tch... so it's an alliance out of necessity, huh...?
See the thing about Stratt putting all media ever in the Hail Mary is that it isn’t just for lolz or to keep the crew entertained, it always struck me as something deeply sad. Because even if all the crew survived, there was no way they could consume all possible media ever, language barriers alone would present a problem. And even then, they had a job to do and focus on first (which could have theoretically taken decades of work to figure out) so they wouldn’t have much use for The Great Gatsby or a week’s worth of poorly written amateur Guatemalan experimental opera. Let us remember that Stratt is practical and true utilitarian Instead, I think it was another part of the Hail Mary. If the scientists failed, if the Earth died, then what? Everything would have been completely lost. Art, music, film, history. Destroyed. Without a single living soul to remember it by. It would be as if all of humanity had never existed.
But if it survived? If other alien civilizations discovered traces of humanity? Then the memory of mankind could live on and be remembered. What better way to do that than to send everything (literally everything, the art, the music, the science, the history) out as far as humanly possible so that it might connect with someone else in the universe? It would be a long shot, a Hail Mary, but it was the best chance that humanity had to be remembered
Hey hey, as a librarian, can I just say don’t pace yourself at the library. I get a lot of customers saying “oh I shouldn’t get too many books out at once” but like you should!!!! Max out your card, take everything we have on a subject you’re interested in, make a book fort in your home. We love that shit! It doesn’t matter if you read them or not; just take them for an adventure and bring them back whenever they’re due!
For public libraries, one of the ways we secure funding year to year is lending. Governments don’t want to fund more books if they’re not being used and the way we measure use is by issues. Regardless of whether you read it or not, whether you have it for a day or a month, if you issue it to your library card, we get the stats! It makes the library look good!
Help your local library; get books out even if you know you can’t read them all!

liking popular characters and ships but in a way that’s completely different from the majority of fandom is like being in the middle of the ocean and dying of thirst because the water around you is undrinkable
liking unpopular characters and ships but in a way that’s completely different from like the 5 other people who like them is like being in a desert and seeing a mirage in the distance but when you approach it the water disappears
Always funny to me when indie devs who already sell games for dirt cheap participate in steam sales with like 90 percent off. Like. "Yeah this game is three dollars but you can have it for one right now." Like your game costs as much as a pack of m&ms and youre selling it for the cost of a pack of m&ms in the 1950s now? Okay
I miss when ads were a single click and then they’re gone. Now every ad has a minimum of three phases where you watch a video, exit the still frame of fake gameplay, and then exit the app download. That doesn’t even touch on the ones that forcibly take you to another app after opening a tab in safari without you ever touching the screen.
I hate advertising. I hate that you can’t do anything without companies jumping down your throat with mostly bullshit ads. I hate that billboards exist. I hate that every company unanimously decided to make their ads longer and longer. I hate that ad blockers try to charge you money and there are in app purchases to remove ads. I hate that my attention has become commodified. I hate that there’s nothing I can do about it.
Not to sound like a decrepit, rambling corpse about it, but back in my day Word used to be a pre installed program that came with your computer, if you were running Windows.
No subscription. Just program.
On your computer. You got to use it forever and ever and never had to worry about it going away.
Because it was physically on your computer. As a program. That you actually owned. Not because you got it separately, but because it was a standard inclusion with your computer.
I'm sorry but I'll just never get over it. I remember when companies cared about their products being usable out of the box. I remember when our things belonged to us.
Old man shaking fist at cloud, wherein the cloud is the background of the Windows 98 logo.
once I snorted a fat line of nuance and everything started depending. watch out

[id: two paper bags from Aldi placed upside down on the floor. Suddenly paws shoot out from under one, then the other. The sets of paws run into each other and swat, then retreat, then repeat. Eventually the cat on the left gets turned around and can’t feel the other cat, so abandons their bag to attack directly (cheating according to the video taker)]/end id.
Here's to hellsite solidarity!
Looks like tonight's research spiral will be on the KKK because I did NOT know it was a tax exempt religious organization and now I must fact check as well as find out when and why etc
Step one on the research spiral (cuz I delayed it due to memory) is already taking me out:
They knew what I was looking for right off the bat xD
According to the Abstract for an article titled "Addressing Hate: Georgia, the IRS, and the Ku Klux Klan," written by Samuel D. Brunson, Loyola University Chicago School of Law (because I cannot tell if I can actually read the article), the KKK officially suspended its operations in 1944. And then ended in its entirety two years later. "In 1944 the Bureau of Internal Revenue assessed a $685,305 tax on the Klan and, when the Klan did not pay, filed a lien." This was because the Klan had made itself a Georgia Fraternal Organization in 1916, "...following a model of the Masons and other fraternal organizations." Evidently, they also claimed to be a "...tax-exempt fraternal beneficiary society under the new federal income tax." So they basically had legal rights, benefits, and respect within the community in part due to this legal status. But because they couldn't pay up, they violated their corporate charter and tax-exempt fraternal beneficiary terms. This left the state of Georgia no choice but to revoke the Corporate Charter. Now, obviously, this wouldn't be enough to cause the Klan to cease to exist, but it certainly didn't help. (Source: Samuel D. Brunson, Addressing Hate: Georgia, the IRS, and the Ku Klux Klan, 41 VA. TAX REV. 45 (2021).
Now, further digging has made it evident that other White Supremacist groups and similar reprehensible organizations of the modern United States enjoy tax benefits, public subsidies, the legal status of being a charity, and so on. That's not something that makes me jump with joy. And it shouldn't be allowed. But, you know, here we are.
I do think it is important to note that while the KKK of the twentieth century is no longer around, the KKK of today is a fragmented group. Which means there are many different groups under the "umbrella," if you will. And no doubt, some of those groups and local chapters are among the tax-exempt hate groups. If that is the case, you can technically say it is still a tax-exempt organization. And if any of them are anything like the original KKK, which was protestant-led, then they are also, by definition, a religious organization to boot. So I would say this is half true, and I hate that it even has any truth in it.
