Tbh I think the "but data centers are important infrastructure, not just AI" talking point misses that like
Ok so roads are important infrastructure. A lot of stuff that's important happens on roads. Now, let's imagine that quadrillionaire Matt Stench has decided that the next big tech innovation is the Wide Car. It's a car that takes up six lanes despite seating only one passenger.
The Wide Car is supposed to be the future, and everyone's going to be driving Wide Cars, even though nobody who makes Wide Cars is turning a profit. Employers are offering Wide Cars as an employee benefit, and getting "nah." Some employers are going as far as demanding their employees drive Wide Cars, and the result is that people take time out of their workdays to get in the mandatory gas usage for their Wide Car before driving home in a regular car.
In spite of the fact that the Wide Car is clearly set to fail, there's an enormous push to expand to twelve-lane roads to accommodate a bunch of Wide Cars that simply will not materialize. This is not an organic response to demand, but a speculative investment that amplifies the existing issues with road development for no good reason.
That is the problem.
iām going to be really honest with you guys i think the tendency to read the absolute worst possible intentions into every action you donāt agree with is getting too automatic and itās eating you from the inside out
It's really funny how art can be so important and enriching and sometimes downright life-changing but every single piece of art about how important and life-changing art is is the lamest shit ever.
this vibe
Inspired by a tag on my Joker vs. John Constantine post from @cutelawlighter: John Constantine, as played by John Mulaney
āAll of hell thinks Iām such a good conman. I once sold my soul to three different Hell Lords, and they all started arguing over who got my soul when I died. They didnāt want to start a war over me so they made me alive again! They all think I did that on purpose. Frankly, I just straight-up forgot that Iād already sold my soul.
āAnd I mean, maybe you can forget that you did that once. Bit of a stretch, but sure. But twice? You forgot you sold your soul twice? What sort of moron do you have to be to do that?
āThatās a quote, by the way. Giovanni Zataraāyou know, that wizard in the suit who works with the Justice League? He looks all stuffy but yeah he actually said that. To me. Worst moment of my life.
āWorse than the demons, actually. Iāve got a problem.ā
āSo my friend Chas, right? He drives a taxi. Sometimes he helps me out with my occult problems. Never been clear on why. His wife hates it, I get performance anxiety when he watches, itās a whole thing.
āAnyway Chas and I are in a pub one day and heās like, āJohn, mate, youāre really lucky Iām immortal.ā And Iām like, āWhat?ā
āAnd Chas says, āyeah, I keep dying on your jobs. Hurts every time.ā And then he looks at my faceāwhich looks approximately like this at that point, by the wayāand goes, āMate, you didnāt notice?ā
āHonest to God, I did not. I thought that one time he got electrocuted was just, I donāt know, low voltage or whatever!ā
āI once wandered into a door in the basement of the Hall of Justice. I know. Bad idea, right? Well it turns out is was even worse than that, because I walked straight into a God Damn Escher painting. There were stairs on the ceiling, on the walls, everything was overlapping. I even saw a chimp holding a sword and wearing a detective hat.
āLet me tell you, I had no idea what was going on.
āAnd then I hear this voice, and itās deep. Like, this is Darth Vader deep, okay? And this voice just booms out, āJOHN CONSTANTINE. WHY HAVE YOU ENTERED THE TOWER OF FATE.ā
āAnd Iām like, āIām sorry! I was looking for the bathroom!ā
āAnd then I turned and bolted, and now I donāt open any doors in the Hall at all just in case I run into that guy again. I have to go outside to pee.ā
āWeāve all screwed up at work, right? Yeah, yeah, dont lie to me. We all know that feeling. Youāve been there.
āHereās the thing, though: none of you have ever screwed up at your job so badly that Batman shows up.
āLet me tell you: when youāre standing in the smoking ruins of an Arbyās that used to be possessed by a minor demon and you thought it would be smart to summon a different minor demon to fight it until it got tired and leftāthatās why the Arbyās blew up, by the wayāthe first thing you think when you see a jagged black shape advancing on you isnt ādude in a costume.ā No, no, youāre gonna think, āAUGH DEMONā and react accordingly.
āSo now Batman is standing there, expressionless, his face covered in holy water, and he says to meāand I canāt get my voice deep enough for this, so you guys will just have to imagine itāhe says, āJohn. Explain to me exactly what happened here.ā
āThe weirdest thing about it was that I swear his tone of voice sounded exactly like my dad.ā

Widescreen Safe
Yesterday I wrote a post breaking down some of the differences in the various home media releases for Babylon 5 (The original DVDs, the recent remaster released in Blu-ray, and the DVD release of that same remaster). I used to term "widescreen safe" when describing the live-action sequences of the original production, and afterwards I began to think about this process more in-depth.
For those who don't know, "widescreen safe" is a filmmaking process where you originally plan for a "fullscreen" broadcast (4:3 aspect ratio), but stage the set, characters, and camera to capture enough surrounding space to 'fill out' a "widescreen" image (16:9 aspect ratio) without breaking the immersion. All behind-the-scenes aspects of filmmaking (lights, microphones, puppeteers, set supports, etc.) are moved far enough out of the way that they won't show up on camera even with the wider view. The extras and background characters are likewise told to stay "in character" on the edge of the set, instead of stopping the instant they're out of view of the 'main' camera angle.
Babylon 5 famously did this in the early/mid-'90s, because even though fullscreen was the industry standard for TV in the USA, widescreen TVs already existed and the creators realized that in the coming years they would become the new default. So the entire series was shot on 35mm film as Widescreen Safe: The main characters and primary action would always be in the center-focus, so when it was cropped to fullscreen aspect ratio for broadcast the "full story" would be shown, but when widescreen technology became the norm in a few years they would be able to use the same footage for the new technology.
Nothing plot-critical was ever "hidden" in the widescreen shots, but they gave a wider view of the world. We see more random aliens walking in the background in the hallways, more Earthforce officers pressing buttons in the command center, more restaurant patrons eating dinner over the shoulder of the main characters, etc. More "flavor".
My favorite moment captured in the widescreen area was actually an accident, but it was perfect. From the episodes "Severed Dreams" in season three, which culminates in a masive space battle between Babylon 5 itself (and allies) against other Earthforce ships who support President Clark and his tyrannical regime. During the shooting a special effect went awry, and part of the set that was just supposed to spark/flash actually caught fire for real. Instead of halting shooting and ruining the shot, an extra was given a fire extinguisher and told to blow the fire out. This is one of those trivia bits that fans LOVE to point out as a Real Moment.
In the fullscreen shot, all you see is his arm extending from off-screen behind main character John Sheridan.
But in the widescreen shot, you actually see the actor walk in from off-screen and blow out the fire.
Would you know you were missing anything if all you'd seen was the fullscreen version? Not at all. You'd still see the fire over John Sheridan's shoulder and the fire extinguisher would blow it out. But with the widescreen version you also see another character. We never learn his name, and I don't even know if this guy appeared in another background shot after this episode, but he's a person.
And if you never see the widescreen version, you'd never know that this guy was there.
the headline here for me is that Bruce Boxleitner had the set catch fire unexpectedly around him and just. kept acting
if youāre ever in the position to choose between giving up and accepting defeat, and actually trying to fight the ancient unkillable god that is about to peel apart reality like a string cheese, remember this: scientifically speaking, you might as well give it a shot!
1.there were trees at the beginning of the world! there were trees so long ago that they predate bacteria that causes wood to decay. when a tree fell, it would lie there in stasis and there wasnāt any way of breaking down wood xylem on a molecular level in that way.
2. it seems obvious to say, but wood eating bacteria are literally incapable of comprehending what theyāre breaking down. Itās just not information conciously available to a microorganism. they donāt know what theyāre deconstructing, where it came from, bacteria have no way to even fathom the existence of a tree as a concept.
3. Regardless of the facts above, the world we live in today is a world where wood inevitably decomposes
it is worth fighting the unkillable god no matter how pointless it seems. it is worth taking the risk even though youre trying to accomplish something impossible. the reality in which you live was also once reality in which trees didnāt rot. You live in a reality that allows for existence before the possibility of destruction. you live in a reality where uncomprehending microbes break down matter that is so far beyond the scope of their comprehension that it feels comical to specify something so obvious. you live in a reality that occasionally allows unshakeable physical truths to be altered with no warning.
It is worth fighting the unkillable god because trees are so old they predate the source of their destruction, and it still did not spare them. It is worth fighting the unkillable god because bacteria rots unthinkingly, because there is room in our cosmos for destruction without comprehension on the part of the destroyer. It is worth fighting the unkillable god because now and then reality retracts the promise of immortality without fanfare, and when that happens there is no mercy for the ancient. the unmaking is not softer for the desecrators ignorance. for all things, existence is endless until the exact point where it ends.
so you might as well try to kill the unkillable god. it doesnāt seem likely, but at the beginning of the world, trees didnāt rot. so you never know! you never know
fight the unkillable god, because you may be mistaken about its unkillability.
fight the unkillable god, because you may be the first bacterium to take a successful bite.
fight the unkillable god, so as to set foot onto the path which leads to the god being killable.
the bacteria that couldn't eat the tree and the bacteria that could eat the tree had the same general understanding of the tree.
might as well take a bite.
Avatar AU where Aang wakes up like 3 days before Sozin's Comet returns and he has to speedrun the entire series.
The south pole and north pole exist on the same map file so if you break out of bound you can get from one to the other without having to travel the world.
Zuko's redemption stat and hair stat are tied to the same variable, so if you put the right wig on him he becomes automatically redeemed.
Toph's Earthbending allows for ample sequence breaks. If you create a ramp next to the Ba Sing Se wall you could launch yourself straight into the season 2 finale.
Unfortunately you have to complete Bato of the Water Tribe because otherwise June won't appear in the finale, softlocking from you beating the Fire Nation.
It's not actually necessary; but everyone always stops at the southern air temple to pick up Momo. It's become a tradition, where the speed runs are automatically invalidated if you didn't get him.
If I see you doing a Momoless run Iām unsubscribing.
Look it's called Any%. Momo% is it's own sub category, which is just how fast you can get Momo, and FullMomo% is Any% but you have to pick up Momo AND do all of the mini-game sections with him.
Momo% runs in 2005: Using the infinite glider glitch to fly straight to the southern air temple
Momo% runs in 2024: Modulating Sokka's SPM (sexism per minute) rate to manipulate the RNG for a favorable spawn in the underground Momo matrix
the speed at which i booted up my computer to make this was wild

No, you dont understand. YOUR groups inherits collective blood guilt that can never be removed and justifies all manner of harm against them. MY group just has some bad actors who should be punished on an individual basis.
you'd think so! but i anticipated your accusations years ago and embarked in a long-term project to swap all my blood with the blood of innocents. i have wiped myself clean of inherited sin from the crimes of my ancestors and am now guilty of a completely different and much cooler set of crimes

the thing is that every time they invent a new thing that everybody has to be able to do to get along in society, that also involves making some people disabled who weren't before, because they can't do the thing. and they never could do the thing, but it didn't used to be a disability.
driving a car. making a phone call. navigating the internet. getting a mortgage. you know? they keep adding new things that everybody has to be able to do or else there's something wrong with you. well maybe there's something wrong with driving a car. maybe it's a hideous activity. did they ever think of that
This is true, but to be fair, they also remove things you have to be able to do. I canʼt handwrite well; this is partly lack of practice and partly something that I would never have been good at. I now rarely need to write in a way others can read (I can, when necessary, as long as it doesnʼt also have to look good and I can take twice as long as anyone else and write a bit larger); I am still disabled in other ways, but that one is now barely a disability and getting less so every year.
Ryland Grace blowing up his academic career seems primarily by coming off as stubborn, uncollaborative, and willing to get in public fights with his more-established colleagues over exoplanet composition, resulting in him being politely but firmly denied job opportunities and research positions and turned down by potential collaborators because no one wants to deal with that. Heās too early-career for that to be an attitude anyone wants to put up with and mostly makes him register as Difficult To Work With. This is definitely a Type Of Guy.
Daniel Jackson blowing up his academic career is because he thinks aliens built the pyramids. No matter how polite he is about it or how sweet a guy he is, he still thinks aliens built the pyramids. This makes him register as a turbo racist conspiracy theorist who everyone is embarrassed whenever heās brought up. This is a very different Type Of Guy. However this is a Type Of Guy who everyone piles into his SAA panel and fills up the room because they want to gawk at what the Racist Conspiracy Theorist is saying about ancient aliens this time.
Canon always seems to go in the direction of āDaniel is sad because absolutely nobody listens to himā which is a crime. We were robbed of āDaniel is sad because the only people who listen to him are 1. Graham Hancock fans and 2. Grad students who are obviously only here so they can roast him afterā
Hahahaha oh nooo that is Significantly worse⦠I would be sad too š
#the show never addresses it because it canāt draw attention to the cracks in its own premise this way #but I think Daniel as a character only works if he hates pseudoarchaeology even MORE than the average archaeologist #because they make him look bad! #unfortunately he can never express in a way that makes anyone think heās NOT a racist crackpot #because anyone he tells will just think itās racist crackpot infighting
Daniel Jackson INSULTED and DESPONDENT that Graham Hancock thinks theyāre buddies against the Establishment is making me crack up. The worst insult!!!
Graham Hancock: āmy colleague, Dr. Daniel Jacksonāā
Daniel:
I am slowly losing my mind over the shift towards video as the default media format.
I do not find this to be an efficient way to absorb information. I am bored and distracted by the time the largely unnecessary introduction is over. I can't use ctrl+f to find the specific information I'm looking for. If there are instructions to follow, I don't want to have to constantly pause and back up to the part I need.
At least give me a fucking transcript.
crazy to see "I can't believe these young scholars let the homunculus do their homework" coming from wizards who I know copied all their spells from Sparikus's Commentaries on old grimoires when they were apprentices
My wards alert me that scribes keep adding annotations to my scroll saying that the homunculi are wrong sometimes. Of course they're wrong. If you don't have a use for bumbling, overeager, sycophantic, incompetent minions, how can you even call yourself a mage?
Commentaries also seem to be circulating widely-disproven ideas about the homunculi's mana consumption. Dude like half of the top artificers think the homunculi are going to try to kill us in our sleep and extract our souls for conjuring ink. We don't need to make up reasons to be distrustful of the treacherous and deceitful minions
one of my favorite types of media to experience is stuff that i know in another lifetime i would have been absolutely obsessed with as a kid/teen. going through something as an adult and being like yeah that was pretty good. however if this had made its way to me when i was 12 years old it would have fundamentally altered me and i hope it's fundamentally altering some other 12 year old out there right now. that's the good stuff.
I've been doing this some with music, like I could absolutely see myself having Special Interest-ed Guster when I was a teenager if someone had pointed me at them and instead I'm just like yeah Ganging Up On the Sun and Keep it Together have some great songs on them don't they.

im really losing my shit thinking about vulcan childrens music and television. who could forget such hits as ā3 is an appropriate numberā and āwalking in the street could lead to maiming or deathā
the vulcan equivalent of the wiggles is just 3 normally dressed individuals reciting multiplication tables in unison
Speaking as someone with very little knowledge of Star Trek - Iāve seen like three episodes from random versions and I read Spockās WorldĀ - I violently disagree with this.
Even before I had such minimal knowledge as I do now, I thought thatĀ āvulcanā was a very appropriate word for them. Itās not that they donāt have emotions, if anything they have more than humans, they just run hard and deep, like volcanoes. You donāt want that thing to erupt.
So I imagine vulcan childrenās TV is much like Sesame Street. Here is a muppet with anger issues! He spilled his milk and it made him ANGRY!!! Here comes someone dressed in completely normal clothes to say yes, that was indeed unfortunate, but anger is an irrational response to such a thing and not in keeping with the teachings of Surak; let us now explore different forms of meditation as emotional control, one of which includes three normally dressed individuals reciting multiplication tables in unison.
The Vulcans got their own version of Sesame Street - under the same name (albeit localized; it is still called Sesame Street according to the universal translator) - after first contact. To both culturesā surprise, it required very little adaptation overall, and many Vulcan parents didnāt even realize at first that it was a localized spinoff of a show from an entirely different planet. If anything, the transitions between the parts aimed at teaching kids emotional regulation and social skills, and the parts aimed at teaching basic math and phonics, are even smoother than in any of Earthās versions.
The most conspicuous addition is a pair of twin Muppets - Sovak and T'pela. Theyāre eternal toddlers, much like our own Elmo, and thus at the same stage as a large chunk of the target audience - when much of their early development of emotional regulation skills take place. Sovak is quick to panic, often getting himself into danger trying to hide, or causing small boo-boos to his friends and teachers and parents clinging to them for dear life. T'pela is quick to anger, often breaking things or frightening other children - barely at a more advanced stage in their own emotional regulation skill development - until she calms down. The two are never shamed for their outbursts - after all, theyāre only toddlers - but at least once an episode, one or both of them is sent into, well, an episode.
And from there, itās up to an adult to step in and coach them through their grounding exercises.
But again, they are only toddlers, so they donāt know enough math or phonics to find a good grounding exercise on their own! How are they supposed to count by threes if they donāt know how to count to three at all? How are they supposed to find everything in their vicinity that begins with the letter B(-equivalent) if they donāt know what the letter B is? Well, itās time for a lesson!
And so, once weāve had our lesson about the wonders of 3, or B, or any other lesson of the day, we can calmly - and logically - resolve whatever caused the problem.
Their segments end up being adapted back into Earth languages because they turn out to work wonders on neurodivergent human children, as well.
I guess the reason all that Backrooms stuff has never really fazed me is because I worked in on-site networking support for a while, and literally every city's downtown district is just Like That once you get off the beaten path. Not just the really big cities, either; the one I'm currently living in has a population of less than 250 000 ā metro area included ā and a downtown area about six blocks across, and the service corridors still manage to do some House of Leaves shit. At one point I was trying to map the route of a misbehaving network cable, started out in a shopping mall parking garage, and ended up surfacing in the basement of the casino across the street. Totally unsecured ā apparently neither the mall's administration nor the casino's managers knew that particular service corridor existed.
Like, I once bumped into a fully stocked and operational Coke machine in an unlit maintenance corridor twenty feet below ground level. Its display lighting was the only illumination for a hundred yards in either direction. I don't even know what it was plugged into.
Somewhere below this city there's a room the size of a high school gymnasium filled floor to ceiling with rotting mattresses. I've seen it with my own eyes ā and, more importantly, smelled it with my own nose. I can't recommend the experience.
(That last one isn't even mysterious. The room in question is within easy walking distance of the basement of a major hotel, if you know where you're going; I imagine the hotel started stashing their old mattresses there at some point rather than pay to have them hauled away, and over the ensuing decades the situation got out of hand.)
In response to a couple of recurring questions in the notes:
I don't have any experience with the weirder corners of university campuses ā my work in that particular job just never happened to take me there. I did, however, once have to do a cable trace in the basement of a former Christian elementary school. It had haphazardly been subdivided into numerous tiny rooms, some as little as ten feet across, with no central hallways or apparent floor plan. Every single room was, for reasons that were and remain unclear to me, full of broken kitchen appliances. One room in particular contained an enormous industrial freezer unit that was larger in its smallest dimension than any of the doors leading to it. Was it delivered in pieces and assembled on site? Did they build the room around it? That one still bothers me a little bit.
No, I did not drink the Morlock Tunnel Coke. What are you, nuts?
