Sonic propped himself up on his elbow as his brow furrowed at the sudden alertness, “Everything alright?”

The kit didn’t respond, his ears flicking this way and that as he surveyed the area. Finally, he slowly turned back to the camera, a somewhat concerned expression on his face, “Sorry, I thought I heard something.”

“‘Something’ as in…?”

“I dunno. It almost sounded like a badnik.” Tails said, still glancing around before mumbling, “But what would a badnik be doing out here…” to himself.

That got the hedgehog to fully sit up, “Shoot. You need me to head over there?”

“Um… I don’t think so? Again, it could be nothing.” Tails said, looking at him fully.

Sonic tapped his fingers against the ground, “Better safe than sorry though, right?”

“Maybe if I notice anything else. I don’t want you to run all the way over here just for nothing.”

“You say that as if I don’t regularly run across the globe just to see you, bud.” Sonic sent him a bland stare, “It’s no problem, I mean it.”

Tails looked at him with the exact same expression, “And I mean it when I say that everything’s fine. Besides, even if there is a badnik, it’s most likely a rogue one. I can take it out easily.”

“If you say so, lil’ bro.” The hedgehog huffed as he fell back into the grass, one arm tucked behind his head and he held the communicator in front of his face.

“I do say so. And besides, aren’t you all the way out in Chun-nan?”

“What’s that gotta do with anything? You saying I’m not fast enough to get over there?”

“I’m saying that, logically speaking, whatever situation may occur will already by over with by the time you get here.”

Sonic snorted, “Careful, buddy. You’re starting to sound a little blasphemous.”

They stayed on the call for a few more minutes before Tails hung up, saying something about how he needed to focus on testing his newest invention, as if he couldn’t do that with his dearly beloved big brother on the phone.

Sonic shook his head fondly as the call end, an equally fond smile stretched across his muzzle as he closed his eyes, his now free arm joining the other.

The peace lasted for all of ten seconds before his eyes opened again, staring hard at the sky above him.

Something wasn’t right.

His “big brother senses”— as Amy called them— were going off the charts. Tails had very good hearing. If he thought he heard something, the chances were that he probably did and him potentially hearing a badnik while being all alone setting off every alarm the hedgehog had. And that alone should’ve been reason enough to get over there

Sonic sat up again, hands balled into fists as he stared out at the horizon. He could make it there easily in he ran at top speed. Get his little brother out of whatever potential situation he was caught up in.

However… Tails has also raised a good point. There was no reason for a badnik to be in Windy Valley of all places. There was nothing out there except wind and rocks. He highly doubted the doctor was very interested in wind farms all of a sudden.

With a tsk, he collapsed back down. He trusted Tails, the kid was smart. If he thought he could handle a situation, he probably could. Sonic was just a little antsy, that was all. It had been a hot second since any signs of Eggman and that usually meant he was planning something big.

When the kit’s communicator automatically disconnected a call, Sonic ran.

this isn’t how this scene is going to canonically play out in the au. i dont like how in your face the foreshadowing is and i also dont like how weird this ends up making sonic look (at least imo). i was too tired to find a way to fix it or at least extend his pondering scene so i just gave up LMAO
