Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?

It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!

today in RW modding: Actual, Outright Content Theft

the sequence of events here is sort of funny to me because a different giant content mod attributed to that person was put onto the wiki despite the mod not being public. and i simply pinged the other dev to say "hey it has to be public to be on the wiki" so they made it public. no big deal.

but today someone came into the mods wiki channel to say "hey i've been out of the community for a few years and i checked out the wiki page for my mod and it's credited to someone i don't fucking know? i made the mod and i can prove it, i never gave them permission to use it, can the credit be corrected please"

and i was like yeah sure that's fucked up i'll get right on that and i went and fixed it. and i went to look at the other mod out of curiosity and uh.

It doesn't use the stolen mod as a dependency. They straight up fucking copied the other mod's files and then made a wiki page for it and listed themselves as the developer.

so i wanted to ping the person on discord cus like, the original dev already left a comment on the workshop page but i also want to want to know what the hell they were thinking. and if they are in any RW discords, their discord user isn't the same as their steam user.

however. the only contributor to the wiki pages for their mod also lists that mod as their mod on their userpage. so now i've pinged a wiki admin asking to contact them via the fucking wiki (!?!?!?!!?!) to ask what's going on and also if the other stuff in their mod was actually made by them, because what the fuck

the wiki admin left a message on their talk page saying this is a "gross breach of modding conduct and courtesy" and has asked them to verify the other regions were actually made by them otherwise the pages will be taken down in 2 weeks. epic

it really like ... irritates? me how very intentional this was. like, it's theoretically very easy to steal a rw mod:

download it from the workshop or raindb

go to the download and copy its root folder's content

paste that into Rain World/RainWorld_Data/StreamingAssets/mods/modname

congrats, you now have a local copy of a mod which can be reuploaded to the workshop under your user.

but like, a few issues with this

(a) when you download it, you will be downloading something attributed to and uploaded by someone else. it is unavoidable that you're downloading something that you did not make.

(b) even after reuploading it, the mod's modinfo.json will still list the original author as the author. you would have to edit that file to replace the original dev's name to fully cover it up.

(c) this is a far cry from integrating that mod's files into your own mod, which is what this was.

anyway, the thief responded to the admin saying "Yes, I did copy some of the files of Lunar Aerie, excuse me for this." :|

um. they also completely blanked out the wiki page for lunar aerie. instead of just like, fixing it or letting someone else fix it or, yknow, not doing that at all, because i had already removed all the links to their mod. so i had to undo it and then fix the creature table which was just wildly incorrect. Okay
