when a government bans young people from using social media, and then categorises messenger apps like Signal and WhatsApp as "social media", they are pushing those young people toward using text messages, a fundamentally insecure form of communication. texts are not encrypted in transit and can be read by both the sender's mobile carrier and the recipient's. that also means they can be leaked in data breaches, subpoenaed, or just handed over willingly to law enforcement at the carriers' discretion.
hmm. I wonder why governments might want this
alright I've got to do some quick math to explain attitudes towards AI to my boss.
we're looking to create an AI policy, and when we were talking about this, my boss (older millennial) was genuinely shocked to hear that younger people do not (seem) to view AI positively (a la the recent commencement speakers being booed)
please rb for larger sample size!
Question 1/3
What is your age, and do you feel AI is a net positive or net negative in our lives today?
under 18, AI is a net positive
under 18, AI is a net negative
18-29, AI is a net positive
18-29, AI is a net negative
30-45, AI is a net positive
30-45, AI is a net negative
46-60, AI is a net positive
46-60, AI is a net negative
over 60, AI is a net postive
over 60, AI is a net negative
Question 2/3
How often do you visit or interact with museums/archives (whether in person or online)?
Frequently (multiple times per month)
Often (multiple times per year)
Occasionally (a couple times per year)
Rarely (once every couple of years)
Never :(
Question 3/3
If you saw a museum was using AI in exhibits, marketing, research, etc., would you be more or less inclined to visit that museum?
under 18, more inclined
under 18, less inclined
18-29, more inclined
18-29, less inclined
30-45, more inclined
30-45, less inclined
46-60, more inclined
46-60, less inclined
over 60, more inclined
over 60, less inclined
Thank you for helping with this data collection. Please rb for as big a sample as possible!

Dang. OP disabled reblogs on the hestia self care post, I was hoping Start Toiling would enter the lexicon.
Start Toiling
whenever I watch a movie where people are like dismembering someone alive and they're all chanting "hail satan hail satan" I always think "WOAH WOAH WOAHH GUY'S I NEVER ASKED YOU TO DO THIS! I DON'T NEED YOU TO DO THIS! I HAVE A TUMBLR ACCOUNT YOU CAN FOLLOW ME ON!"
I kind of donāt want to believe you, but at the same time I know what itās like to have a toxic fandom.

All my haters become aligators when I activate my gatorinator.
you laugh now, but when my gatorinator is ready, it's all over
update:
transmogrifying my haters into an animal that is known for something called the "death roll" has backfired in a manner no one could have forecasted
Having taken stock of the situation, it's not as bad as I originally thought. It's not like these crocodilians are an urgent problem, much less a representation of my own mortality. There's no ticking clock here.
well now you're just doing this on purpose
I think that's the highest tags forecast I have received so far.
Posts that have 100k gators to me.
Actually there are only 5 gators in my post, but it is an understandable mistake.
Now there are 100,005 gators on this post
...
You know what? Good job.
Other people said this post had thousands of notes in their mind, but only contributed two notes.
You? You said that it had 100k gators to you.
And then you did it.
+1 respect point.
now that's what i call a

applying for new job:
Two seemingly contradictory beliefs that we actually must strive to hold simultaneously:
You don't owe anyone anything
Meaning: you do not have to make yourself suffer for the convenience of others
We owe each other everything
Meaning: we could not survive without each other and everything we do to help another is crucial to ensuring our own continued survival
You don't need to be a doormat, but also don't get comfortable slamming the door when you have the resources to extend a hand instead.
Planning for a flight now consists of planning out how to document the legal violations the airline is inevitably going to commit.
Since I started using a wheelchair, I have had exactly one (1) flight where an airline didnāt break the law.
The question isnāt āAre airlines breaking the law?ā They absolutely are, on almost every flight. The questions are āDoes the wheelchair user know their rights?ā (most donāt), and āAre they physically and mentally able to document the violations and report them to the DOT?ā (most canāt).
[ID: @diffusedmuse āOne question if you have a moment: do you confront airlines themselves or go straight to the DOT? For example, they often push me into signing a release of liability in case they wreck my wheelchair, which Iām fairly sure is illegal but Iām afraid to say anything and be denied my flight.ā]
Under US law, it is definitely illegal for an airline to make you sign a release of liability for transporting your wheelchair. I would definitely advise you not sign any release of liability. The newest statistics show that airlines damage or lose 25 wheelchairs per day. (Source) You canāt afford for them toĀ notĀ fix or replace your wheelchair if they damage it.
ā§382.35 Ā May carriers require passengers with a disability to sign waivers or releases?
ā(b) You must not require passengers with a disability to sign waivers of liability for damage to or loss of wheelchairs or other assistive devices.ā
(Source)
I always insist on having my wheelchair in the cabin, but if the flight has less than 100 seats theyāre not required to have space in-cabin, and if you have a power chair itās not going to fit in the in-cabin wheelchair closet. So I realize some people have to put their chairs in cargo.
Personally Iād pocket whatever release form they gave me, scan it in when I got home and include it in my DOT complaint. I bet the DOT would be very interested to see what release theyāre trying to get you to sign.
I have on several occasions had airline employees threaten to not let me fly, try to maneuver me into agreeing to take a different flight, or insinuate that if I continue to insist they follow the law they wonāt let me fly. This is illegal, and I let them know that I know that it is illegal.
ā§382.11 Ā What is the general nondiscrimination requirement of this part?
ā(4) You must not take any adverse action against an individual (e.g., refusing to provide transportation) because the individual asserts, on his or her own behalf or through or on behalf of others, rights protected by this part or the Air Carrier Access Act.āĀ
(Source)
So yes, I confront the airline employees myself, although I realize not everyone is able to do so. I always have a copy of the law with me - I have a document where I put together the clauses that I know theyāre going to violate, and I print out a couple copies before I fly. I also have the full ACAA on my phone. Only once has an airline employee ever looked at the law - they generally just flat out refuse to read it - but I have it with me so I can prove I know what the law says. That means that canāt sayĀ āthatās not in the law,ā they can only sayĀ āI donāt care what the law says,ā and that is not going to show in their favor when they have to justify their actions to the DOT.
I definitely also report the airline to the DOT after I get back from my trip. The DOTās formal investigation process is to have the airline investigate themselves and report their findings back to the DOT. IME the airline always, every time, lies and claims they didnāt break any laws. They generally accidentally admit to breaking a couple laws, but for the majority it ends up being a he says/she says situation.Ā
Personally, I want the airline to get fined for every clause of the ACAA they break when I fly, not just the ones they accidentally admit to because they are that ridiculously unfamiliar with the law theyāre required by law to know. (The record so far is fourteenĀ clauses broken on one flight.) So as of my last flightĀ I now record every interaction I have with an airline employee. On that flight, the minute I realized they had found a new and ridiculous way to violate the ACAA, I set my phone to video and put it in a shallow outside pocket in my personal bag with the camera facing out. When I got home, I extracted the audio file from the video, made a transcript, and forwarded both the audio file and the transcript to the DOT along with my complaint. When the airline investigated themselves and lied about what they did, I then forwarded the audio file and transcript to them as well and proved that their employees lied. It was interesting watching them scramble to explain themselves.Ā
The DOT takes a year to process complaints, so I havenāt heard back from the DOT on that one yet, but Iām particularly interested to see how this complaint turns out as itās going to be impossible for them to squirrel out of any of their violations. I have proof.
After that last flight I bought myself an audio recorder (like the kind you use to record lectures in school) which I now have hanging from my personal bag. Some airlines prohibit photography and video in their contract of carriage, but I have yet to find one that prohibits audio recordings. Part of my prep for this trip has been testing that audio recorder to see what the range is and how well it records, so I know where on my bag to hang it to be sure it records everything that happens.
If youāre recording audio, keep that in mind when youāre dealing with airline employees. Ask for names or read out their name badge (āJane Smith, right?ā) and describe whatās happening if itās not apparent from what they say. (āWait, so youāre telling me I need to sign this release of liability form before youāll transport my wheelchair? You do realize thatās illegal, right?ā)
I have an audio recording of an airline employee on my last flight sayingĀ āI donāt care what the law says!ā and my response which wasĀ āI donāt think the DOT is going to be very impressed with that.ā Iām pretty sure theyāre not. I canāt wait to see the DOTās response to the airline.
This is absolutely amazing. And itās great that OP outlines several different levels of protecting yourself against and documenting these illegal actionsābecause, yeah, not everyone can or wants to go All The Way. But to those who do? We salute you.
Anyway, know your rights when flying, yāall [same source as above, we just wanna highlight it].
Internet commentors turned on D'Arcee Neal after he was forced to crawl off his flight when his wheelchair didn't turn up
Thatās my friend D'Arcee from our cerebral palsy support group. This happened over a decade ago. We rallied around him hard and the ableism was ferocious.

Humans have finally managed to land on Mars, only to find a locked safe buried in the Martian soil. The key is apparently on Earth, but no one knows where.
The galactic council watched on to see how humanity would handle the task, much as they had with several species before. What the test was supposed to show was whether or not a species of violent nature could ever be brought to work together. They finally picked something up, another ship already headed to Mars? Was it possible humans were that clever to have found the key, maybe it was more specialists and equipment to analyze the locked crate to ensure it was safe to open. A few minutes after landing, they got another broadcast from the red planet.
āThis is the LockPickingLawyer and today Iāve got something quite special, this locked alien chest. First of all I have to thank everyone who recommended me for the job, Iām honored that you all thought of me. Now letās get to workā
The council representatives were confused as they started analyzing the translation, before even getting through the name he spoke something haunting
āNormally I donāt say things like this but this lock is quite unique, however with no security pins it will still be quite quick.ā
āThere we go, a click on 3⦠ā
All the species of the galactic council sat dumbfounded, they spent many galactic cycles refining and perfecting their study and in all their time not a singular race had tried this method. Click after click, even in such an intricate lock the human had only spent around five minutes tampering with it.
āThere we go, now while I canāt open this as part of my video I can say that I at least have a clue what the key should look like in case it ever gets locked again. I admire the design choices and the fact that at least it was harder to get open than anything Master Lock has madeā
we are the āoh, I know a guyā teamwork species
[Image description: a screenshot of tumblr tags reading
#tumblr fiction # THATāS THE THING THO #humans are a team effort species #but weāre a team effort species THROUGH individual specialized roles! #you donāt all try to go hunt the elephant! #you have a handful of dudes who are experts in hunting elephant! #and they do it!]

Thatās what Iāve been trying to figure out how to say about adulting. Adulting isnāt about knowing how to handle every situation. Adulting is about knowing who knows how to handle any given situation, and how to contact them. No one knows all the things; the adultiest of adults still has places where they donāt have a damn clue ā they just call another person whoās adultier in that area than they are.
this reminds me of that orangutan who kept escaping his enclosure, and they couldnāt figure out how he was doing it, and the only thing they could guess was that he was climbing the āunclimbableā rock wall that formed one side of the enclosure
and so they brought in a small team of human extreme rock free climbing specialists, and after a few hours of trying they found out how to climb it and then the zoo was able to redesign it to keep the orangutans in
because, like, orangutans are without question better at figuring out how to climb something than humans are⦠but they arenāt better at it than EVERY human
and hereās something else related to all this. Maybe itās simply because wild creatures donāt have the luxury of spending energy the same way, but not only is it common for humans to value an activity based almost entirely on how difficult it is to doā¦
but almost universally, as soon as a human can reliably do the difficult thing, their response to their own success is āokay now increase the difficulty until i canāt do it anymore, and let me try againā
like, cooks, artists of all kinds, crafters⦠hell, a huge part of video game design is based around this truth, that as soon as a human can do the difficult thing they are attempting, they will want to try a harder version.
What if i tried to sculpt it in half the time, what if i tried to paint it using only two colors, what if i tried to make a cake but balanced on one edge, what if i tried to play a drum rhythm on the body of my guitar while i played this song⦠i know i just broke the world record by beating this 10 hour game in four minutes and fifty two seconds but now what if i tried to beat it even faster
itās a totally normal human thing, but also⦠it is an absolutely insane trait to have
Maybe I can convince y'all to act right by framing things in terms of social engineering. People will be a whole lot more likely to do whatever shit you're trying to hector them into doing if you're not constantly being a dick the whole time. Being niceys is a powerful social engineering tool such as all of the times I have maliciously manipulated people into fulfilling my whims using an evil sociopathic manipulation technique i like to call "asking nice and then saying thanks after"

Always bear in mind that there is absolutely no legitimate evidence that Luigi was actually the one who killed the insurance company guy.
Of course he wasn't. He was at a party with me that day.
No but like literally, actually. All bits aside.
He didn't do it.
The cops very clearly planted evidence on him because they had to make an arrest because all eyes were on them and whoever actually did the deed was making them look stupid.
Why would the real killer hero have kept the weapon on his person and traveled two states over while carrying it and a manifesto in his bag, conveniently turning the crime into a federal matter? The same guy whose bag they found in a park, filled with monopoly money? Why did the police turn off their bodycams, take Luigi's stuff, drive a block away, turn their bodycams back on, go back into the restaurant, and then arrest him?
From the moment of his arrest, even left-of-center media has been presuming his guilt without examining anything (e.g. calling him "the killer" instead of "alleged" or "accused") and then when I say he didn't do it, the nearest person chimes in with some quip that tells me they think he did do it but should go free anyway. Don't get me wrong, I would have the same attitude if he had done it. But he didn't. It makes me feel like the only sane person in the world, even among my staunchly leftist friends.
