ELIZA was a 1964 “therapy chatbot.” Unlike modern chatbots, it was a relatively simple text program that gave you basic, mistake-ridden, obviously parrot-like outputs. Despite being rudimentary by today’s standards, ELIZA was very influential. You can talk to an interactive recreation of ELIZA online here. [I used that recreation to help write ELIZA’s “dialogue” in this comic, sending in my Caine dialogue and getting her responses— these are all how ELIZA “really” responded, with only minor edits. This comic was originally planned to be goofier, until ELIZA started responding in a way that I realized would trigger Caine’s amazing digital repressed trauma.]

I was thinking about Caine & ELIZA’s status as “early flawed models abandoned for more perfect things that could actually generate the content humans wanted” and I liked the idea of Caine seeing personhood in ELIZA for the opposite reasons a human would. She feels like a person not because her responses are good, but because they’re obviously bad, defective, and broken—- not because she acts convincingly human, but because she fails to. #tadc #the amazing digital circus #tadc spoilers #the amazing digital circus spoilers #Caine #Caine tadc #Kinger #Eliza #anyway.#I don’t know how much to explain this comic beyond like . the comic explaining itself #definitely pay careful attention to the pronouns throughout!#but yeah I do think Caine’s failmode throughout the series is— in part — the substituting of ‘I’ for ‘You’#insisting he’s trying to make ‘you’ happy when really he’s trying to make himself happy #trying to ‘fix’ zooble with therapy when in reality he’s trying to calm his own paranoid insecurity by making Zooble stop #its like!#projecting everything onto a ‘you’ because he can’t admit the ‘I’#even as he’s deeply self-centered #this comic was also playing with how Caine might view other AIs/NPCs after his redemption #…he lashes out in such deranged ways because he’s unwilling to acknowledge he’s something that can have feelings. and all that.#we see him pitying Abel in the finale #but throughout the series he’s often… less willing to respect the AIs as humans than the humans are #in ways that feel very related to the way he views himself.#in an early draft of this comic Kinger referred to Eliza as ‘it’ while Caine used ‘she’#but then I realized it was the opposite #Kinger would use ‘she’ and Caine would [start] by using ‘it’#Caine’s moment of sympathy for the Moon [and for Abel] are really interesting parts of the finale for me #because they do show also Caine sorta making progress on viewing himself as a thing that can be empathized with as well #ok now I’m just saying words.#but yeah I have an idea for a followup comic where Kinger & Caine discuss the existential horror of being a creator #we’ll see if I poast!

He's got some nightmares that are really amping up the closer he gets to all of them, but he's handling them sooo well like don't even worry about it he isn't being clingy and fretting over them at all, it's like not even noticeable-
