theo van gogh was the one who suggested that his older brother vincent start seriously painting. as soon as theo was gainfully employed he gave vincent around 15% of his own yearly salary for art supplies, lodging, and food. about 2/3rds of vincent's surviving letters were to theo (including vincent's earliest and last letters), all of which were found stored in theo's desk. theo's child, vincent willem, was born on january 31st, 1890, and vincent was so delighted by his nephew that he painted almond blossoms for him. vincent shot himself half a year later on july 29th, 1890. theo's distress at his brother's death worsened his syphilis symptoms and he died half a year after his brother on january 25th, 1891 (four days before vincent willem's first birthday). theo was reburied next to vincent in auvers-sur-oise at the request of theo's wife johanna.
Almond Blossoms, 1890, Vincent van Gogh
And that love lived on Theo's wife, Johanna, who was the one who pushed for the preservation of Vincent's paintings. Johanna who made sure that her husband's beloved brother would not be forgotten. Johanna who fought tooth and nail so that Theo and Vincent would never be forgotten. Johanna who carried the family legacy, who made sure that the works of Vincent would be kept in her possession. And then Vincent Willem, named for a uncle so loved, carried this legacy and founded the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam.
The van Gogh family history is deeply interwoven with love. It was the love of a brother that gave a young man the courage to paint and the resources to do so. It was the love of a woman for her husband and her husband's beloved brother that made that story known. And it was the love of a nephew, who was so deeply loved even if for such a short time, that made it possible for the world to know Vincent van Gogh.
At the end of The Princess Bride, when Inigo tells Westley he doesn't know what to do with himself now that he's not in the revenge business anymore, and Westley tells him he'd be a wonderful Dread Pirate Roberts?
The name of Dread Pirate Roberts' ship is The Revenge. Which means Inigo still gets to be in The Revenge business.
I have been watching this movie since I was at least five years old, and I never made the connection until now. (Feel free to tell me you all saw it long ago.)
Now. Just now as I read it.
Fun ADHD hack is that you're allowed to just go to the library and reserve a study room for a couple of hours and make all your phone calls or whatever adult shit you need to do but can't because your house is for House Stuff and for some reason your brain has designated "phone calls for doctors and other such things" as School Adjacent and therefore refuses to do it in an insufficently academic environment. Like it's free. You can just do that.
Fr I go to write/do emails/other 'job' stuff at the library all the time. It also helps them when you reserve the rooms to do Job Stuff because it counts towards your library's patronage statistics, which helps them get funding.

i downloaded this god damn episode just so everyone could watch this fukkin clip
The feedback bit is inspired.
Keegan Michael Keyâs quick thinking to get involved was GENIUS.
Most deserving mic drop Iâve ever seen, and he didnât even have one.
brilliant
unsung benefit i think a lot of ppl are sleeping on with using the public library is that i think its a great replacement for the dopamine hit some ppl get from online shopping. it kind of fills that niche of reserving something that you then get to anticipate the arrival of and enjoy when it arrives, but without like, the waste and the money.
bonus it ALSO fills that dopamine hit of in-person shopping. âoh I didnât go in looking for this but hmm, Iâm tempted⌠I canât resist⌠oh ho ho I have made some irresponsible decisions at the library today [carrying my stack of ten random books]â and then it doesnât even matter if you donât like them because a) free b) youâre gonna give them back anyway
Librarian here! Please please please please PLEASE do this! We donât have any way to know if you read them, and we donât care! Weâre happy to see those books go out because that helps our stats. And that affects how much money we can get.
So grab that silly paperback romance, and maybe this new YA fantasy, oh and check for the new movies too! And donât forget to check Libby and hoopla for music and ebooks and e-audio.

How to protect yourself during stampede
this isnât the usual thing Iâd share on my stupid nerd blog, but this is SO important. I was nearly crushed in a crowd like this once. It was terrifying because you have NO control over the panicking mass of humans around you. you are just at the mercy of all this chaotic force. this is a real thing that can happen very suddenly! it did happen in the news recently! My situation was, the olympics was happening in my city, I was on my way home from school, and a crowd of people suddenly flooded into the street around me. in seconds it went from, busy-city-street-crowded, to, wtf I canât even move crowded. I was so pressed against the backpack of the man in front of me, my feet lifted off the ground a moment. People were climbing lamp posts, signs, bus shelters, trees, everything to get up out of it. it was like the street became an ocean of people, and all the peopleâs survival instincts were making them dumber. everyone was yelling. no one knew how to solve it. police, fire fighters and medics saved us by breaking the locks on the inside of the mall we were trapped next to. a huge group flooded into the building, releasing a bit of the pressure on the people outside. I was in that group that got in.
We were trapped in the mall awhile. Because the olympics was on, they had big screens in a few sitting areas of the mall that would normally be showing the games. but now the coverage was focused on this crowd surge. They showed a helicopter shot of the building we were now in, totally surrounded by colorful dots. a solid mass of humans with no space between. I know someone was partially trampled and needed medics, because I saw that, but i donât know the statistics on who else was hurt, hopefully no one killed! I donât know if these methods can definitely save you, but they might give you a better chance. so watch and share!
Sharing to my own stupid nerd blog for the same reason, this is SO IMPORTANT. Human crushes are one of the most unexpected ways to die. People go out to a show or a sports game, and make it there, but they never come back. Other strategies include staying away from large obstacles (like fences) that you could get crushed against, and doing your best to stay above the crowd. Try to climb onto something if you can.
And also â not to get nitpicky with deadly tragedies, but theyâre called âhuman crushes,â not âstampedes.â Itâs an important difference in description and also in respect. The deaths usually happen because the victims are pinned together in a tight space, they canât breathe (as in the video) and they suffocate. âStampedeâ doesnât convey what actually happened to those people. The crush that happened in Seoul recently wasnât because people âstampeded,â it was because they couldnât move at all and they suffocated. But calling it a âstampede,â youâd think it was the people themselves that ran over each other, like wild animals. Itâs disrespectful and untrue.
Horrifyingly, the victims of many human crushes have been blamed for their own deaths, which are usually purely accidental or due to criminal mismanagement from authorities. If youâre in a mental place to read about tragedies and police corruption, check out the Hillsborough Disaster, in which 97 people died due to the incompetence of the police, who then blamed everything on the victims: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillsborough_disaster
If you canât play the video:
1. Stand like a boxer. Nice wide stance, arms up like youâre preparing to either throw a punch or shield against one, i.e. elbows bent by your waist and fists by your shoulders. That will keep some space around your chest
2. If you fall and canât get up, roll onto your side and curl up in the foetal position

Really happy to see this at my local library
OOOOH. *happy YA librarian dance*
I want this in every library, everywhere. After all, some kids wonât even google this stuff because they donât want parents/siblings checking their browser history.
This is really awesome. And if youâre not familiar with how the Dewey Decimal system works - the numbers subject-based, which means these numbers are applicable in EVERY library. So if you see something you want to research on this list - look for those same numbers in any of your local libraries.
This is wonderful.

Local house witch telling you to please learn basic housekeeping skills.
Itâs not your fault if no one ever taught you but YouTube is a magical place and can teach you at your own pace.
Someone asked me what housekeeping skills Iâd recommend learning.
Keep in ming that this is not me shaming you, I know you have your reasons, folks. This is just a guy who enjoys clean spaces asking that you start learning now.
Hereâs what I suggest as an adult who has lived with other adults who didnât have housekeeping skills:
First and foremost, learn about all the places in your house that need to be cleaned and understand how often they should be cleaned. the American Cleaning Institute (I guess thatâs a thing) has a good article about basic cleaning info. Plus this video on cleaning tips is great!
Learn how to do your dishes. HOT water is the only way to clean your dishes.
Learn how to clean your shower head, especially if you live in a place with hard water. Same goes for your sinks.
Learn how to do your laundry correctly. Even without the whole âseparating whites and colorsâ thing, there are things you need to learn about washing your clothes. Learn what the tags mean, too.
Also, you donât have to use fabric softener and you shouldnât use it on towels or any fabric meant to absorb. (Learn about laundromats) And please learn how to clean out your dryer vent, itâs a safety hazard!
Get a disinfecting cleaner for your high-touch areas, especially the gross ones like the bathroom. Just because it doesnât look dirty, doesnât mean itâs clean!
Learn how to sweep, mop, and vacuum effectively.
Youâll also want to make sure to change out your homeâs air filters.
TL;DR, here are some cleaning videos.
How to Clean Everything in Your Bathroom
How to Clean Everything in Your Kitchen
Livingroom Cleaning Routine
How to Clean Everything in Your Bedroom
Now these resources are not the end-all-be-all, but I think if you donât know much about cleaning your space this is a good way to start.
Home Comforts: The Art and Science of Keeping House, by Cheryl Mendelson, is THE book if you want a huge-ass Tome to consult. She very literally covers EVERYTHING, everything in keeping a house. itâs fucking ENORMOUS. You can hurt someone with this thing.
The chapters are very broad but go so, so very deep.
For example, the first chapter is Food, and it covers EVERYTHING. What is a meal? What foods traditionally make up those meals (in the US, natch). How to serve food, for guests and yourself. How to clean and care for everything in the kitchen. Kitchen linens. Food Safety (pages and pages of how to store food by whatever method). Over 130 pages for âjustâ that.
Fabric care. Sleep care. Lighting. Cleaning every goddamn surface you can imagine. Fucking Domestic Employment Law. She used to be a lawyer, you see.
To quote the Vox writer Constance Grady, âWritten with a lawyerâs exhaustive eye for detail and a pedantâs belief in the inarguable correctness of oneâs own opinion, Home Comforts tells you everything: the correct way to use a broom, exactly how many inches down you should fold your top sheet, why you should use carbon steel knives (and how best to care for them). It is so exacting in its didactic instructions that it makes Martha Stewart seem mellow.â
Itâs also on archive.org ( ÍĄ~ ÍĘ ÍĄÂ°)
Hey. Hey you. The person aimlessly scrolling, stuck in an immobilized standoff with your brain
It's not your fault. You won't be stuck forever. I know you're trying. I know you hate it. It's ok.
And tell the Mean Voice in your head that it's not helping. It knows as well as you do that you would get up and Just Start the task if you could. You're not doing this on purpose.
Take a deep breath. Relax your jaw. I see you trying so hard to break out of it, but you can't force it. You'll get Unstuck eventually. All you can do in the interim is be kind to yourself.
hold on a second manâŚ
