lot of Greek terminology owing to Arabic translations of Greek classics (many of which were actually lost in Europe until they were retranslated from Arabic). So, yeah, the Greek khumeĆÄ made a round trip through Arabic, then into medieval Latin as "alchemia," and from there we eventually do get chemistry!
Not quite the same thing, but this reminded me of one of the funniest phenomena in the German language.
So, you may or may not know that x-rays were discovered by a guy called Rƶntgen (or Roentgen, though the ƶ is the proper spelling). Because of that, they're called "Rƶntgen rays" in German. Now, the thing is that in the German, the infinitive of a verb is always formed with an -en at the, so, for example, "to run" is "rennen" or "to sleep" is "schlafen." And because of that, it just so happened that the verb for performing x-rays became... "rƶntgen."

I really have fatigue on the hyperfocusing and pressure on language learners to performatively hold "being able to speak" as the ultimate goal of all learning activities. That's the only question people really care about, "well can you speak?"
I actually don't really care that much about speaking, especially at a small talk level. I prefer not to speak at all at that level because I'm an introvert. I do not enjoy forced and awkward "nice weather isn't it" with random strangers in languages I am fully capable and fluent, so naturally I would not enjoy this in languages where I'm still in progress and lacking confidence.
To be able to speak at the level where I am actually comfortable, for me, requires a massive language capacity already solidified in my mind. Basically, it takes a very long time before I feel confident going out of my way to communicate at the most chit chat levels.
On the other hand, I actually do enjoy reading, listening and watching stuff in the languages I'm learning, gradually understanding more and more is so rewarding on it's own. Being able to communicate with ease is a distant and vague goal I'm not weighing on myself every moment I'm consuming the language.
I don't remember if I've talked about this channel before, but I highly recommend immersion in Korean on youtube for Korean learners.

the best thing about being an intermediate language speaker is that studying can be whatever you want.
watching tv in your target language? studying.
playing your favorite video game in your target language? studying.
listening to music in your target language? studying.
you have finally broken out of the beginner stage, and you are equipped with enough grammar, vocab, etc. of the language to be able to derive meaning from almost anything (to a point).
you can immerse yourself however you like, and it can be a lot less boring than something like "susie likes to play piano". you can force yourself to understand anything with enough effort (and a dictionary)... or if you want something more lowkey you can just play stardew valley and call it an academic endeavor. that works, too.

there is no amount of language learning that is useless. I think it obviously scales up in wonderfulness as you learn more, but even just being at the point where you can recognize what language is being spoken or written is still a more useful thing than not knowing that. it is lovely to say hi to people in their language! any attempt to learn is important. you don't get fluent overnight. and you don't have to get fluent overnight. more knowledge is better than none. it isn't just all or nothing.
Like trump literally is using the concept of entitlement to the whole continent of America, to make not so vague imperialistic threats that other countries rightly have not perceived so well, but go off.
Also calling yourself America is bland and stupid.
