Wen Kexing primly shuffles to the bow, and just as primly slides his hand into the one Zhou Zishu keeps still raised. Damp fingers sliding over his palm, lake-cold. Zhou Zishu clamps around it on reflex, then makes room for Wen Kexing in the water. He bears his full weight for a delicious two seconds with his single hand and forearm. Wen Kexing glides down, the robes spreading out around him in the lake, seafoam-soft on moss-green, his coral sash trailing over his knees. He tugs his hand out of Zhou Zishu’s, tucks it away. But he does not stop looking at Zhou Zishu, and ducks his head to smile when he thinks Zhou Zishu is not looking. Silly man.

“But A-Xu, this is exactly why I braided your hair.” Without letting himself be distracted by Zhou Zishu’s glare in the mirror, he snatched up the next blossom—a pale violet primrose like clouds at sunrise—and twined the stem into Zhou Zishu’s hair.
