went through imports folder and cut file size from ~400 to ~40 mb. can everybody clap for my excellent problem solving skills and not immediately crying like i wouldve a year ago?

if its fixable
on the edges of any transparent mesh, 3d sprites clip through if viewed closely
and it only happens on the edges, get close enough to the center and nothing happens -
this is probably the depth sorting step messing up since it's going per-object instead of per-pixel. partially transparent stuff is rendered back to front (and 3d sprites count since they don't take up the full rectangle) and the code that sorts them is probably sorting objects just by their centers. godot calls it transparency sorting. potential workaround: split transparent objects that visibly have this issue into multiple parts, so for stuff like windows that are single planes, replace them with a grid of smaller plane objects that just barely touch. if you want to get fancy, you can have the split happen dynamically when the camera gets near the window
another option that might work to make sprite3ds specifically play nice is to use something other than ALPHA_CUT_DISABLED for alpha_cut
switched to alpha cut discard for everything but the player because lod doesnt work for other reasons, currently attempting the potential workaround! ty for the advice ^^

if i were ever captured by aliens i would draw out a circle and two triangles and a square and a pentagon to try and show im intelligent by representing polyhedra and then they vapourise me on the spot believing me to be non sentient because plato didnt exist therefore they consider the kepler poinsot polyhedra to be part of the series as they discovered it all at the same time through maths and think im just randomly scribbling
