I highly recommend Forvo.com, the website where native speakers of a language contribute their time and voices to read words and names in their own language. It is a fantastic way to expand your world, open up your ears, and it's way more likely to nab a hit than just googling.
The soil testing equipment on Curiosity makes a buzzing noise and the pitch of the noise changes depending on what part of an experiment Curiosity is performing, this is the way Curiosity sings to itself.
So some of the finest minds currently alive decided to take incredibly expensive important scientific equipment and mess with it until they worked out how to move in just the right way to sing Happy Birthday, then someone made a cake on Curiosityâs birthday and took it into Mission control so that a room full of brilliant scientists and engineers could throw a birthday party for a non-autonomous robot 225 million kilometres away and listen to it sing the first ever song sung on Mars*, which was Happy Birthday.
This isnât a sad story, this a happy story about the ridiculousness of humans and the way we love things. We built a little robot and called it Curiosity and flung it into the star to go and explore places we canât get to because itâs name is in our nature and then just because we could, we taught it how to sing.
Thatâs not sad, thatâs awesome.
*this is different from the first song ever played on mars (Reach For The Stars by Will.I.Am) which happened the year before, singing is different from playing

Esa Soy Yo - Puerto Candelaria (Vocalist and trumpeter Zafraâs flow and energy make this a standout.)
FLOWERS - Ruti (Carefree and groovy. I donât have the vocabulary to describe their voice, but I like how it sounds both clear and a little raspy.)
HIGHER - ATEEZ (This Kpop boy groupâs Japanese discography is underrated; smooth beats, lovely ad libs.)
Higher - Francis of Delirium (Dreamy alt-rock, sounds a little like Florence + the Machine in both the layered vocals and the invitation to suspend cynicism.)
Jasmin 17 - Syd (I like how itâs a twist on the classic âyouâre complicated and flighty and I want you just the way you areâ premise, making it âIâm complicated and flighty and I want you just the way I am.â Lovely production.)
Look At Me Look At Me - LEENALCHI (The combination of the pansori vocals with a new wave sound is just fresh and intriguing.)
1+1 =0 - Meaningful Stone ft. Jay Som (Airy vocals and a little jangly guitar team up for a dreamy summer song that straddles the line between indie rock and shoegaze.)
Roll the dice - Rolling Quartz ft. LEE SIYEON (Warning for flashing lights in the music video, but the single version doesnât have subs. Anyway, really cool collaboration and Iâm looking forward to exploring their discography further.)
Shatter - Makthaverskan (Post-punk with a compelling lead singer. Maja Milner lets loose some Morten Harket-esque awoos near the end and it is so fun.)
Shut The Door - Young K (Bright Kpop-rock song whose real hook is the soaring voice delivering lyrics about a burnt-out person finding a modicum of relief at home.)
The Waves - Giant Rooks ft. Solann (Synth-driven indie rock song; the counterpoint as it develops is satisfying.)
Yaygara - Sosyete â25 (Groovy psychedelic rock sound with influences of what the band calls, âMediterranean disco popââlooking forward to diving into the whole album at this point.)

Iâve settled on this Tolkien reference because itâs reflective of my current overlap of enjoying music and natureâand the past tense is a fun little twist for me. I used to talk more about books, but Iâve been in an extended reading slump.
i don't really like it when western mythological terms are applied haphazardly to essentially unrelated ideas. this is a completely lost battle but a lĂłng is really not a dragon, it is its own thing with only surface level similarities
i especially dislike many works that try to fold all sorts of different mythologies into a single consistent schema because they tend to heavily privilege western conceptions in doing so- see 'dragonology' books twisting basically every mythical reptilian under the sun into the mould of 'a species of dragon', implicitly centring the beowulf-style firebreather as the default from which all other mythologies derive, or basically anything that does worldwide vampire bloodlines
relatedly a qĂlĂn is not a unicorn, a fènghuĂĄng is not a phoenix, and a jiÄngshÄŤ is not a vampire, and it can impede understanding when they're approached from the standpoint of being the 'chinese version' of these concepts from western myth
Imagine being Anais Mitchell and writing a song about the rhetoric of fascism so incisive and prescient that 10 years later an actual fascist would use that exact rhetoric down to the highly-specific phrasing in his presidential campaign. But also it took 10 years for the project you wrote that song for to move from living room shows to concept album to theater workshop to off-Broadway to Broadway, and its Broadway debut ended up coinciding with said fascist's successful bid for the presidency, and now it looks like your song that you wrote in 2005 is a super unsubtle reference to that one particular and highly-topical politician.
Frankly if I were her I would have started killing.
