If you want to study ancient history (letβs say 300 CE on down), start learning French and German yesterday. And when youβve done that, get comfortable with academic French and German from the 18th c through present.

After fielding some questions in the comments, I want to expand on this.
If you study an ancient field at an advanced level (MA+), your knowledge of the field is a given. Whatβs important is your knowledge of the literature; in history this is called the historiography. Advanced work in these fields is about knowledge; demonstrating your ability to understand how your fieldβs knowledge was built, how it was constructed, is absolutely vital to your success as an academic. This is why scholars keep very outdated but foundational works in print: because itβs part of the history of their field, and part of the foundation upon which their branch of study is built.
For very ancient history, a lot of that foundational scholarship was carried out by French and German individuals, or by individuals working in those languages. No matter how messy and shadowed by imperialism that scholarship is, it still forms the foundation of the field. That foundation has been gutted and replaced and few times, but serious scholars still have to know it.
Moreover, PhD students will not pass their oral exams/comps if they donβt have a detailed, intimate understanding of that scholarship.
Because youβre not just training to know history; youβre training to know the field.
And this is not even addressing the fact that youβll have to master some combination of: ancient Hebrew, Phoenician, neo-Babylonian, Aramaic, Sumerian, Akkadian, Latin, Ancient Greek, Egyptian hieroglyphics and so many more. And youβll have to be able to work with the nuances with those languages as they change over time. English changed radically between 500 and 1600; and those ancient languages shifted just as radically over time.
The French and German is just for command of the field. The rest is for your ability to work with the primary sources. Now go learn cuneiform.

Iβm sorry I was mean and I edited that first tag a little π But yeah, a surprising amount of work in the Maya area is done by Japanese scholars! The Spanish meanwhile is self-evident however haha, a lot of the modern and historical writing on the ancient past in Latin America is in Spanish. 16th-17th century Spanish if you want the conquistadoresβ and colonized subjectsβ primary sources, and 16th-century Nahuatl if you want the Aztecsβ in particular. And reading Maya hieroglyphs is its own epigraphic field for sure!
I do North American archaeology so I am not an expert in any of these but I am adjacent and extremely impressed with my Mesoamericanist colleagues haha. (And also extremely impressed by my Mediterraneanist and Classicist colleagues who do go through the French German Latin and Ancient Greek gauntlet)

Do your colleagues also need to master Portuguese, or is that less impactful than Spanish?
Admittedly the only people I know working in South America are working in Peru and Chile, both of which have produced a lot of archaeologists of their own in recent decades, so Portuguese has just not been nearly as relevant. I donβt know much about Brazilian archaeology at all unfortunatelyβ¦ South American archaeological scholarship has SUCH an Andean bias.
