this is true and all. but also never stop talking about your ship because if itâs what makes you happy then you can and should talk about it for yourself and your own enjoyment too.
thereâs nothing wrong with the tweet in the screenshot, but I feel like weâve forgotten that shipping and fandom are first and foremost for ourselves and our own enjoyment, not if the ship is popular or if thereâre enough people shipping it.
just have fun. fandom and shipping is about yourself and your own enjoyment.

I donât think we talk enough about how, despite the presence of multiple globes, PotC takes place on a flat earth, ice wall included.
I'm gonna need some elaboration here
They literally sail over the edge of it after passing through a hole in a wall of ice. They fall off. They get back to the other side by passing through the whole ocean.
But also thereâs a globe on, like, everyoneâs desk.
#it's like lord of the rings#it's only flat for pirates
You get it.
No, but this is actually (sort of) canon.
See, part of the conceit of the PotC trilogy is that all myths are true. Nearly every supernatural element in the franchise has a root in some real world mythology or pirate lore, although some of them are mashed together.
Another thing is that they take place at the end of the Golden Age of Piracy, and the more the map gets filled in, and the more the Royal Navy takes power, there less room there is for the mystical and supernatural in the world. This is explicitly called out in At World's End with the death of the kraken:
Barbossa: The world used to be a bigger place. Jack: The world's still the same. There's just... less in it.
The only way to access the world of the supernatural is through the supernatural itself. You can only get to the Isla de Muerta with Jack's compass that points to whatever you desire, or if you already know where its is. You need Tia Dalma's map to find the edge of the world. To access the supernatural, you need to already be immersed in it.
The pirates world isn't flat, it's round - but because the edge of the world exists in myth, it therefore exists in reality. The pirates are able to find it through supernatural means, but if, say, someone like Norrington just sailed in the same general direction, he wouldn't end up in the same place.
âPirateâ is a mage subclass fueled by word of mouth, rule of cool, The Power of Belief/Love/Friendship, and rum.
If you look at it in a particular way, the Pirates specifically function by FAIRY RULES: obscure codes of law and formality that they are irrevocably bound to abide by...except when you get the wording wrong.
When we go to Tortuga (or any pirate controlled space) we leave behind the sensibilities of the real world and enter this bizarre perpetual revel of debauchery and violence that could never sustain itself in a world bound by sense.
That makes Jack our Puck character, a trickster of tricksters who can invert your fortunes just by letting him talk to you.
It also makes Will into a changeling, born of the fairyworld, adopted by mortals, and fated to return to it in what makes for a doomed love story. Hell, one might say that the reason Will's swords are SO GOOD is because they contain an element of myth about them: they're the IDEA of swords, true to how they would be in myth.
Iâm literally on shift as a nurse at the hospital (but also on my 15 min break #responsibleblogger) rotating a post in my head Iâve been thinking about for a while entitled âOkay But Like IS Marta From Knives Out A Good Nurse??â And i really do hope that post finds its way out of me and onto the page, but christ the mental draft of it is so long. Maybe I can just get away with posting the conclusion: no sheâs not, and yes she is, and also itâs complicated in ways that have almost no real life parallels. Surely no supporting evidence necessary.
Because while there is overlap between the definition of Good Nurse vs Good Person, nursing has a professional code of conduct. Thereâs patient autonomy and safety, thereâs duty of care, thereâs equitable and impartial treatment, etc. So the question is: by the yardstick of our profession is she upholding the standard of care?
By the professional standards of nursing, when she gives the medication without checking the label, she fails at doing a universal safety check that can have catastrophic consequences. Letâs ignore the fact that the meds were maliciously switched (weâll get to that, itâs a real fuckin wrench in everything). The fact is that she should have verified that she had the right medication rather than go by routine. Med error is so so easy in part because passing meds can become so routine. Especially in home health. You lose the fear of fucking up, you donât check something bc youâve done it a hundred times before, oops something goes wrong.
Additionally, she fails to assess her patient. Harlan is not showing any signs of morphine overdose. (I also want to be clear as Iâm saying all this: if I thought I had given someone 100x their morphine dose and then lost the narcan, my asshole would have fallen out so hard you would have heard a clunk when it hit the floor. I like to think I wouldnât let the dramatic old man rope me into an elaborate coverup, but like. He was very convincing. Anywayâ)
Most importantly, she does not admit her error. Every single person in healthcare will make a mistake. If you are lucky, it doesnât cause any harm. If you arenât lucky, you think about what you did for the rest of your life. Sometimes youâre lucky and you still think of what you did for the rest of your life. Whatâs important is not keeping mistakes secret. It doesnât help the patient harmed by the mistake to pretend there isnât a problem or that you donât know what the problem is. And on a larger scale, it doesnât let the system know what happened, how the mistake happened, and what we can do to stop it. Marta doesnât tell anyone what happened, largely in part bc Harlan is fucking wild and so hyped to die dramatically, but still for the point of nursing argument: she conceals her mistake.
And that causes about every problem in the film. Because if sheâd been like âHarlan, this is insane, I am calling an ambulanceâ the med switch up would have been caught because he would have been fine. So much of the situation was out of Martaâs controlâliterally, malicious interference with the medication and hiding the reversal agent, like whatâs she supposed to do about thatâbut after the error happened, she engaged in a cover up.
And the moment in which Marta is a by the books Good Nurse is when she performs CPR and calls 911 to save someone she believes is blackmailing her and is the only person who knows Harlanâs death is her fault. She is providing care to someone in need regardless of her personal situation. She is owning up to what she did to prevent further harm. In a world in which Harlan was dying from a med error, she provides the family closure regarding his traumatic suicide. Being a Good Nurse means owning up to your mistakes, even if it is too late to save the patient, because we canât find ways to address problems we donât know exist.
But like to get back to the murder of it all, her failure to check the medication DID prevent a catastrophic med error. Like yeah she fuckin t gave the right med! She did know it by touch! And on one hand, thatâs kinda bullshit, but on the other hand, I know what dilaudid feels like when I draw it up. I know what Ativan looks like in a syringe. And to be clear I would not give anything on a purely vibes based premise, but with experience you do get a nursing sense thatâs difficult to articulate. Itâs knowing someone has a fever from the doorway of their room, or that someone has a GI bleed from the faint smell of their poop, or that someone is in the early stages of sepsis from a glance at their respirations, or that someoneâs getting delirious from just a passing comment they make. Intuition is not a consistent safety system, and also it is an invaluable asset. Sometimes you just know something isnât right. That cannot be the entire basis of your practice. But it helps!
Marta knew the med was right because sheâd drawn it up a hundred times before. Thatâs horrible safety practices, but also she was right. If sheâd done the med check correctly by verifying the label on the vial, then she would have killed Harlan. So in this sense, ignoring protocol and going by pure intuition resulted in the correct decision in the context of unknown but extraordinary circumstances (Chris Evans). So like. Not sure exactly what the takeaway there is. I think mainly just murder is wrong.
And also just generally speakingâstepping back from the murder of it all once againâHarlan clearly liked her. Marta and Harlan had good therapeutic rapport, by which I mean they enjoyed each otherâs company which was probably Harlanâs chief need. Like medications, treatments, those are all good, but so is talking to patients like theyâre people and making them feel comfortable. I mean, she did that so good she got millions of dollars and a mansion. Girl knocked it out of the park.
So is she a Good Nurse? Iâd say overall yeah. While at times throughout the movie, she is more concerned with being a Good Daughter or a Person Who Isnât In Jail, the overall impression is a compassionate person who is normally competent at her job, tries to save others despite her personal situation, and takes responsibility for her mistakes. I think thatâs why she rings true as a character who is a nurse, even if you could quibble with the exact medical details.
But like. To be clear. 1) Holy shit you should read the labels on your drugs. And 2) do not let a man with a knife throne take charge of your emergency response.
Happy Birthday Squid!
@gaydragonwizards You asked for something featuring Ash and Bianca from our VTMB-based RP stuff, so here's the pair talking about a certain hat Ash was wearing when he first appeared in said RP stuff. :p Enjoy!
--
âPlease tell me youâre going to get rid of this stupid hat.â
Ash blinked, then turned around to see Bianca standing behind him, turning a familiar gray baseball cap around and around in her hands. âI mean, we have so many better ways for you to disguise yourself now that weâve bought you a proper wardrobe,â she continued, giving the hat a glare like she wanted to just chuck it in a fire and be done with it. âWhy hang onto this?â
âBecause itâs my hat,â Ash replied, going over and plucking it out of her hands. âAnd I want to keep it.â
âWhy, though?â Bianca protested, frowning at him. âYou donât even wear it anymore.â
In response, Ash pulled the cap over his head and gave her a cheeky little grin. Biancaâs eyes narrowed. âThat doesnât count, and youâre not funny.â
Ash chuckled. âI had to do it,â he said, taking it off again. He took a moment to examine the worn fabric before looking back up at her. âAnd yes, I know I donât wear it anymore, and yes, I know I have much better âdonât want to be recognized as a former movie-star-slash-club-owner-slash-general-Hollywood-fuckupâ outfits these days, thanks to you and your sisterâs generosity. But...â He shrugged. âThe old thing has sentimental value to me.â
Bianca raised an eyebrow. âSentimental value.â
âYeah! This is the hat that I wore when I first came back to Los Angeles, after all! When I figured it was about time I found Arianna and repaid my debts!â
âThe hat everyone called the worst disguise theyâd ever seen?â Bianca deadpanned.
âYes â though I have to point out that it got me to The Last Round,â Ash retorted, wagging the cap at her. âMaybe because everyone who saw me went âthat canât be Ash Rivers; heâd never wear such a stupid hat.â
Bianca snorted. âOkay, I will give you that. But â you want to keep it because it reminds you of your first night back in Los Angeles? I would have thought youâd want to forget that night. Especially the part when you dived under a table in The Last Round rather than face Isaac.â
âOkay, yes, I would really like to forget that part,â Ash admitted, grimacing in a way that suggested heâd be blushing if he had the ability. Then he shot her a smile that made it very clear why heâd become the mediaâs darling and the fantasy of many a screaming teenage girl in the wake of Negative Zero. âBut I want to remember the part where you and Alice agreed to let me stay at yours. The first time we really, properly met. Because that moment is the whole reason youâre in here, trying to convince me to chuck the hat.â
Biancaâs eyes cut briefly to the floor as it was her turn to look like she wanted to blush. âAh. Okay then.â She raised his gaze back to his lips, smiling. âItâs still a really awful hat, though.â
âIâm not arguing with you on that,â Ash assured her with a chuckle. âBut it can stay shoved on a shelf in the back of my closet, canât it? Just a little token of how all this started?â
Bianca sighed fondly. âAll right,â she allowed. âJust make sure itâs very far back, so my eyes can be spared. And so my Toreador instincts donât eventually get the better of me.â
âHey â if I can survive the clan curse screaming at me that itâs unaesthetic, so can you.â
lmao that hat was so, so stupid, Ash-
this is fantastic, I love it :D
So. Tyr, my dog, is a Great Pyraneese. This is important because this breed is known to be smart. Not in the way a German Shepherd or border Collie is smart, and wanting to please a human; Great Pyrs are independent minded and bred to Be Management of herds when a human might not be around.
Anyway.
It has been very pleasant out. We had the windows cracked and left them cracked when we went to work. This has never been an issue before.
My darling spouse was working on a job in a small town about a mile from our place. He was getting some stuff from the work van when he sees a large white dog prancing along.
"Huh." He thinks. "That looks an awful lot like.....TYR WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING HERE."
Tyr, delighted that she has Found Father, bounds up happily and gets in the work van to give face kisses.
"GIRL NO WHAT." Kev says, scrambling to go let the client know that he has to take the fucking criminal back home real quick.
Turns out she discovered that a window can be shoved open with a determined snoot, and a window screen is not as strong as 80 pounds of muscular dog. And went for an adventure.
I got a call at this point while I was doing payroll.
"BABE WE NEED TO BABY GATE ALL THE FUCKING WINDOWS." My spouse says.
"....okay??" I say, and then get the story. I swore a bunch.
Anyway my dog is a criminal escape artist and we have to baby proof the fucking windows now
My mom thinks this is the funniest thing ever because I, Age 11, discovered I could remove window screens to climb out my window and climb the house roof to stargaze, which nearly gave her a heart attack when she looked out a window when hearing a noise and saw her fucking child squirreling around on the roof.
"Like mother like daughter" she texted me and then about 20 laughing emojis in a row

One thing I will always appreciate Fullmetal Alchemist for is the fact that they let Roy Mustang be complicit in genocide.
Mustang is an Atoner figure. Something that plagues Atoner figures is when writers are too precious about the characters we're meant to like to actually let them be guilty of something serious.
The Atoner might be trying to make amends for their involvement in the Great '87 Hotel Massacre, and then three seasons in you find out what happened. And it's like, "I drove a taxi to the hotel, and the KILLER was in it! I ferried the killer to the hotel! That makes me responsible, and now I must atone for being nearby while the killings took place! And also vanquish the real killer who is the villain for this season."
Or maybe the Atoner did do the killings but they were under mind control the whole time and would never, ever have done it in their right mind.
But FMA said no. Mustang, Hawkeye, Hughes, even Armstrong to an extent though he suffered a breakdown and fled during it. They did that shit. They followed their orders and they did that shit. And it haunts them.
Roy did that shit. And his atonement, his grand ambition, is to see everyone responsible for that shit brought to justice for their crimes. Including himself.
That is how you write an atonement plot.
I know some of y'all have missed my text post nonsense, so here's the glorious return of the silliness!
