Fans harassed Dana Terrance for confirming Frankie as a cisgender woman; for Kei Urana, it was because she said she was disinterested in shipping. JJK fans were threatening to harm Gege Akutami for killing off Gojo, and BNHA fans harassed Kohei Horikoshi for making Izuocha canon.

I remember a post where she kinda made fun of fans who wanted Charlie to comfort her father in the season 2 finale after he was injured.

Or another which was a reply under a piece of fanart about Alastor, Lucifer and Vox, where she said it’s her fans who hyper focus on the men and only the men and ignore the female characters.

Case in point, her getting mad at Charlastor shippers who shared fanart on the day of the pilot’s release date, which also happened to be her birthday.

I don’t know if it’s the appropriate term, but it feels very DARVO-y. Like her fans fault for interpreting her work or actions that way.

DARVO has a very specific idea attached to it, so I would not recommend using that term for this situation.

It's more a means of highlighting what Medrano personally values in her fanbase and what she thinks a fanbase is for.

People point out how poorly written the women in Helluva are, she says Helluva is more about the man and Hazbin will for us more on women.

People point out Hazbin actually focuses way more on the interiority, personality, and life of the male characters and she blames fans because she can't do anything wrong.

Fans interpret Stolas as a selfish asshole or Alastor and Charlie having more chemistry than Charlie and Vaggie and she gets upset because she feels like

1) It shows she isn't actually doing a good job writing women (or men for that matter)

2) Her own fans are propagating the fact she can't write women via fanart

3) She feels like she has no control over her show's reception (because she doesn't know how to write or make art)

It isn't DARVO as DARVO is explicitly an abuser turning the accusations of abuse back on the victim.

There are no victims here. There is no abuse taking place from Medrano. This is not a personal relationship Medrano owes anyone, no matter how many times she crosses boundaries with her base or how much someone loves her shows. I don't agree with how she handles her fans, but her fans are not victims of her just because she is kind of a bitch to them sometimes and uses them as scapegoats.

She doesn't owe them anything, fans are fans of the product and if they choose to be fans of her, then they get to be a fan of the whole unflattering package- including how she treats them.

This is just Medrano's ego injury turned into projected blame. I wouldn't call it abuse because she isn't going after individuals as much as she is using them as meat shields from any criticism.

The fact her inner circle of fandom then goes out and acts abusively to fans being fans "wrong" isn't directly Medrano's fault. But it says a whole hell of a lot that those people all make up her closest fans.

Something I find super funny about online and fandom purity culture is how people will use purity to argue why someone can't or shouldn't like something but then when their favorite creator or show doesn't meet those standards, everyone else is actually worse so it's still okay. Like the more people demand something from creators, the more hypocritical those people become.

Yes, Medrano treats her critics like she is Jesus being persecuted. Medrano treats her fans as both a display of her own value and the most unwanted stepchildren. But this is the same woman who can't keep her friendships because she treats her friends like shit, so are we surprised?

If someone has a personal relationship with her, that behavior is really gaslighting and pretty abusive. Fans do not have relationships with creators. They are owed nothing and the relationship is so distant.

Abuse vs Someone being an asshole is defined by the relationship. Relationships require proximity and fans do not have that proximity by virtue of just being fans.

I will go as far to say that some people are already idolizing certian parts of fandom/ some fandoms.

here's the thing, i deadass do not care if it's actually a good film, objectively or subjectively or otherwise.

a lot of people are praising it and probably for good reason! i'm not gonna pretend like Nolan isn't an amazing director / screenwriter when Inception is one of my favorite movies of all time.

but whether or not it's a well-made film is beside the point.

the point is that it was funded by Greece taxpayer dollars and yet couldn't even be bothered to hire Greek actors/actresses. or give a damn about researching and portraying Ancient Greek dialects and clothing and weaponry with any respect or effort.

it's not my responsibility to get angry on behalf of Greek peoples because I am not Greek and so you could argue this is not my circus, not my monkeys. and the last thing I wanna do is speak over Greek voices, of which there are MANY who are sharing their justified disdain for this film.

but I'd like to think I know a little thing or two about cultural appropriation and the harm that Hollywood has done in tokenizing and fetishizing and profiting off other culture's media without ever giving back to the culture that is still alive. Greece is not Atlantis, it's not like it's some long-forgotten city of myth that we can only make assumptions or best guesses about, its land and its people are still here and we're ignoring them in favor of taking the easy way out and hiring Tom Holland and Zendaya and putting them in Spirit Halloween clothing so they can recite a 2026 script that cuts out major elements of the original story and uses modern language, not because it's actually set in modern day, but because clearly the scriptwriters were too lazy or weren't confident that 2026 audiences would be able to appreciate antiquity-stylized language.

and when this movie makes hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office, there's zero guarantee any of it will go back into the Greek economy. at best maybe they'll get a tourism boom from American consumers who only perceive Greece as a movie set akin to Disney World and not an actual country.

this behavior is nothing new. the global south and everything in it - the people, the culture, our heritage - is seen as nothing more than a decoration or commodity to colonizers. i don't even need to bring up the koh i noor or the entire british museum; these examples are recent and egregious enough on their own.
