universal dashboard of mourning
Her death came after Parton suddenly announced in May 2026 that she was canceling a Las Vegas show and said she’d been undergoing treatment
During her more than 60-year career, Parton sold more than 100 million records and won 11 Grammy Awards, making her one of the best-selling musical performers of all time.
[...] Parton was also a shrewd businesswoman who amassed an estimated $650 million fortune and maintained creative control in the cutthroat and male-dominated music industry. She presided over an entertainment empire that included the Dollywood theme park. And she was a devoted philanthropist who launched the Dollywood Foundation to provide poverty relief and fund educational programs in her native East Tennessee.
It's a long retrospective of her life, more than I can really quote here.
In elementary school, my best friend and I had this game we would play where we were school supplies living inside a child's desk and going on slice-of-life adventures inside it. And I remember that a key component of our school supply society was a sort of religious schism that existed around the purpose and nature of the giant hand that occasionally reached in to grab different citizens, use them, and then return them, because most school supplies considered this an auspicious and enviable moment of being selected for a greater purpose and allowed a glimpse of a vast truth, but pencils considered it a horrible portent of doom because they always got sharpened during it and came back smaller and closer to death. We were third graders btw.

it's been very interesting to me (see: maddening) the way that we're now officially about 20 years, that's two decades, separated from the height of "scene" fashion, its height in the Myspace era, etc., and now I have repeatedly been subjected to nostalgia posts across different social media about the way scene fashion "dismantled gender norms" and "rejected patriarchy" and I feel crazy because I was not only there, but I was a teenage girl who was there and often hanging out in/among the hugely popular/famous aspects of the era that people have become so nostalgic about, and I cannot stress enough that it was as a "scene girl" among "scene men" that I experienced the most violent misogyny I have ever encountered in my life.
Yes, of course there is nuance to it. Of course mainstream masculinity rejected and mocked men in the scene for wearing makeup and skinny jeans.
However, I think there is a mistake being made in believing "scene fashion rejected mainstream gender norms and patriarchy"
when in fact it was that mainstream gender norms and patriarchy rejected scene fashion.
And unfortunately, in response, many many maaany straight men experiencing that rejection, being called homophobic slurs, being told they no longer qualified as men or masculine, did not ban together with women and girls and queer people.
in fact they said, "hey! we're not f*gs! how could we be gay when we're subjecting women and preteen girls within our counterculture to misogyny and sexual violence the likes of which you wouldn't even imagine? you'd be impressed, even. and that's just the start. wait until we tell you what we do to the actual queer people you're accusing us of being."
like genuinely it is impossible to exaggerate the depravity from your average guy in pink skinny jeans i experienced as a scene girl ages 12-17. i've mostly stopped talking about it because it's genuinely just so deeply unpleasant i don't like subjecting people to it.
and most importantly this was a very common experience among all of marginalized people i knew in that scene.
i think it's worthwhile to discuss the counterculture and the people who really were countering culture in that scene/era, but we also need to be realistic and not pretend that idk. the average cobra starship or 3Oh!3 fan was championing feminism.
We agreed we all change. Better or worse, we change together.
As U.S. federal research budgets continue to be slashed, a team of marmot researchers have turned to unconventional sources of funding.
A team of UCLA scientists has resorted to posting content on OnlyFans to raise money for research amid huge federal funding cuts to U.S. science. But the videos aren't of themselves, they're exclusive recordings of marmots. "I spend a lot of time waiting for marmots to do things and had the idea one slow morning," Daniel Blumstein, a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UCLA, who leads the project, told Live Science in an email. "When I came back with this idea, one of my graduate students immediately said we MUST do this! So here we are!" On June 17, the RMBL Marmot Project announced on Instagram that "the state of funding is so bad we are turning to OnlyFans, or as we like to call it 'OnlyMarms'."

just watched a star trek episode about a planet that relied so heavily on it's computer system that they all forgot the basics of their own knowledge. and that allowed them to miss the fact that they were being posioned with radiation and nearly ending their civilization. because they couldn't use their own knowledge to figure things out. i bring this up for no reason in particular
The strongest guy in the Magnus Archives is that one guy who was so obsessed with his dog that he just walked right out of the Spiral because it was her dinnertime
This is one of my favorite episodes. Fears can't hurt you if you're chill enough. The guy who walked in a spiral for four hours and then just left because he remembered he had somewhere to be is, to me, the avatar of the entities' fear
strongest people in the magnus archives:
guy who kept the coffin of the buried in his living room and used it as a coffee table
walked out of the spiral because his dog needed dinner
the plumber who was so inattentive that the stranger put on a whole spectacle for him and he straight-up missed it all
the guy whose primary concern with the evil taxidermists was whether or not they were money laundering (they weren't)
AND he didn’t even realize evil taxidermy was at play for the longest time because he came in like “I love and respect autistic people, of course I’m not judging eye contact”
we CANNOT forget the woman that was actively being swallowed by the buried and when there was nothing she could possibly do she lied down on the ground and accepted her fate so thoroughly and with such calm that it had to barf her back up.
And if my memory is correct she KEPT TAKING THE UNDERGROUND TO WORK
