Whumptober 2023 - Prompt No. 2
"I'll call out your name, but you won't call back."Â | Thermometer | Delirium |Â "They don't care about you."
Just when things were starting to go good again, they went downhill. Because if anything was consistent in his life, it was the bad luck. So even though he had just become captain of the newly refurbished Enterprise and they were about to start their 5 year mission, the first ever in Star Fleet history, he had to go and mess things up.
It started out as just a regular routine mission. They were supposed to go to this planet along the outskirts of the Alpha quadrant so they could see if it might be a good fit for the vulcan refugees.
âThis is Captain Kirk. We are 5 hours out from Non Tellio in the Rho Minor system. Once we arrive I would like 2 security officers as well as a few scientists specialized in environmental studies to accompany me and First Officer Spock in Transporter 1. Kirk out.â
âKeptin. We are rapidly approaching the atmosphere of the planet. Should we enter orbit?â
âAye Chekov. Make it so.â As he said this, Kirk rose in his seat and headed to the turbolift. âSpock, youâre with me.â
âYes Captain.â The two headed to the turbolift where is took them down to the transporter wing. The 2 security officers as well as the scientists were already there when they arrived and Scotty was manning the transporter room.
â7 to beam down to the surface Scotty.â
âAye Captain. Stand by to transport.â The seven of them got onto the transporter pad, and then felt the tingling sensation Kirk had always associated with being transported. He supposed he should stop teasing Bones about the dislike of transporters, after all, it did leave him feeling off balanced when he arrived.
In the ten seconds it took for him to run this train of thought, they had arrived on the planet. However, it seemed like the planet was covered in crystalline structures, which was weird because this planet was supposed to be similar to vulcan. Which meant sand, not crystals.
âCaptain it appears the planet is not what we were expecting.â
âCaptain my name is Spock not Sherlock.â
âItâs an expression Spock.â
âAh.â There was a pause. âI still do not get it.â Kirk shook his head.
âNevermind then.â He turned to address the landing party. âI know this isnât what we were expecting and I doubt it will work as a planet for the vulcan refugees but nonetheless we should still observe the planet.â
There was a chorus of âAye Captainsâ as the landing team fanned out, leaving just Spock and Kirk.
âWell Spock? Where do you want to explore?â
âI donât think we should do any exploring until the rest of the party has come back.â
âOh come on it will be fun!â
âCaptain with you various allergies I donât think itâs wise to-â Spock was cut off as Kirk starting walking in the opposite direction. Spock sighed and started following, after all, someone responsible had to follow him.
By the time Spock had gotten over to Kirk, he had already started poking at the different alien plant life. Spock had to resist the urge to roll his eyes.
âHey Spock come look at this! It looks like itâs smiling at me!â When Spock heard this he panicked, he had remembered an alien plant in the Vulcan archives that looked bright and colorful but would trap you in your mind if you got to close. It was a brilliant defense mechanism, but unfortunately not so great when you have a Captain such as Kirk.
Just as Spock was about to warn him, Kirk touched the plant. The effect was immediate. His eyes glazed over and he collapsed.
âSpock to Enterprise. Two to beam up to med bay.â
McCoy was having a perfectly fine day. Until Kirk decided to do something stupid and ruin his alone time. That kid was going to be the death of him one day.
âAlright hobgoblin. What happened.â
âWe landed on the planet and even though it wasnât anything like Vulcan, the Captain thought it would be wise to explore anyways.â
âAnd Iâm assuming that means he decided to go start touching random things?â
âYes. Just as he was about to touch the plant I recognized it from our archives on Vulcan. I believe it has trapped Kirk in his mind. Although he may also be allergic to it.â
âKid canât do anything by half measures can he?â
âNevermind. Why donât you go look through the computer and see if you canât find that plant while I stay here and try and keep him from dying.â
âYes Doctor McCoy. I shall return once I have found the information.âÂ
He was cold. It wasnât the cold when his mom forgot to pay for the power in fall. It was a deep, piercing cold. It seemed to go down to his bones, down to his very soul. All he could feel was cold. There was nothing else.
âDoctor I believe I found something that may be of use.â
âWell thank god because keeping Kirk alive is harder than a biscuit during winter.â
âAre biscuits not normally hard?â
âWhat no- nevermind. What do you have.â
âIt seems the plant definitely has a mental aspect to it and it if the Captain can work through it on his own, he should come back to us. If he isnât back within 24 hours, it means he is stuck and needs help getting out. Normally a Vulcan Healer would be used, but as I am the only Vulcan on the ship, it would have to be me.â
âKid canât ever make it easy for me can he.â
âUnfortunately not Doctor.â
âYes well itâs already almost 20 hours in and he hasnât shown any signs of change. You are probably gonna have to do my job for me and get Kirk out of this damned situation.â
âI shall go meditate so I am ready, comm me at the 24 hour mark.â
24 hours later and there was still no change in Kirkâs condition. So Spock had McCoy transport Kirk over to his dorms so he could set up the traditional meditation chamber. He didnât want anything to go wrong especially when dealing with matters of the mind.
He steeled himself to enter Kirkâs mind. Checked, and double checked, and triple checked his shields were in place. But nothing prepared him for what he saw when he entered.
He felt the sting of pain all over his body. Each knife seemed to say something different.
âThey donât care about you.â A stab to the heart.
âWhy would Spock ever want to be friends with you.â A stab from behind.
âYou are a monster.â A stab in the palm of his hand.
âWhy are you such an idiot.â A stab to the head.
âYou never should have survived Tarsus.â A stab in his stomach.
âYou are less than zero.â He is bleeding out. He was covered in blood. He collapsed.
Spock rushed over to Kirk horrified. His Captain, his friend, was bleeding out in front of him.
âCaptain!â There was a certain air of desperation to Spockâs voice that he hadnât experienced since Nero. There was no response. There was a stench of blood and the chilling silence that always seemed to avoid his friend. Except for now. Now his friend was silent and hardly moving.
He rushed to Kirkâs side and collapsed on his knees next to him. He had to do something, anything. So he placed his hands on Kirkâs. And he did the only thing he could do. He took Kirkâs pain from him and replaced it with the words âWake Upâ.Â
Maybe he would die, or stay trapped in his Captainâs mind. But it would be worth it. He had to atone for what he did to his friend somehow. And maybe this would finally be his recompense.
When Kirk awoke he wasnât in the med bay for once. He blinked his eyes open and looked around the room. He saw Spock in the corner which meant he had to be in his first officerâs quarters.
He slowly got up from the bed and walked over to Spock who seemed to still be in meditation.
âSpock?â No response. He shook Spockâs shoulders. No response. He felt something wet in his hands and looked down. Blood. But there was no pain. Which meantâŚ
âComputer to MedBay.â
âBones! Iâm awake but Spock is currently unresponsive and bleeding out, I need you to come down here.â
âDamn Hobgoblin. You got it Captain.â 5 minutes later and Bones was down there with his full emergency kit for when someone was so critical they couldnât be moved to MedBay.
He watched as Bones scanned Spock with his tricorder and found several stab wounds. He patched them up as quickly as he could with the dermal regenerator. When that was finished he hooked Spock up to a bag of fluids and blood that he had stored from Spock just in case anything like this ever happened.
â...will he be okay?â Bones turned to Kirk and nodded. He breathed a sigh of relief. Hopefully when Spock woke up he would be able to fill him in on what all had happened. But for now he would wait by his First Officerâs side until he woke up. It was the least he could do.
