The scariest part of the 52 years of stalking isnβt even the stalking. Itβs that Armand knows every bad thing Daniel has ever done and he doesnβt care.
Daniel knows heβs an asshole. Heβs potentially the most self-aware character. He knows he hurt his ex-wives and his daughters. He understands that they hate him and he frequently validates their decision to do so. He gets it. Heβs not hiding from his mistakes. He knows what heβs done. People leave him because anyone sane would. Thereβs no malice there. He knows who he is.
But here is this beautiful, ancient creature who has lived through some of the most incredible periods of human innovation in modern history, who lived in Renaissance Venice and witnessed Paris return to its former glory after World War 2 , who has been exposed to some of the most important works of art in history, who has had so much time to absorb humanity and all its most impressive creations, and this creature tells him heβs in love with him, some random kid he met half a century ago by chance.
And not just that heβs in love with him. That he was actively in love with him while he was doing all the terrible things. None of it ever mattered. Armand has seen every shade of Danielβs soul, more than anyone else ever has, and he is in love with him because of it. It is one thing to have your mistakes exposed, itβs another entirely for someone to see them and decide to stay.
Armand has so freely given to Daniel what he has been trying to find for himself for half a millennia. The only thing he has ever wanted: to be truly known and accepted for everything you are, including the unseemly, ugly parts. How utterly and completely terrifying.
best character of all time

actually you know what that's exactly it i would rather someone add 5 parantheticals after every sentence than use tone indicators it's 1. accomplishing SO much more in terms of clarity 2. extremely funny to look at depending on how they're used
observe:
"is this real? /gen" β i thought /gen meant "general" for ages. i would not be able to understand this on first sight a few years ago and is thus ineffective
"is this real? (genuine question)" β i fully understand this without issue
"is this real? (genuine question) (can't tell) (very realistic) (looks real) (scary) (photoshop?)" β is not only incredibly clear it's also very funny to read all of these thoughts stapled together while also in their own parentheses. it's also the most useful because now i can actually address all parts of what they are asking me with as much specificity as BOTH of us need
parentheses my beloved (they are for bonus thoughts) (and questions) ( and sidetracks) (like a 2nd conversation on top of the first)
you know those studies showing that cursing helps with pain tolerance or whatever. thatβs how i feel about making my weird little noises to get through my basic daily activities. sometimes you just have to go hggblaaaah for a minute so you can find the strength within yourself to get up or wash the dishes or send an email. mmmnneh. urgh. the torments are unending but you can always make some little sounds about it.

"She doesn't have that. No Madeleine. No rest."
My parents have one of those ring cameras. This means, even when they are in New Mexico, dad gets a notification on his phone when someone wanders in front of it. Unlike many people, they have it set up in their yard as a wildlife watching camera, to watch the squirrels and birds and foxes and deer who wander up to the feeding stations and salt block.
This means, when I was up there today after looking after their cats, I got a baffled call from my father.
"honey". He said. "Why are you picking up sticks in the yard. Like go ahead but why."
Mom, in the background, as if this should explain everything; I told you sweetie it's the birch trees.
Dad; ......okay???
Mom; she probably wants them for dye.
Me; birch bark and twigs, dad. For dye.
Dad, sounding no less confused; my god you really just are your mother but younger
Mom, in the background; TEXT ME PHOTOS OF THE RESULTS HONEY

I love my parents dearly and they are very good about a lot of things, but they are still 67 year old white middle class people with some of the hang ups that entails.
A example; someone just bought a run down house halfway between theirs and ours, so like half a block away. The guy working in it was deemed 'weird' by my parents.
I met him today while walking Tyr. Had a nice conversation. He works a variety of odd jobs and was very happy he saved up enough cash finally to outright buy a little piece of property. He's fixing it up. He has schizophrenia and is thrilled to move out to the country because it's easier for him than being in the city around lots of people who find him off putting. He's actually a super chill guy. He gave me some pepper spray because he saw me jog past the last few days and says everyone who jogs alone should have some.
Anyway tldr; got a new neighbor who seems nice!
