sometimes you start reading a fic and immediately youâre like OH this was written by a child. okay. please know that i am proud of you but also i cannot keep reading this
âthis kid is in eighth grade, and their teacher just told them that using âsaidâ is bad, so theyâre plumbing the depths of the dictionary for every single other dialogue tag that exists - and some that donât - and Iâm proud of them for expanding their vocabulary, but I must depart all the sameâ
"Should parents read their daughter's texts or monitor her online activity for bad language and inappropriate content?"
Earlier today, I served as the âyoung womanâs voiceâ in a panel of local experts at a Girl Scouts speaking event. One question for the panel was something to the effect of, âShould parents read their daughterâs texts or monitor her online activity for bad language and inappropriate content?â
I was surprised when the first panelist answered the question as if it were about cyberbullying. The adult audience nodded sagely as she spoke about the importance of protecting children online.
I reached for the microphone next. I said, âAs far as reading your childâs texts or logging into their social media profiles, I would say 99.9% of the time, do not do that.â
Looks of total shock answered me. I actually saw heads jerk back in surprise. Even some of my fellow panelists blinked.
Everyone stared as I explained that going behind a childâs back in such a way severs the bond of trust with the parent. When I said, âThis is the most effective way to ensure that your child never tells you anything,â it was like Iâd delivered a revelation.
Itâs easy to talk about the disconnect between the old and the young, but I donât think Iâd ever been so slapped in the face by the reality of it. It was clear that for most of the parents I spoke to, the idea of such actions as a violation had never occurred to them at all.
It alarms me how quickly adults forget that children are people.
Apparently people are rediscovering this post somehow and I think thatâs pretty cool! Having experienced similar violations of trust in my youth, this is an important issue to me, so I want to add my personal story:
Around age 13, I tried to express to my mother that I thought I might have clinical depression, and she snapped at me ânot to joke about things like that.â I stopped telling my mother when I felt depressed.
Around age 15, I caught my mother reading my diary. She confessed that any time she saw me write in my diary, she would sneak into my room and read it, because I only wrote when I was upset. I stopped keeping a diary.
Around age 18, I had an emotional breakdown while on vacation because I didnât want to go to college. I ended up seeing a therapist for - surprise surprise - depression.
Around age 21, I spoke on this panel with my mother in the audience, and afterwards I mentioned the diary incident to her with respect to this particular Q&A. Her eyes welled up, and she said, âYou know I read those because I was worried you were depressed and going to hurt yourself, right?â
TL;DR: When you invade your childâs privacy, you communicate three things:
You do not respect their rights as an individual.
You do not trust them to navigate problems or seek help on their own.
You probably havenât been listening to them.
Information about almost every issue that you think you have to snoop for can probably be obtained by communicating with and listening to your child.
Part of me is really excited to see that the original post got 200 notes because holy crap 200 notes, and part of me is really saddened that something so negative has resonated with so many people.
Fuck canon

Put $100 in the pocket of a low-income person, and it will circle through the local economy a dozen times in a week.
Put $100 in the pocket of bankers and hedge fund owners, and it gets hoarded away in an offshore bank account.
So tell me what type of "stimulus package" actually stimulates the economy
an extra $20 in someones pocket becomes a trip to the coffee shop before work and they leave a generous tip. Then $20 comes out of the tip jar to buy everyone behind the counter something from the taco truck. Taco guy spends $20 on a ride home at the end of taco time. Cab driver spends $20 on a late dinner on the eay home. Food worker misses the last bus and hires an Uber instead of walking home, spending about $20.
Any economist worth their degree will tell you that 5 people spending the same $20 in a day is $100 worth of economic stimulation.
Meanwhile the rich persons $20 is just another $20 in a fund somewhere and they change nothing about their day, effectively turning that $20 into $0 worth of functional economy.
Info from: accountant friend, whom I speak of rather often.
The mattress CEO interviewed in Robert Reichâs documentary Inequality for All described it as something like âI own pretty much the best bed money can buy. If I double my money, am I going to buy another one? If I eat exactly what I want every day, will doubling my money make me eat twice as much? Of course not, the money ends up stashed away by people I pay to manage it. I literally make more money than I can spend. I used to believe in trickle-down economics, but I can see now that the money isnât going anywhere. The 1% does not power the economy, itâs the middle-class that does. And itâs shrinking.â

So nobody was gonna tell me Lee Pace is bi and Luke Evans is gay huh?
That scene in the third Hobbit film where Thranduil and Bard and Gandalf are all hanging out in a tent? I just had to realize it was a tent of men who love men all by myself huh
stop being funnier than me on my own post
actually, yes, i do think itâs time to stop putting sexism and racism in your high fantasy books
If you can believe in dragons, you can believe in a society where gender and race arenât used as excuses to treat people like shit.
If you want to oppress your fictional masses, find a more creative reason.
so I just cried my way thru tonyâs last episode what the fuck it was actually genuinely very sweet and tender and good???
Uuuuuugh am I going to be able to survive it?! đ
utilising the gift of imagination to hallucinate moments of tenderness between fictional people
FUCKING NASA
Iâm fucking pissing myself. You know how all of Jupiterâs moons are named after his lovers and affairs? Yeah. NASA is sending a craft to check up on Jupiter. You know what the craft is called?
JUNO.
Whoâs Juno?
JUPITERâS WIFE.
NASA IS SENDING JUPITERâS WIFE TO CHECK ON JUPITER AND HIS AFFAIRS AND LOVERS.
FUCKING NASA
Protip: Since itâs inception NASA has been comprised of 75% magnificent bastards and 25% tricky dicks
This is a song ground control used to wake the astronauts with. It is the earliest form of Micspam i can think of. Itâs also the only song to ever be banned by NASA.
NASA invented Micspam.
IS THAT EVEN A FUCKING SONG!?!?!?!?!?!? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! @biavanne !!!!!!!!!
Thatâs not all.
During the apollo missions, They were fairly sure they were gonna die, so NASA gave them all corvettes
Which they proceeded to dragrace around the NASA complex, do burnouts and doughnuts and all kinds of tomfoolery
Then there was the time Al Shepard went to the moon, and it simply wasnât enough.
So he brings a fucking golf club to the moon and plays golf on the moon.
The man had an engineer make him a custom golf club he could hide in his suit, just so he could goof off.
Then there was a time they drew a dick on mars
The boys at NASA sure knew how to have fun on the job.
I love space nerds
I hate the fact that many people think that scientists are dull people with no sense of humor or love for cultural things. I mean look at this. Please stop the prejudices.

One of the funniest things I ever experienced was when I went to go see John Mulaney live, and halfway through a bit about how expensive college in the States is, he looked down at the sleeve of his suit jacket and just. stopped. dead halt, mid sentence.
And after like three seconds, where weâre all trying to figure out the punchline because the story clearly hadnât ended, and John Mulaney quietly says, âHas there been tinfoil on my buttons the whole goddamn show?â
Heâd taken his suit to the drycleaner, and theyâd wrapped the buttons on the sleeves and the coat with tinfoil to protect them, and John Mulaney didnât notice until half-way through his set, and was SO FLABBERGASTED that he never did finish the story about college and instead did five minutes on how stupid it was that his buttons were reflecting the light and he just didnât notice, and in that moment I understood more about John Mulaney as a person than I ever have.
during one of his portland shows, he noticed this like 7 year old girl in the front row and asked her (and her parents) if she âis aware that she is physically here right nowâ or if she was just brought along. turns out her favorite john mulaney bit is the âand Iâm new in townâ bit and that sheâs seen all his stuff. He was so shocked and discomforted by the fact a SEVEN YEAR OLD has seen his shows, that he couldnât get through a bit about donating to charity without interrupting himself at least three times to import good life lessons on this small child, as if that makes up for all the horrible things heâs said that she heard
When I saw him in Ft. Lauderdale, there was a bar in the lobby that people kept leaving to go to. At one point, a guy in the front row just got up and BOOKED IT to get drinks. John Mulaney looked over at a woman who was next to the empty seat and asked, âAre you with him? Whatâs his name?â
She was, in fact, with him, and she did tell him her dateâs name. John Mulaney considered this, looked around, and unplugged his microphone. Leaning in to us, he told us that we were going to trick this guy so fuckin hard. He said, âAt some point during the show, I am going to stop and say, âWell, you guys know what they say here in Ft. Lauderdale,â and then you guys are all going to scream back âWE LOVE MILKSHAKES!â Heâll be so confused.â
He then continued on with the show as normal, the drinks guy returned to his seat, and that was that for quite a long time. We thought he had forgotten about it until, at some point during what I believe was his McDonaldâs drive-thru bit, he shrugged his shoulders and said, âYou guys know what they say here in Ft. LauderdaleâŚâ
Naturally, we erupted with âWE LOVE MILKSHAKESâ and John Mulaney SWUNG around to face the drinks guy and said, âI bet youâre real confused now, huh, JASON?!â
ah so john mulaney is a chaotic neutral cryptid
i saw him last night and there was a good ten minute interlude where a woman told him everything she found wrong with his suit, including that his pants were too high waisted to which he replied âthatâs where my hips areâ and someone in the back shouted âlook at that high waisted man heâs got feminine hips!â and he yelled back âthatâs my joke! iâm offended!!â
full offense but we will rock you by queen is 10000% a gay rights anthem and straight people dont have any rights to the song sorry :/
âBuddy, youâre a young man, hard man Shouting in the street, gonna take on the world someday You got blood on your face, you big disgrace Waving your banner all over the placeâ
like how can u hear that verse and think its a song for hetties idk how much more obvious it can be :/ :/ :/
Y'all big mad in the notes
Actually every song by Queen is a lgbt anthem
Donât Stop Me Now is the bisexual anthem to end all bisexual anthems and you will not change my mind
Heteros are really pressed in the notes keep reblogging this
Emily Vancamp as Sharon Carter in âCaptain America: The Winter Soldierâ
Hereâs an example of what we call a âsoft noâ. Sharon turns down Steveâs offer in a way thatâs meant not to insult him but never actually uses the word ânoâ.
Steve clearly gets the message, though, and importantly offers to leave her alone. Sharonâs comment afterwards gives him an opportunity to try again later, but he doesnât press and respects her rejection of his company even though itâs probably hurt his feelings a bit.
Just in case you ever wonder âWhat would Captain America do?â; there you go.
never do something steve rogers wouldnât do.
Unless itâs jumping out of a plane without a parachute, you probably shouldnât do that
I just have to add - Iâve seen interviews with Marvel people where they say that this scene demonstrates that Capâs awkward with women and doesnât know how to ask women out on a date. And it drives me crazy, because - as the OP says - Steve behaved perfectly here. It was a very charming, nonthreatening offer, and he accepted her rejection with good grace. You canât help but feel that to Hollywood, the fact that she said no means he asked badly - which is exactly how Iâd expect Hollywood to think, namely, the idea that men should keep pressing and pushing women until they say yes
Read this, then read it again.
Humans are awesome
I say things like âIâm not interested in sportsâ I really have to give a caveat to explain I really mean âsportsballâ, those mass media team sporting events that lead to white privilege riots and fill the pockets of millionaires and billionaires. Because this? This is incredible, just the athleticism, what bodies can do, female, male, young or adult, differently abledâŚjust awesome.
^^^^
One of the great things about this video is that, because these feats require different skills, thereâs a diversity of body types. There are people in there who, if you saw them on the street, would âreadâ as less athletic. And yet, all of these bodies are able to perform incredible acts.
Reblogging again because this is the most inspirational video Iâve ever seen

Sometimes I just ignore anon hate because theres a proverb I learnt in a Nigerian movie that said. âYou cannot run naked after a mad man in the street after he has taken your clothes away from you because the public will not know who is the mad person between the two of youâ
I feel like this proverb was based on firsthand experience.
Kevin Bridges: A Whole Different Story
âŚwhereâs the lie?
This is a legitimate theory on how to improve the economy of any country. Seriously, give money to people, lots of poor people, and watch them spend it. Every thing they spend it on comes with sales tax, and it helps businesses, who pay corporate taxes, and the government makes money back. Repeat. A lot. But you have to ditch the moral outrage against handouts to poor people. And thatâs the sticking point in the US and the UK and probably lots of other places too.
