you donât realize how important lunch is until youâre wandering around thinking about how unloveable and untalented and uniquely cursed you are and then itâs 4pm and you finally eat lunch and you go Oh. oh right.
lot of people commenting on this post like "who eats lunch at 4pm that's a terrible time to eat lunch" yes. that is the point. 4pm lunch is inadvisable. 4pm lunch is not the ideal. 4pm lunch makes the mind demons real.
this lamb keeps trying to sacrifice itself even though no one really needs or wants it to do that

I feel like shadowgasts moved on too quickly from the fact that Dairon implies that the metal the volstrucker stabbed Caleb with was likely given to her by the dynasty-empire double agent they were hunting down (Essek)
Episode 77, after the attack and the Nein meet with Dairon:
Saw this from @occidentalavian yesterday and had to respond:
I donât think Essek did it to gain their trust! I think Essek was legitimately trying to get Caleb killed or stage an incident that might undermine the Dynastyâs willingness to consider a peaceful resolution.
Essek previously permitted unhindered access to the captive Scourger, even with the Bright Queen watching. It was episode 74 that Jester (on Calebâs behalf) requested a delay for the execution, and then Essek insisted to Caleb in person that they needed to give advance notice to schedule a time to see her again.
While itâs possible that Matt did that for above-table reasons (Micaâs a guest and maybe they didnât know she was going to join them for more than 1 additional episode), it doesnât seem especially likely. If they were hard pressed for time toward the end of an episode, Matt could have ended it whenever he needed to and they would pick up in the next.
So for in-game reasons, the cinch of it is why would Essek want the Neinâs trust at this point? Theyâre a constant security risk for him. Their investigation of the missing beacons carries enormous risk that he would be exposed as the traitor, and heâs been pressed by the Bright Queen to insist that they carry it out. Allowing them to get to know him is practically inviting scrutiny. I think that instead Essek wanted to be rid of them, and when a dragon didnât eat them, he had an assassination ploy arranged as a backup.
But this is the moment where Essek was standing in ear shot to hear Caleb desperately converse with a Scourger to see if any portion of her regretted what she had done. Essek was there last time and knew that Caleb would speak to her in Zemnian; if he didnât know Zemnian, it would have been easy to come prepared with Comprehend Languages, either as a scroll or his own cast. Even if Essek hadnât arranged the shiv (and I still believe he did), he certainly wanted intel at the very least. I expect that he understood the whole conversation.
âMaybe if I could talk plainly with you and see one inch of change, then I wouldn't believe we're all damned.â
I donât think Essek planned this as a way to gain the Neinâs favor. I think witnessing Calebâs conversation was the moment that Essek began to have a change of heart. I think Essek believed he was as damned as the Scourger, and he hadnât believed there was any other option until he heard Caleb say that.
In the aftermath, Essekâs tone of conversation with the Nein is far less abrasive and curt than earlier in the episode. The next time they offer, he agrees to have dinner with them and tells them about himself. Essek invites Caleb to his home. He helps with the spell for Veth.
He talks plainly with them and tries to change.
I suppose my question now then is, if a dragon didnât kill them, why would he think a prisoner with just a shiv would do the job? Or was there a second part of the plan that he abandoned?
I mean, Calebâs first instinct was to counterspell, which did nothing because she didnât cast. She hit his 15 AC with a melee attack and did 26 points of piercing damage. That would have killed the average NPC, and the only reason it didnât kill Caleb is heâs leveled with hit points.
Narratively, it makes sense to have expected that to kill him. Besides, even if Caleb didnât die, a violent incident like that would be evidence that peace is not a realistic option to end the war.

I was wondering if there was anything you could tell me about cats and taurine/taurine deficiency, or reputable research/resources to look towards? I've been seeing a ton of stuff talking about how a housecat might not be getting enough taurine but it's all from people trying to sell something, which makes me immediately wary of the validity. No pressure, just want to talk to some folks who arent trying to push their products on me with scare tactics
Any commercial cat food with am AAFCO label on it will have sufficient taurine.
Cats are obligate carnivores. A lot of people think this means they can *only* eat meat, but what it really means is that there are certain amino acids they cannot make on their own, and those amino acids are found in meat. They require meat, and in certain amounts, but that doesn't mean they can *only* easy meat and nothing else. These companies are banking on people not understanding this.
This is, however, why cats cannot eat a vegan diet. The only cases of taurine deficiency I've seen was a single indoor-only cat on a vegan diet. Anyone who says their cat did well on a vegan diet is either lying or had a free-roaming cat.
They all have sufficient taurine NOW, because before they put enough taurine in cats would sometimes get a deadly heart disease about it. So it's definitely not an unfounded concern.
It's been sufficient for like, 30+ years. This was a known issue back when I first started my first job at a cat only hospital 26 years ago.

The thing thatâs always missing from the âwomen didnât fight for the right to work they were already working they fought to get paidâ is that many women also very much wanted to work.
Women wanted to be lawyers and engineers and chemists. They wanted to use their brains in challenging and interesting ways. They wanted to get the satisfaction from solving problems and inventing new shit and getting attention for it.
I know not everyone is born with intellectual curiosity or drive or determination but some people are and many of those people are women.
Literally.

Some time ago (I think in 2021) I had to go see a neurologist over really scary symptoms that resembled seizures. I was a nervous wreck about what I was feeling and had barely slept all week, which seemed to be apparent to the docâs assistant when I sat down in the exam room for questioning or whatever. Dude was pretty young and soft spoken, around my age. He was laser focused doing something on one of those tablet-laptop Surface things as I spoke, presumably writing down my symptoms.
Midway through talking about my symptoms my voice audibly started shaking as I was describing them, clearly upset.
In the middle of my monologue he turns the tablet to face me, closes whatever program he has open and the wallpaper is this fucking collage of pictures of lord farquaad from shrek, lovingly decorated. Dude just sat there placidly smiling at me until I noticed and stopped dead in the middle of a sentence. We sat there in silence like this for like a solid minute before I started wheezing laughing. Before I could even say anything else or process it he picked up the tablet and wordlessly left the room, and I just sat there dumbfounded until the doctor showed up. 10/10 doctor experience tbh
I didnât own a cell phone at the time to get a photo so this rendition from memory is all I can provide you
ID: a digital drawing of a man in scrubs sitting on a wheeled stool, serenely smiling with his elbow on a rolling cart, where a tablet is flipped open to show an approximation of the Lord Farquaad screensaver. end ID
