Imagine if babies were named the same way that files were, so by default it's "New Baby" until the parents change it, and if you meet a "New Baby (2)" out in the wild and it's like a five year old that's a major sign of serial parental neglect

Only parents can reallocate names, so that means somebody called "New Baby" might just be an orphan. But "New Baby (2)" means that they had at least nine months to name the first baby before the second was born, and they just didn't give a fuck. Sad

so when I had my baby it was a C section under general anaesthetic and the baby had to be taken to the children's hospital immediately so they had to like. Tag and categorise the baby before I could do the naming thing.

Two days later when I got discharged and could go to the children's Hospital all the tags and forms and records just said "Baby [Surname]"

Basically if you're not conscious when your baby is born and it has to leave immediately, it does in fact just get named 'Baby' for a bit

All the babies born at the hospitals I've worked at (in the same system so it's all the same naming convention) are MomLastname, Boy/Girl (number if multiple) MomMomFirstname. So if Jane Doe has twin girls they'd be Doe, Girl 1 MomJane and Doe, Girl 2 MomJane. This name sticks around until baby gets a name and sometimes for a while after so there's no confusion during that admission. Esp if the last name changes.

I have yet to see what happens if the birthing parent isn't a woman & the hospital knows that.

If someone releases orders early and maybe if baby is intersex, I've seen "unknown" instead of boy/girl before.

So currently I answer to my full first name (which I usually introduce myself with) as well as two nicknames/diminutives plus my last name when people mistake it for a first name. There are two or three other nicknames I've also gone by in the past. I'm perfectly fine with this, or neutral at minimum-- I have a common name and have had to be flexible with how I'm distinguished for my whole life. I also don't feel a deep and fundamental connection of my name with my identity, though I think going by another name entirely would confuse me.

A number of friends have been appalled at me being called names I don't say are my name. Which is really weird to me, although I'd go to battle for anyone else who was getting either deadnamed or called something they didn't want. But this perspective seems surprisingly common!

How do you feel about being called something other than the name you introduce yourself with?

I think it's fun if people give me (non-derogatory) nicknames or shorten my name

I don't care if people call me something else and will answer to it

Some computer related jobs will periodically send you emails posing as phishing scams and if you open it you automatically have to take a web safety training seminar and I just think they should do that for tumblr except with reading comprehension
