We need to go back to using sailing ships full time like immediately. Yes it would take longer to get places but the Aesthetic is unmatched
Like there is nothing sexier hthan this
Canβt wait for OP to get scurvy
Are you under the impression that the ships themselves are what caused scurvy
Once again. Do you think this is the fault of the ships themselves
knowing when to hold em and when to fold em is also important for origami

Hey. Why isnβt the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isnβt that fucked up? Does anyone else think thatβs absurd?
It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! Thatβs a big deal! Iβve never thought about it before but now that I have, itβs ridiculous to me that thatβs not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why donβt we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
Itβs July 20th. Thatβs the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. Iβm ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and Iβm going to have a goddamn potluck. Youβre all invited.
Hey. Hey. Tumblr. Ides of March ppl. We can do this
Hell yeah moon holiday
Ooh coming up we should celebrate
PITCH: We call it Moon Day, and then every 7 years when it falls on a Monday, that's an even BIGGER deal and we call that Moon Day Monday and go absolutely apeshit about it (the next Moon Day Monday is in 2026 so we have a couple trial runs first)
MOON DAY MOON DAY MOON DAY
moon day is 20th July!!!
Scheduling this a day earlier to remind you all and myself about the Moon Day tomorow!
Happy moon day to all who celebrate
This is your reminder to prep for Moon Day on July 20th.
MOON DAY MONDAY THIS MONTH NOT A DRILL!!!!!
TIL that a cat once co-authored a physics paper. In 1975, a physicist had just finished writing a paper and was ready to publish but realized that he had used βweβ instead of βIβ throughout, despite being the sole author. Not wanting to edit the paper, he listed his cat, Chester, as a co-author.
via http://ift.tt/2pvbu4c
This is the cat, by the way:Β
I trust him
Ok but the best part is, physicists loved the joke. When people called the authorβs university and he wasnβt available, theyβd ask to speak with the co-author instead. The author issued a limited number of copies of the article signed by both authors. (Chesterβs was obviously a pawprint.) And to this day, physics papers will often have F.D.C Willard (Felix Domesticus, Chester Williard [Willard was the authorβs fatherβs name]) mentioned in the footnotes thanking hisΒ βuseful contributions to the discussionβ.
if youre in the US (especially the northeast + michigan) i would avoid bagged salads/greens and generally wash your produce very thoroughly unless you want the diarrhea parasite
Michigan is experiencing its largest outbreak of a parasitic infection that causes severe diarrhea. Nearly 1,000 people have been diagnosed
this is not life-threatening, but also who wants weeks of diarrhea and a fucking parasite in them lol. if you suspect you've already had this and it's passed, i would see a doctor. you might need an antiparasitic anyway. if you're actively sick, see a doctor and they might be able to prescribe medication to help you get over it faster.
try to avoid eating raw vegetables, scrub fruit with a produce brush and rinse thoroughly with water. again, don't bother with premade greens or bagged salads. if you buy lettuce, remove the outer 2-3 layers of leaves.
there are UNVERIFIED rumors that the greens have been linked to a company that sources to taco bell. some locations have been actively pulling fresh ingredients like lettuce, avocado, and pico de gallo to mitigate the threat, so i would avoid any products from them just in case. considering how vast supply chains are, i'd be wary of any fast food greens in general for now.
further tips from an immunocompromised person obsessed with food safety:
- wash and then cook your vegetables. air fry, bake, sautee, deep fry, whatever to 165F
- if you really want a salad, get locally farmed veg from the farmers market and wash VERY thoroughly. if the farm has info about their labor practices, even better. workers' safety keeps us safe too
- you can blanch some greens too but this isn't as safe as cooking thoughly
- wash your hands thoroughly before & after prepping raw vegetables
- avoid cross contamination in your kitchen from raw vegetables. act like it's raw chicken

There's a throwaway line on the very first page of the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy: ..."nearly two thousand years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change"...
The first time I read it, at the tender young age of twelve or thirteen, it annoyed me no end. It's facetious, and I didn't dare to be facetious about the Lord back then. Moreover, it only mentions one aspect of Jesus' teachings, the one aspect I was sure everybody agreed about. Everybody hold hands and let's love one another! It's what every religion says! Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Atheist, we can all be nice to each other! I really disliked messages like that, back then. I thought them vapid. I thought they took out all the difficult parts. I was quite certain that there was more to Jesus, that the other parts were the important parts, and that those were the ones he got killed for.
There is more to Jesus than "let's be nice". But "let's be nice" is a lot more explosive than I used to think. A few days ago, I unexpectedly ran into a message of "my political enemies may not follow my blog". I expressed mild confusion at this, and got hit with half a dozen vitriolic comments.
I'm still confused. I really didn't think "be nice to people" was controversial.
Yeah, you've got a point. Although I think there are more mature and nuanced ways of expressing this -- "Blessed are the meek", "Vengeance belongs to the Lord", "Let not the sun go down upon thine anger"...

day 6 / ???
this is really interesting in how it frames disability/low spoons/etc as not being a series of internal symptoms, but specifically a situation in which daily tasks increase in complexity. for example i used to be able to wash the dishes normally. but now mental and physical issues combine to make that situation have a lot of prequalifications (do I have time, energy, how long can I do it without being sore the next day) that means many more steps are involved in getting that single physical act of washing a dish to be done.
Iβm trying to remember the quote. βOn a good day, doing laundry is three steps. On a bad day, the first step is getting out of bed.β
just casually leaving this here for no particular reason
You know what? Fuck it I'm adding more context. Sesame Street has talked about the topic of death more than once and it's done with such gentle carefulness without watering down or censoring the heaviness of the situations. It treats heavy subject matter with respect and dignity and has been for DECADES. From the early 1980s:
To 2025:
Hell, they even cover the devastating heaviness of MASS SHOOTINGS without censoring or watering anything down.
They've been doing this for YEARS, and it's ALWAYS handled with dignity, respect, seriousness, understanding, and love.
Whenever I see people censoring words because it "might offend" someone or the big ad companies that are currently trying to run everything? I just want to say to them: "What? Is Sesame Street too mature for you?" Because really...what the hell are we doing.
Mister Roger's Neighborhood also covered difficult topics with respect, age-appropriately, and without pulling a single punch. It's crazy that we've worked ourselves up so much that we're self-censoring like it's always been the norm.
This clip is from 1968 and discussed assassination after Bobby Kennedy died.
I'm not sure when this clip originally aired, but it was likely sometime in the 1980s. They talk about murder and, incredibly by today's standards, what sort of emotions (anger, fear, loneliness) might drive someone to hurt or kill other people + how we can manage our own difficult or painful feelings.
The ability to talk about hard and awful things
is the ability to process these things.
taking away the words for bad things
means when they HAPPEN- and bad things will still happen around us-
WE CAN'T TALK ABOUT THEM without the WORDS.
When the word is accurate, USE THE WORD. Say Death. Say Murder. Say Rape. Say Prison, say Riots, say War, Say Famines and Disease. Say Bigotry. Say Hate crime. Say Racism. Say Fascism. Say Abuse. Say Hurt. Say Pain. Say Grief. Say Fear.
We must not lose the Truth of what a word means.
All of these things need to be talked about. Do Not GIVE UP YOUR WORDS.
TFW you accidentally come up with your enemies' new theme song.
This comic was so rushed lol. Hope any of you fellow yankees had a happy and safe 4th of July.

Y'know, in much the same way that it's more compelling (most of the time) to see evil characters who are redeemed live and struggle with the consequences rather than self-sacrifice as their first and final redeeming act, I believe it is similarly rewarding to see depressed and self-destructive characters live and struggle with it rather than dying as the final act in their own self-destruction
