Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”
Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.
#'this is present in the text' is often a good first step #but those second and third ones (naming it; describing its function) are vital (via @elucubrare)
As Theodore Sturgeon said, ask the next question.
Imagine Shen Qingqiu gets a face full of pollen that lowers his inhibitions and now he can’t stop the severe cuteness aggression he gets when he sees his husband
Softly biting Luo Binghe’s cheeks, kissing his forehead, snuggling his face into a tight hug while nuzzling the top of his head
Luo Binghe had never felt more alive. Although, this quickly nosedives as soon as he pinches Liu Qingge’s cheeks, exclaiming how funny his shidi is at times
scrapped painting,, thought i might as well post it

Something I learned is if you don't step out of your artistic comfort zone a little, you're gonna be even more exhausted with making art. Your mind is a caged tiger and it needs to attack something new from time to time. Your mind is pacing in its enclosure 🐅
If you don't like drawing figures and poses because they're frustrating, draw figures and poses and get frustrated! Draw them! With anger! Swear and curse at them!
If you don't like drawing traditionally because there's too much room to make mistakes, draw traditionally and make mistakes! Scream while doing it! Put on scary music! Make it silly!
This goes for any kind of craft or skill
You stand to lose nothing in the end (Except maybe your own patience and sanity but that's temporary). But you do gain at least a little bit more knowledge and skill to feed your mind tiger
Thinking more about abyssal emperor SY and empress Binghe (Link)
SY talks about training Binghe with fighting and combat but Binghe just gives sad eyes and SY is like 'Binghe will have to do so much fighting later he should have times to rest, especially after all those years on that peak Binghe should be taken care of and chance to rest'
Binghe wanting to learn music and art instead and SY teaching because poor Binghe never got learn this before he'll teach him everything Binghe is talented enough to put all of those qing jing peak disciples to shame.
SY teaching Binghe all about abyssal creatures and other demons that Binghe will have to fight. Binghe is learning all about the subjects he'll rule over with SY and the creatures within their domain.
Binghe wanting to wear fancy robes and SY agreeing because of course Binghe should get the best and if that's when he wants then of course he should have it. It's different styles to the art less armor but Binghe wants it so who cares.
Binghe is pampered empress just relaxing and cooking and enjoying listening to SY talking about monsters and history.
SY is still like Binghe will soon be leaving to take his revenge until then he can rest the protagonist deserves a break he'll be gone soon so I'll make the most of my time to spoil little white lotus.
THE GOLDEN GIRLS 2.05 — Isn't It Romantic? — 08.11.86 Betty White as Rose Nylund Lois Nettleton as Jean
1986!!
Golden Girls was so incredibly progressive for its time and not even slightly afraid to be loud about it. They talked about queer people, about race, about ableism, and they made it central and overt. They talked about things that mattered, and they never punched down, and they were allies off the stage too.
Reblogging this again to add some context for anyone who may not know. In the 80's, being outed as gay could get you blacklisted in Hollywood. It ruined people's careers.
Bea Arthur and Betty White both suffered damage to their careers for standing up against racism and homophobia. Back in the 50s Betty White hosted a variety show that was canceled because she featured a black dancer and doubled down when they told her to stop.

"I don't have prince charming I don't have someone to love and I feel cold in my soul but I don't care I will make one my imagination is big enough to create them , when I am holding my hand and I feel cold in my hand I say my snow man husband is holding me tight until it gets hot between my hands again so I pretend my prince had left me to do his duties as a king and he will be back again at night when my other hand feel cold to be with my prince charming again and again I can only write my dreams but never dare to includ me in it, I am sorry my prince your going to be a lonely king my lonely king and give the power with a price please don't be mad at me as I write you to lose against the future emperor please stay in my imagination to be mine, the story I am writing you will have taste betrayal and I will be the first to be blamed such a cruel writer i am, making my king my beloved person feel tired how dare I say as if I was not the one that created this storm, my king my prince charming as I am writing something that isn't about you my hands are writing words I don't to even look at, my prince charming my king let me imagine your cold body holding me tight as my body aches for your comfort and as I no longer feel my body and as my soul disappear"
Having read through the local pride program, I think there is too many stories centring the boring mundane hardships of being queer, and not enough stories centring the hardships of being reborn into the super straight trashy web novel you have been hate reading, or having to attend super boring summer school while there are cute persons around, or being caught up between family, love and moral obligations during the war for supremacy among warrior aristocracy clans.
btw it's so fucking stupid you can be anxious physically in your body even after you've decided mentally you don't care. I'm supposed to be in charge here
he's so weak and helpless :(

being online is so scary aren't you guys worried about the world wide spider
It took 36 years for someone to make this joke and by god it was worth the wait
I love this so much! Also it triggered a memory and I spent far longer than I want to admit trying to find this 2002(ish) pic from Aussie cartoonist Judy Horacek
i love this!
i did a bit of digging and found that some bloke named Simon Brooke used the OP's joke as his email signature at least as early as March 14th, 1995 according to this quoted text. it takes a while to find a preserved copy of something Simon said but here's an example from mid-96:
My bad
Some dragon Bingqiu sillies I illustrated for the Parallel Worlds zine! They are in loovveee 💚❤️
