Is slay the princess any good? I’m considering buying it but I’m still hesitant
(i forgot my inbox is open lol) i recommend it! it’s a very interesting meta narrative about the roles in which the leads play. it’s somewhat generic to compare a video game to twin peaks but the way the return examines laura’s role in the narrative and dale’s want to do good causing her more suffering is my best comparison (outside of king’s later half meta analysis of his own work in dark tower or ryukishi07’s when they cry series.)
meta narratives about storytelling can falter in their scope and the creative’s knowledge on what they’re commenting on but i think slay the princess really sticks its landing; its a love story, its a commentary on agency and free will, its a breakdown in how stories are by their nature time loops due to how we keep repeating them. if you like meta narratives and time loop stories, i’d say give it a shot :^)
i do wonder how much of the need to reduce misery as a text to a critique of fan culture exclusively is the inability to actively engage with a narrative about addiction that doesn’t treat an addiction as a moral failing but rather being trapped. fan devotion and hatred of the creative is the surface dressing to explore how addiction both loves and hates you as the addict. it’s addiction as a form of idol worship, paul describes annie as akin to a goddess even when she’s dead. his mind digs her up, you can’t kill the goddess. addiction even when you’re clean still lingers. he worships her just as much as she worships him as the creator of misery chastain.
annie is far more interesting when you accept that she is a metaphor for cocaine; she’s a nurse and an angel of death because addiction can feel good and self soothe while actively killing you and maiming your body. she’s addiction personified as the obsessive fan. her being an addiction metaphor is so integral to her character and i just don’t believe you can leave it out when you talk about her.
everyone has an annie wilkes - jason sechrest for cemetary dance’s what i learned from stephen king series

my partner describing collie parker the long walk as bit blunt but he had his head on straight is the most teacher thing he’s ever said to me like the parent teacher interview speech JUMPED out but also he is! he’s a bit blunt but he’s a good kid!
i’m the you should watch/read this in my relationship and it is really fun seeing my partner react to books/films/tv because i got him to read the long walk and he knew the film changed the ending and i didn’t explain to him how and i got back messages like this while playing 70s sci-fi ttrpgs
he was so eager to get to the end and then told me he wish he wasn’t and put the book down after mcvries died. pour one out for witchsteriapartner, he related to stebbins too hard and saw him drop dead twice
my partner’s current king ranking based on what i’ve recommend to him (the long walk he read for me, i usually try and tailor my recommendations for people so i lean towards giving him king’s more psychological horror works)
1.) the mist, 2.) 1922, 3.) misery, 4.) the long walk, 5.) pet semetary
witchsteriapartner’s two top having adaptations that star thomas jane is fun especially because he’s a little face blind with actors so when we watched the adaptation of 1922 i told him and he was so shocked. the mist has been his favourite film for years. i think he’d really enjoy shirley jackson, i’m planning on lending my copy of red dragon because he’s a big hannibal fanboy
