So, it's time to go fishing. We're going to make a 10-kilometer-long chain, put a sampling device of some kind on the end (Rocky will make that), and drag it through the atmosphere. Easy enough, right? PROJECT HAIL MARY (2026) directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller, adapted from the novel 'Project Hail Mary' by Andy Weir

I try not to fall into the "I never liked their work anyway" ditch when an artist/creator reveals themself to be a terrible person
BUT
a feeling I do have and will stand by is "While I enjoyed their work overall I did have some gripes that I overlooked out of affection and whimsy, but now that my loyalty is gone and my affection tainted there is nothing holding me back from enumerating my many grievances, to which the revelations of the creator's shittiness may or may not provide a new and infuriating context."
#such a good summation of this actually#because yeah there’s usually things that were always present#but which were easy to overlook or give the benefit of the doubt#that suddenly become relevant after a revelation about the creator#and it’s really not the same thing as the self-defensive “’I never liked it anyway’

I think my brain/body may have decided that I have no choice but to quit my stupid job, or at least take medical leave.
I love the People's Republic of California.
It turns out you can file for worker's comp in California if you have anxiety as a result of chronic over-work and a toxic environment.
Gee I wonder if there's somewhere that I've consistently documented the unreasonable expectations and constant overload that I've experienced at work.
I've spent the last week having panic attacks every time i open my computer and after a week of that I was going to try to force myself go to work today and instead I completely fucking lost it.
New manager called my cell and i picked up because i didn't recognize the number, i ended up saying that i was likely going to file for medical leave after speaking to my doctor today.
Then I thought about it for a sec and emailed my direct supervisor, the new manager, the VP who assigns me work, and the CEO (who also directly assigns me work) and BCC'd my personal email to confirm that I'd had a brief call with the manager 20 minutes earlier, that on the call I said I was out of the office due to a medical issue, that I was seeing my doctor later in the day, and that I would likely be putting in for medical leave after that appointment and would be reaching out with more info after speaking to a medical professional.
I also put it in writing that I was going to be doing some work on billing after the appointment because it's a process that only I know how to do and it has to be completed by the 5th of the month, and that I'd be recording the process (something that also came up on the call from the manager).
Translated from work speak that means:
I am documenting that I spoke to a supervisor about medical leave, this email exists because the supervisor called me from his personal number and otherwise the communication would not be documented. This conversation is now documented and time-stamped.
In spite of the fact that I will be filing for medical leave, I am going to be doing work for you today. This indicates that in spite of multiple people knowing that I'm sick, I was contacted by a supervisor and must do work because if a single person is out sick, we can't complete our monthly billing.
Cover your asses out there, kids.

The Byzantine Empire, that is.
Oh FUCK
My eyes have just fallen out of my head because of this gorgeous fabric.
Because one can never get enough visuals of medieval clothing …
hey @markscherz what kind of beast is this and why does it have bell bottoms
This is Cruziohyla craspedopus, and basically it has evolved to look like a leaf and not like a frog when sitting still during the day (they are nocturnal). Apparently bellbottoms break up your outline and make it harder for predators to recognise you as a tasty morsel.

horrible news: you have to practice to level up your skills because it's unrealistic to think you'll be good at everything first try
this applies to unlearning things like shame and creating better coping mechanisms and forming new habits
For all that the 1800s etiquette guides are--obviously--derangedly sexist from a modern perspective? They're also mindblowing in how casually they will assert things that MODERN DAY CONSERVATIVES would scream and cry and shit their pants about.
"People back then always married young it's natural!!!" Every single 1800s guide I've ever met casually mentions that, of course, you really shouldn't get married before you're at least 20, and waiting until 25 is usually better.
Or, like. Okay here's a long segment:
Just firmly going "it is crazy sexist to blame The Wife for overspending when thirty seconds of asking questions will immediately establish that her husband was outright lying to her about how much money they had. Talk to your wife like a normal person."
Or--okay, here. A section on being honest and not writing love letters in secret, because that's usually a good sign that there's something untoward going on....
....except that he then immediately acknowledges that sometimes, the reason you're hiding this from your parents is that your parents suck. That there are parents who frankly have not earned the right to approve or disapprove of your partner.
(I realize the phrasing there sounds a lot less strong than my summary, but--trust me on this. When you're familiar with the narrative voice of these kinds of books, this passage is downright radical. The mere acknowledgement that if you treat your kids badly, it's your own damn fault when they don't talk to you? I've genuinely never seen that before in this genre. Don't freak out over "properly trained", either. It's just a linguistic shift--at the time, "training" was used the way we would say "raising" a child today. )
Leonard McCoy skittering around in my mind
A character trait/dynamic that I'm endlessly compelled by is someone dealing with (or, like, failing to) being the child of people who were too busy being good people to have the time and attention to be good parents. This can be anywhere from 'was a public defender who gave a shit working 60 hour weeks with basically no vacations' to 'left their family behind to join the revolution/war effort and is now a universally beloved martyr-hero who saved/remade the world with their final breath' on the groundedness spectrum. The important thing is a viscerally felt but confused and ugly mess of longing, resentment, and guilt about feeling the resentment.
