I’ve had people (non-pornbots) try to strike conversation out of nowhere in my DMs recently, and now I’m wondering if they were doing that because they wanted to follow me and thought they needed to interact first. I feel compelled to say, just in case, that it’s totally okay to follow this blog (or my side blog, for that matter) even if we’ve never talked before.

For those who are unaware, there's been ads for a/i chat/bots going around on Tumblr. Specifically for "shapes.inc".

Obviously this is immediately worrying as chat/bots prey on low mental wellbeing, loneliness and someone's desire to interact, to then make them dependant and use their services more.

However, the ads themselves have stopped being quiet about that aspect. Here's one of the most worrying ads (aside the one that legitimately encourages users to make chat/bots of their friends' OCs without their consent, while also trying to claim that its "ethically sourced" - not telling us WHAT'S even sourced here - and therefore "guilt free".)

This is disgusting, plain and simple.

Not only is it directly preying on loneliness outright - it's encouraging a user to make a bot out of someone real without their consent. Not even a friend, no - a MUTUAL. It's encouraging parasocial dependency - just LOOK at what the "OP" is saying here: "RESPOND" "DID YOU DIE?" "PLEASE" "I MISS YOU".

It's not just encouraging parasocial behaviours nor just dependency overall, but encouraging users to breach the others' privacy just so they can pretend they're speaking to them.

Ads like this should not be allowed anywhere. Tumblr needs to get rid of it outright before someone gets hurt.

DO NOT make chatbots of real people just because you "need to talk to them nowwwww"

DO NOT make chatbots of someone else's OC - it's not flattering, it's not your character to 'bring to life'

DO NOT engage with these chatbots AT ALL. They are NOT real people, they are NOT going to combat your loneliness, they're just going to make you addicted to talking to them, and make you feel even more lonely because they will monopolize all your time and energy, so you have none left for actual REAL people who will want to chat.

These things are designed to keep you using them. Keep you talking. Keep you feeding them information and prompts so they'll get better at imitating real people.

Not to mention, making a chatbot of a real person is insanely violating for that person. They have no idea what you're chatting about with it. It could be saying things that they personally would not approve of. This is the next level of "deep fake", and some people may become confused as to what the real person thinks or feels. If the chatbot version seems to be coming onto you and wishing to engage in some kind of relationship, it would be very, very easy for the one chatting with it to confuse that with the actual real person's feelings.

Ever had a dream when you were mad at someone and then woke up still feeling angry at them? Over something dream them did?

Yeah, this is worse.

Do not be drawn in by these things. Please, please do not create a chatbot of one of your mutuals (or someone you wish was a mutual) and then engage in some fabricated conversation where you feel like you're real friends.
