Radio Production

GK Media are running a Radio Programme Production Course for TY Students based on the FETAC Level 5 module. The course includes 10hrs Studio time in Flirt FM, which can be spread out over a semester. The workshops cover the areas of engineering, research, on-air presenting, and producing. Students will get to record a group showreel featuring different elements of a radio show. They will also script their own program and select the music.

  Film & TV

With over 13 years experience in the Film & TV industry, GK Media is delighted to continue its Film & TV Workshops for TY Students. The layout of the course includes scriptwriting, storyboarding, camera & sound operation, editing, and other essential areas in filmmaking. Students will get to record an in-camera edit and/or a short film. Last year's TY Short Films produced by GK Media made it through to both the Junior & Senior National Finals of the Fresh Film Festival, where we worked with TY students in Galway, Mayo and Sligo.

It also covers the areas of voice projection, intonation, presentation style, posture, and pitch for aspiring TV Presenters. TALK & FILM:

The Life & Times of Commander Bill King (Monday August 25th 7:30pm)

Join us for a FREE night of Talk & Film in Oranmore Castle on August 25th 2014 when Irish filmmaker Garry Kelly discusses the Life and Times of Commander Bill King.

In 2012 at the age of 102 years old, Commander Bill King of Oranmore Castle passed away. He was the last surviving submarine commander of the Second World War and an adventurer who single-handedly sailed around the world aboard the Galway Blazer II. Back in 1998, Garry Kelly (GK Media/DIG Productions) started interviewing Bill about his life and many adventures. As part of Heritage Week, for one special evening only, Garry will discuss the days spent filming Commander King in Oranmore Castle and screen footage of Bill on board the HMS Snapper in 1940, footage of Galway Blazer II been launched in 1968, and 35minutes of video interviews recorded with him in 2001.

Light refreshments will be served afterwards. Parking is available in the town, which is a short walking distance from the castle.

This event is FREE and is being held in partnership with the Heritage Office Galway County Council.

GK Media are running a series of summer camps in both Radio Production and Digital Video Production, for teenagers (aged 12-16yrs), over the coming months in Galway City.

The Radio Production Course will be a special week-long course for a limited group of teenagers, starting Monday June 30th. The workshops will cover the areas of engineering, research, on-air presenting, and producing. Participants will get to record a group showreel featuring different elements of a radio show produced by themselves such as music shows, news reports, & adverts. They will script their own program and also choose the music.

The Galway-based multimedia company, which was founded last year by producer Garry Kelly, will also run a series of two week courses in Digital Video Production, starting Monday July 14th & Monday August 11th. This course covers the areas of scriptwriting, storyboarding, camera & sound operation, editing, and other essential areas in filmmaking. Participants will get to record an in-camera edit and a short film, which will be screened exclusively at the Eye Cinema on the last day of the course. They will also be treated to a trip to the Eye Cinema to watch one of this summer's top movies (which is all included in the course fee).

Galway City Museum have also partnered up with GK Media to run a summer camp on Creative Filmmaking. The 5-day film course helps participants  produce a short documentary about the history of Galway. The group will develop their communications skills, build their confidence, strengthen their means of self-expression, embrace their local history, and gain invaluable knowledge about the film industry whilst having fun. This course starts on Tuesday August 05th and is expected to quickly fill due to its subsidized fee by the museum.

Over the past several months, Galway City Museum has been running a Thursday evening lecture series relating to the history and heritage of Galway. These fascinating and engaging talks by specialists in their fields covered topics as diverse as Galway slave traders in the Caribbean by Dr. Orla Power, TCD, traditional boat songs of the west coast by Dr. Ríonach Uí Ógain, Director of the National Folklore Collection, UCD, and the Galway writings of John Millington Synge by Prof. Patrick Lonergan, NUI, Galway. A selection of these popular talks were recorded as podcasts by GK Media and are now being made available to listen to or for download, free of charge, on iTunes.

Brendan McGowan, Education & Outreach Officer, says "our evening lectures have proven very, very popular so we decided that, as we can only accommodate so many at the talks, it would be a good idea to record a selection for posterity and make them available to an infinitely larger audience via the world wide web. Ten questions to ask yourself after finishing your script:

(1) Is my story clear? We always encourage writers to get someone they trust to read their script. It is important to get feedback, and although the story might make sense in your head, it's important the reader has the same understanding.

(2) Who is my main character and what does she or he want? Again, clarity is important when it comes to storytelling, otherwise the process is quite often pointless. This tip is mainly concerned with writers who start writing their script straightaway without fully brainstorming their ideas, forming their acts, or writing a treatment. As a result, the focus on characters tends to 'drift' with no one character dominating the story.

(3) Is the main character's goal achievable within the time frame? Sometimes new writers find it difficult to decide if their story would work better in a short film, feature film, or a TV series. There are certain golden rules you need to incorporate which will help you easily solve such a dilemma but basically a short film is often a 'moment' in someone's life, a feature is more of a 'journey' where something happens and our protagonist must change in order to overcome a massive obstacle, whilst a TV series is based on a number of characters who generally remain the same week after week but the 'situations' that affect them keep changing.

(4) Is the main character capable of following through with his or her goal? Our main character may be weak but there is no point having them incapable of achieving their goal or having some sort of resolution. For instance if Rocky got beaten every time he goes in the boxing ring, it would be very hard to sustain the audiences' attention and make a string of Rocky movies.

(5) What is the conflict/what are the obstacles? Conflict or plot hurdles are essential in storytelling as they make the journey interesting. Life is hard so we - the audience - want to see our Hero jump through hoops too. Always throw a difficult situation at your character. How they solve them reveals more about them. The conflict cannot be sustained if the character is not relentless in the pursuit of his or her goal. Likewise the antagonist must be a suitable adversary up to the challenge. What the conflict is must be very clear in your story.

(6) What does it mean to them? Again, unless this conflict is seen as the ultimate battle for our hero and to not overcome this hurdle would be the ultimate loss, than the whole tension and excitement of the story is lost. This obstacle they face must mean everything to them.

(7) Will my audience care, if so why? It's so important to write good, strong characters as you want/need your audience to care about them. The more detailed and complex they are, in other words the more human-like or three-dimensional they are, the more the audience will invest their emotions in them. We always encourage our writers to draw up detailed biographies of all of their main characters. 90% of this information may never be written in the script, but their profiles are very clear in the writer's head and their individualism and personalities will shine through.

(8) What do I want to say about this theme? One of the disappointing elements in reading new scripts is you can see how heavily influenced the writers have been by mainstream culture. Nowadays I can read a pilot script for a Television Show and figure out within the first ten pages which TV shows heavily influenced the writer to put this script together. To be a great writer you need to have something to say. We have come across so many writers who have written stories based in America, yet none of them have ever traveled to America. Their only knowledge of the country is by watching it on television. To put it simply, write about what you know. Write about your own world. It may not be interesting to you, but we don't live in your shoes so it may be quite interesting to us.

(9) Does each scene expand the story? Make sure every scene has a purpose and moves the story forward. With scriptwriting it's not like novel writing - Crisp, Lean and Economical writing is best. If the scene doesn't have a purpose - delete it!

(10) Do I resolve the character's story at the end? This is what Act Three is all about. It is expected to bring the story to a 'climax' and ultimately a resolution to give the audience the pay-off. It is usually the triumph of good (Protagonist) over evil (Antagonist), with rare exceptions. You may wish to leave the storyline 'open' for a possible sequel but at the same time the next script should be a different story so it's good to bring this one to a satisfying conclusion. You may wish to bend the rules, but before you break or bend them you first need to know them. You may wish to get a big reaction from your audience with a twist at the end and that is fine but it's another issue disappointing your audience and making them feel that the time they invested in your story was ultimately fruitless.

Don't forget the key to being a successful writer is ... writing, rewriting, and more rewriting.

Part-Time Radio Production Course at Galway Technical Institute

The course runs over 9 weeks (commencing January 13th) covering the areas of engineering, scripting, editing, and producing radio shows. Participants will learn the style of different radio formats and get to record a full professional Radio Programme.

Course Outline:

Film, TV & Radio Producer Garry Kelly (GK Media) will be the course tutor.

Over the past 7 years Garry has worked in both national and local radio and is a well-known voice on Galway Bay FM, where he has worked as a Presenter, Engineer and Producer.

Back in 2010 he founded ORGANICS Music which was a monthly FREE 60min podcast available via iTunes which featured a collection of songs by contemporary Irish musicians both signed & unsigned. The podcasts reached over 65,000 global downloads that year. He has also interviewed many famous personalities down through the years including Mumford & Sons, Imelda May, Michael Fassbender, Jeremy Irons, Anjelica Huston, Jessica Lange, Peter O' Toole, and many others.

With the emergence of more diverse radio stations in Ireland over the past few years and the growth of online digital radio, there are more opportunities than ever before for aspiring broadcasters. Over the 09 weeks Garry will teach the roles and functions of different radio programmes, the technical requirements, and the tools in researching, presenting, editing & producing a show. You will also get to visit a radio station and be given a basic understanding of how to operate the equipment.

The average age for watching a Viral Video is now 27 years of age. If your target audience are aged 18-34 years of age, then it’s extremely important that you consider including Viral Videos in your internet marketing strategy.

One thing you also need to consider when drafting up your ideas for your online video is that women account for nearly 57% of viral video views, and share these videos 30% more than men.

So what makes an Online Video become a Viral Video? Well it’s simply all about making a statement that’s worth sharing. People love to watch funny amusing clips online or something that pulls at the heartstrings. However unless you’re a charity or raising funds for a serious condition, my advice is to keep your viral video upbeat, dynamic and fun! You need your business to stand out from your competitors.

Here’s our Top 10 Tips to consider for your Viral Videos:

(1) ENTERTAIN: Be creative with a funny, and upbeat video. Perceive it from your customers point-of-view. What would make them hit ‘share’? Remember Viral Videos are another form of storytelling done in an advertising manner.

(2) CLARITY: Decide what message you clearly want to give in your video. If you don’t know, then the viewer certainly won’t know. Trying to be quirky by having an abstract message may be detrimental, costly and a wasteful experience in the end.

(3) DURATION: Decide what length best suits your message -less than 30secs or more than 60secs. Viral Videos that are under 30 seconds or over 60 seconds are more effective and hold your audience longer, than videos trying to meet the 30-60 second time frame.

(4) PROFESSIONALISM: If you run a professional business and you want your business to look professional, then you have to commission a Professional Film Crew to produce your video. A cheap video will make your business look cheap.

(5) PREPARATION: Planning your video is key. A good Video Production company will sit down with you and discuss what exactly you want to promote and help you plan out the best way of doing that step-by-step. Don’t leave all the creative control in the hands of them. You know your business and customers better than anyone.

(8) C.T.A.: There is no point doing a Viral Video unless you have a call-to-action at the end. You need to treat the video as a gateway towards your business. Attract them to your website or a social media account by attracting them with a special offer.

(9) SEED: The first 48 hours of getting a video to go viral are vital. Post it on Facebook and Twitter after 10pm at the start of the week on a Monday night, More people surf social media at this time compared to any other part of the day. Also get your friends and family to share your video and include in their blogs. Everyone wants to be part of what’s happening now so the more who see it in the first couple of days, the more positive reaction you will get from the public.

(10) ADVERTISE: Don’t be afraid to promote your video through paid-adverts with companies like Facebook. You are promoting an online advertising tool, so compliment it with other advertising tools to attract more viewers and drive further traffic to your website. You can control your spend and limit your budget so you’ve no excuses. Make sure you analyze the stats provided during your promotion so you can see exactly who is clicking and sharing.

Don’t forget that Facebook is a great social platform for promoting your Viral Video as it dominates 76% of the market when sharing, compared to emails (15%) and Twitter (9%). So go on, get your message out there now!

Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games - a competition that could change Panem forever.

Quirky Facts: The film has grossed over 150 million dollars in it's opening weekend in the US. For any fashion lovers, most of the dresses Elizabeth Banks wears in this movie are created by the famous designer Alexander McQueen.

Gravity (12A) Sci-Fi/Thriller

Cast: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney

Synopsis: Dr. Ryan Stone is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone - tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness.

Quirky Facts: Gravity has grossed over a quarter of a billion dollars in the US now. The film was 4 years in development, with most of the delay due to technology not at an advanced enough stage to make the movie. To prepare for shooting, Sandra Bullock spent six months in physical training.

Saving Mr. Banks (PG) –Drama/Biopic

Cast: Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson, Colin Farrell, Ruth Wilson

Synopsis: When Walt Disney's daughters begged him to make a movie of their favourite book Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers, he made them a promise that he didn't realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights to turn the story into a movie, Walt comes up against an uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine.

Quirky Facts: Walt Disney first attempted to purchase the film rights to Mary Poppins from P.L. Travers as early as 1938, but was refused. He didn't get the rights until 1961 and the film was released in 1964. Saving Mr Banks is the first theatrical film from Walt Disney Pictures or any other film studio in Hollywood to feature Walt Disney as a lead or supporting character in a feature film.

Carrie (16) - Horror

Cast: Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer, Ansel Elgort

Synopsis: Based on the Stephen King novel, Carrie White is a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother, who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.

Quirky Facts: This is the first screen adaptation where Carrie is played by an actual teenager. Chloë Grace Moretz was 15 during filming, whereas Sissy Spacek and Angela Bettis, who played the role in 1976 and 2002 respectively, were 26 and 28 when they played Carrie. The film was originally supposed to be released in March of this year, but switched to October instead and has already grossed more money than the 1976 film from director Brian DePalma.

The Butler (12A)Historical Drama

Cast: Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, John Cusack

Synopsis: Cecil Gaines was a sharecropper's son who grew up in the 1920s as a domestic servant for a white family. Eventually striking out on his own, Cecil becomes a hotel valet of such efficiency and discreteness in the 1950s that he becomes a butler in the White House itself serving eight US Presidents.

Quirky Facts: The film  has already grossed over 115 million dollars - 4 times its budget. There are 41 credited producers, probably a world record for a single film. In the original script, the character Cecil Gaines has a scene where he meets President Barack Obama. The director Lee Daniels considered asking the president to play himself but since the film was shot during the height of the 2012 presidential election, the director decided to cast an actor instead to play the role.

Philomena (12A) Drama

Cast: Steve Coogan, Judi Dench, Cathy Belton

Synopsis: Based on a true story, the film focuses on the efforts of Philomena Lee, a woman sent to the Magdalene Laundries at a young age after conceiving a child out of wedlock. After 50 years she goes in search of her son who was forced up for adoption, with the help of a disgraced journalist.

Quirky Facts: The film is based on the book The Lost Child of Philomena Lee by Martin Sixsmith, which focuses more on the life of Michael/Anthony after his adoption. However the film won Best Screenplay at the Venice Film Festival.

Taylor Swift was named Artist of the Year at the 2013 American Music Awards which were held Sunday November 24th at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles The singer picked up FOUR prizes. Justin Timberlake won three awards - including best R-and-B and Soul album. One Direction, who sang a stripped down version of their song "Story of My Life," ended the evening with 2 trophies.
