The polar opposite of corporate accounts trying to come across as hip and super friendly are the ones for libraries, aquariums, parks systems and the like, that are basically just trying to get people excited about learning and the wonder of history/science by posting things like this:
wow, what a gorgeous month to remember autism isnât a disease and thereâs no âcure for autismâ and there shouldnât have to be one just because allistic people canât get the hell over themselves and realise other people experience the world differently and have different needs and require different accommodations. terrific.
autism is literally a neurological and development condition but ok sure yeah keep with the feel good platitudes, you absolute tit
Thereâs a strong difference between a âdiseaseâ and a âconditionâ, you absolute tit
Think of it this way. 83% of computers (laptop and desktop) use Windows. 13% use Mac. The vast majority of software is developed for windows, with another significant fraction developed for or adapted to mac, because thatâs what most people use and itâs all most people understand.
Now imaging youâre one of the 1.4% of computers are running Linux. This doesnât mean youâve got a windows machine with a virus, it doesnât mean your computer is broken, it doesnât mean it needs to get replaced with a more common operating system. Itâs not quite as good at some things most people take for granted, but itâs significantly better at a bunch of other things. But if you have a problem with your computer, the vast majority of people wonât have any idea what youâre talking about. Theyâll give advice for how to deal with a similar issue on their own computer, and it will be worthless. The only people with any idea what youâre going through are going to be on linux forums. And you can mostly muddle through all the things everybody else can do with improvisation and lots of WINE, but it sure would be nice if the devs of that video game you were looking forward to would like, acknowledge the existence of your demographic.
Now imagine that on top of all that, the primary linux support system had been taken over by a bunch of assholes whoâve never so much as looked at a command prompt in their lives. but who have declared themselves the Voice of Linux Users and keep spending millions of dollars on campaigns âeducatingâ everybody about how using linux makes you a fundamentally bad and stupid person so your laptop needs to be burned immediately to force you to get a correct computer.
i love that analogy so fucking much
As an IT person who uses linux and as a mother of one, possibly two autistic kids:
This is an excellent analogy.

me, the full volume: EXACTLY *a bit quieter* I left some dishes out on the counter if you wanna make em float or something babe
the ghost: okay thank you baby youâre so sweet

We should all plant flowers đ

Girls donât want boys girls want an adaptation of Pride and Prejudice starring Lupita Nyongâo as Elizabeth Bennet and Gwendoline Christie as Mr Darcy
homophobes are not allowed to use computers because the inventor of the computer was gay
People think this is just a joke but Alan Turing was the inventor of the computer and his sexuality was illegal in his time (which was not even 100 years ago) and he was arrested. They put him on drugs that destroyed his genius brain and committed suicide a year after being covicted. He was gay and a war hero as well. He helped to break enigma which was a German code that they put all their messages through. He shorted WWII by two years and saved so many lives in the process.
Friendly reminder that if not for Alan Turing you wouldnât be reading this post and we might be ruled by the nazis

i hate when people in movies/tv are reading ancient languages and they translate everything really smoothly and poetically, as if when people who study ancient languages arenât consulting three different commentaries and sobbing profusely when we read
ok so likeâŚ. it says
âcome you all into the deepest cavern, or maybe thatâs fireplace, depends on usage, and having come may you give yourâŚ. treasures? Skin? Pants? I donât know, somethingâŚ. to theâŚ.. about-to-be-adored guy, that one whoâŚ. okay, he either causes earthquakes or sleeps a lot, I think this might be an idiomâŚ.â
âok, sorry that took so long and i hate to disappoint but iâm still not entirely sure what it means, like, it could be something about a religious ceremony or it could be a dick joke. leaning towards dick joke, might be both. knowing the ancients, probably both. this could very well be an ancient dick temple and we should probably leave.â
Funnest part is when you get shit like this:
Why yes that is a text comprised of almost exclusively crocodile hieroglyphs.
We also canât get a coherent translation because the grammar makes absolutely no sense. Participles and Participial statements all the way. Sobek who is Crocodile of Crocodopolis who advances the Crocodile for the CrocodilesâŚ.
The crocodile hieroglyph is also used to write sovereign and an adjective meaning powerâŚso the text is suuuuuuuper confusing.
I canât help but wonder if the crocodile hieroglyph text (which I never knew about, that is AMAZING) is the ancient equivalent of a sestina or another complex poem form. With the crocodile symbol meaning so many different things, and the result being so difficult to translate, it might make more sense as a poem or some other stylistically rigid text.
Either that, or it was the Egyptian equivalent of a student being made to write lines on the chalkboard.
I will not take the name of Lord Sobek in vain
I will not take the name of Lord Sobek in vain
I will not take the name of Lord Sobek in vain
I will notâŚâShakes out chiseling handâ Take the name of Lord Sobek in vainâŚ.
Looks like an ancient shitpost to me.

this is making me think of that story that was written in order to explain why simplifying Chinese characters to one character per syllable is a really bad idea

Ahh Set! Ahh Set!
Set! Itâs Set! Ooooo, itâs a Set!
Did you just
@smarmykemeticpagan, can you pass this around your end of the community?
ONCE AGAIN: We are not having a full discussion about gun violence if we fail to acknowledge that police brutality targets black people. When the police become a part of school campuses, the arrests of Black students only increases, as do physical assaults.
If you need a refresher, please recall how âSchool Resource Officerâ Ben Fields body slammed a teenage black girl for the âcrimeâ of being on her cell phone.
Arming school teachers is an incredibly bad idea. And placing Black students in proximity to police officers needlessly puts innocent Black children at risk. We need a better, more nuanced solution. âMore policeâ fails as a solution for nearly the same reasons that âmore gunsâ does.
Police officers on school grounds is an integral part of the school-to-prison pipeline.

accurate
Aaand I know what my next embroidery project will be
Best friends.
Things you may not know about the legendary South African actor John Kani, who playâs Tâchallaâs Father/King Tâchaka in Black Panther.
He lost his left eye to a beating he received from Apartheid Police and wears a glass prosthetic eye.
in the mid 1980â˛s, he performed in a play called âMiss Julie in Cape Townâ Half of the audience walked out of the production when he kissed a white woman on stage â an act that resulted in death threats and an assassination attempt, in which he was stabbed 11 times.
in 1985, he lost his brother who was killed whilst reading a poem at a funeral when Apartheid police started shooting up at the mourners.
all of this happened in a minority ruled white supremacist country formed ON land where his people where the natives and the majority, apartheid âendedâ in 1994.

History for yo ass
I kinda thought he had a prosthetic eye when I was looking at him in BP but didnât want to assume
I think Iâve said it before, but I want an all plus-size season of Project Runway.
No forewarning in the casting call, just a dozen of the best aspiring designers chosen and when they meet the models, they happen to be size 12 and above.
Of course theyâll cry at first, but Tim Gunn will tell them to get over it and maybe weâll have some amazing original designs for people the industry usually ignores.
With Christian Siriano as the first guest judge giving everyone single designer who complains the what for
Please let this happen, I only have two dollars, but they are yours if I can have this
ashley nell tipton as the second guest judge who utterly destroys them
if they do this, then they must increase the budget for each designer because larger sized models means more fabric needed means the designers need larger budgets. thatâs why the show will never go for it.
@electracopes
Yeah⌠no.
1. This is a sponsored television program where designers routinely buy/waste more fabric than theyâll ever need on challenges and itâs all on the showâs dime. And itâs all for the art and show of it. Theyâll never even be worn again. Cost is a ridiculous reason to reject creating plus size season⌠money is irrelevant here.
2. Also, not every type and print is fabric costs the same. Some are cheaper than others. If designers can deal with restrictive budgets on the regular PR challenges in order to create something unique and beautiful thereâs absolutely no reason why they couldnât take the same budget and make adjustments to do the same thing for plus size women.
3. At the industry level, the idea that plus size clothes cost SO MUCH MORE than straight sizes has been debunked time and again. It simply doesnât⌠especially at the quantities at which they are purchasing fabric for mass production.
4. Costs can also be brought down by cutting patterns out of fabrics in a conscientious way to reduce waste (which designers on PR already do when working with expensive fabrics or limited budgets).
5. The costs of menâs clothes do not vary as drastically as womenâs do regardless of their size. If the fabric cost excuse were genuine, you would expect the same exorbitant price hike reflected there. Big and tall clothes for men are generally within a reasonable range of the lower sizes.
6. Plus size womenâs clothes cost more and designers refuse to create plus size clothes not because of cost or any other reasonable difficulties, but because itâs a punitive measure against fat women and because they thus far been able to get away with it.
My little sister (sheâs 13) and I had a discussion recently about the cost of plus size clothes.
We both noted that we get a really good fit wearing maternity clothes. Sometimes a better fit than âplus sizeâ clothes.
So itâs quite interesting that buying a plus size shirt costs us significantly more than a maternity shirt. Presumably they have the same amount of fabric, or they wouldnât fit us.
Youâre exactly right.
And the style of maternity clothes is so much better as well, because itâs not socially acceptable to make punitive fashion for pregnant women.
If Iâm at Target I can tell when Iâve accidentally wandered from the Plus section and into the Maternity section because the clothes start looking suspiciously cute all of a sudden.
âPlus size clothes just cost more because of fabricâ is such bullshit when a string bikini costs more than a one piece because they sell the pieces separately. Itâs all fake, it just that companies know they can get away with it.
I want a story about a king whose son is prophesied to kill him so the king is like âwhatever what am I supposed to do, kill my own kid wtf is wrong with youâ so he just raises him as normal, doesnât even tell him about the prophecy, and instead of some convoluted twist of events that leads to the kingâs murder the son grows up and when the king is very old and dying and in excruciating pain the kid is just like alright I'mma put him out of his misery.
The kingâs son becomes the new king, and is prophesied to defeat evil and bring an age of prosperity. His generals and knights all crack their knuckles but he pretty much ignores them and focuses on strengthening the infrastructure of his kingdom. Forty years later he is old and sick but still hearing his subjectsâ grievances, and a generalâs like âhow will you defeat the prophesied evil now? Youâre old and weak.â Another visitor, a teenager fresh out of the kingdomâs public education system, looks at the general like he is an ignoramus. The king eradicated poverty, housed the homeless, taught the ignorant, ended class exploitation by abolishing the nobility and imprisoning the corrupt, and established a highly respected guild of doctors that recently figured out how to cure the plague. There are no brigands because there is enough wealth for everyone to live comfortably; hiding in the woods and taking trinkets from people simply doesnât make any sense for anyone but the desperate, and the people are not desperate. Evil is a weed, explains the teenager. It grows in cracked roads and crumbling houses and forgotten corners, rooted in indifference and watered by suffering. But the king demands that broken things be mended and suffering people be made well.
No evil lives in this kingdom, says the teenager. It starved to death before I was born.
Every once in a while, when Iâm feeling down, I go and look at the notes on this post and they make me feel a lot better. This is the energy I want to carry into 2018.

When somebody says that âa man likes to feel like a man,â all I hear is âA man likes to feel superior to you and itâs your job to make him believe it.âÂ
Someone said this to me once, that a man needs to feel like a man, I replied âwell Iâm not stopping himâ and had to watch this fragile creature try to explain to me that my strong personality could demean men.
Like, if I have to pretend you are a strong man and cater to that then clearly youâre not that strong dude.
