The influence of Southern popular culture and many diverse life experiences are embedded in William Hemmerling's eclectic paintings.

Bill was born in Chicago and emigrated to Ponchatoula, a small Louisiana town near New Orleans, about thirty years ago, where he was a visual artist for Sears who put together displays of the interior store. He is an inexperienced artist, having not received any formal training, but his work reflects sophistication in material and materials used. Bill is constantly searching for and using "found" materials and objects that often suggest the subject and theme of the painting.

There is an element of fantasy in much of his work and he often paints in the early hours of the morning inspired by the ephemeral memory of a night's dream. It also explores series of unique topics such as Cotton, The Preacher and The Washwoman, jazz musicians, celebrities, architecture and a range of spiritual topics. But, he is best known for his image of a sweet, African-American woman named "sweet olive."

Her love for people, her enthusiasm and interest in the creative process, her humble and somewhat "off-the-beat" nature, brings excitement and energy to her work.

"The Lights of Gethsemane" was born from a heartfelt desire to draw closer to those who yearn for comfort and support (2 Cor 1:3–4). It emerged from the depths of the author’s personal experience with the devotion of the Holy Hour, which she has been practising for several years. For this reason, the entire narrative woven throughout these pages — in a triple, intertwining form of images, brief narrative stories, and lyrical fragments conceived as “songs” — is, above all, a personal prayer of a stirred spirit. At the same time, it is the fruit of these hours — a lesson in the duty of service to those who feel lonely, whether directly, due to the absence of close companions, or metaphysically, as a result of a profound sense of emptiness and a crisis of meaning, grappling with genuine spiritual suffering.

The author humbly hopes that this little work, prepared with attention to detail, will also become your prayer book. May it serve as an aid in persevering in contemplation, in trusting and quiet presence with Christ in Gethsemane, and in sharing with others the comfort with which He sustains us.

The natural and direct inspiration for creating "The Lights of Gethsemane" was the text of the biblical "Song of Songs", the work "The Spiritual Canticle" by St. John of the Cross, as well as the beloved world of fairy tales cherished by the author.
