No but guys, GUYS, we need to talk about how important this scene is.Ā Because the commonly accepted lore about unicorns is that they are so good and pure that theyāll only appear to young virginal girls.Ā Because Molly Grue is a middle-aged woman who has been living with bandits for most of her life and is as far from innocent and virginal as youāre likely to get.Ā Because sheās so angry that this creature, embodying everything that society tells her sheās lost, everything sheās thrown away through her own choices, is here now when all that The Unicorn represents is long since behind her.Ā Because she knows, in a way that only someone whoās been steeped in an oppressive system her entire life can ever know, that sheās missed her chance and doesnāt deserve to be seeing a unicorn now.
And you know what?Ā The Unicorn doesnāt give two fucks about her virginity, about her supposed loss of innocence and purity.Ā Sheās not repelled by Molly being older, being experienced, being a full human person.Ā None of that has ever mattered to unicorns, only to the people telling stories about them.Ā Not only does she step in to physically comfort her here, but before long this banditās wife becomes her friend, closer to her in most ways than Schmendrick.
This story is fucking revolutionary, you guys, and I just have a lot of feelings about it.
I heard Peter S. Beagle speak about this scene at a convention once. He said he just kept writing and writing into the scene and suddenly here was this powerful, moving dialogue which came out very strong and natural, flowing directly from inspiration.
He said it was one of those moments when āthe writer just gets really lucky.āĀ
This is one of those scenes you nebulously get when youāre ten and comes up and punches you in the face when youāre thirty.
i think we as modern humans have a tendency to forget that historical people were also humans who had thoughts and feelings and dreams just like we do
bear in mind that i'm mostly interested in medieval english history, but... do you really think that all women suffered miserable, joyless lives? that no man ever loved his wife? that no gay person ever lived in peace? that no child ever grew up to live a life they loved? that no parent ever saw their disabled child and cared for them anyway? that nobody ever had sex, and enjoyed it? that no priest was ever truly virtous, that nunneries were always places where women were sent away to be locked up? do you really think that it was just suffering day in, day out, unless you were the richest of the rich? do you really think that simply living in a different time made people stupid, senseless, violent? do you really think that people living in the past were so different from us, that they never had thoughts and feelings and dreams to rival our own?
do you really think that people in the past were not people?
I think part of the problem is that a lot of poly discourse revolves around making sure no one in the primary relationship is getting hurt by their partner dating other people, and trying to legislate away jealousy through these boundaries that are supposed to protect the relationship. But very few people think about how in poly dynamics, the people in "the couple" have the power. There's still the underlying mono-normative belief that it's the secondary partners that are a constant threat to the primary couple and need to be enclosed in these boundaries to keep the primary couple safe. But in reality, the couple is the one with all the power, including the power to hurt others. Your partner's other partners are not a threat to you, that's a monogamous construct, and you're still buying into it if your boundaries are around protecting you from that external threat. The only threats to your relationship are those on the inside of your relationship.

"Indeed, when he applied to become an astronaut, he failed on the first attempt. Part of the test featured the famous Rorschach ink-blots psychiatric exam. āI leafed through a whole series of them, and then the last one was a blank sheet of paper, pure white, eight by 10,ā he once recalled. āI was asked what I could see. And I said, āWell, of course, thatās 11 polar bears fornicating in a snow bank.ā And I could see the examinerās eyes kind of tighten. He didnāt think that was funny.ā"
This is one of my favorite posts because that catās fucking name is fucking meatloaf
Let us just appreciate that this personās dad didnāt know when they would be home and so he couldnāt plan for them to be able to join the family for dinner, but he knew with no doubts that dear sweet Meatloaf staying in that exact position for hours was an absolute in this scenario. Truly, that cat was named well.
one of my favorite posts on tumblr over the course of 5 fucking years.. clearly i need a life
Meatloaf is a reliable cat and did not steal the money for selfish reasons. A rare friend.

Fun history facts: One of the 31 people arrested at Stonewall on June 28th 1969 was American folk singer Dave Van Ronk, who was not at the Stonewall Inn at the time and was cis & straight as far as I'm aware. He'd been eating dinner at a nearby restaurant when he noticed a riot happening, said "Well I suppose I should go see what the fuss is about," stepped outside, and immediately started throwing bricks at the cops.
Folk singers will fuck you up, man. They have like no fucking chill.
