It is absolutely worth interrogating the behavior you defend or rationalize in fiction.

If you find yourself arguing things like "this character is justified in hurting people because the character was bullied as a child" or "a benevolent emperor is perferable to representative democracy because we can see the benevolent emperor making the right decisions" or "imperialism is good when the people being taken over have bad morals" it's important to learn how to take a step back and figure out if you actually believe those things.

Do you actually think having been victimized justifies hurting other people? Do you actually think dictatorships are preferable to representative democracies? Do you actually think imperialism is good if the people being taken over have bad morals?

When you are defending the behavior, are you defending it using the same language people use to defend that behavior in real life?
