Help two families stay warm this winter!

As you may recall, my friend Amal ( @amal-ashour-new ) and her family (11 people in total, soon to be 12 as Amal is pregnant and due very soon) are currently displaced in Gaza. Heavy rains in recent days have flooded their tent and soaked all of their belongings; to compound this difficulty Amal's husband Mu'tasim is injured and unable to get the treatment he needs. They are cold, wet, and at risk of becoming sick as the winter weather begins.

The Ashour and Shehab families need new, better-quality tents, as well as warm blankets and pillows to replace those they've lost. This is not a matter of luxury or even comfort, but of survival—without these vital resources, they are vulnerable to exposure and illness.

In order for everyone to get what they need, Amal and her family need to raise about $5,000 USD:

$700 x 2 for two tents

$200 x 11 for blankets, mattresses, and pillows

$100 x 11 for winter clothes (especially important for Amal and her new baby)

Minimum of 20% lost in transfers

If you have the means, please consider contributing to the Ashour and Shehab families' campaign and helping to ensure that they can be as safe and warm as possible this winter. $5,000 may seem like a lot, but I know together we can help Amal and her loved ones reach this preliminary goal! If you have somewhere dry and comfortable to stay, and a roof over your head, all the more reason to remember those who are struggling in extreme weather this season, and pitch in in support.

-The fine print on medical financing, store credit cards, and contactless payment is also not what it seems.

-Payday loans are still predatory, even when offered by your employer

-Rewards programs are an income stream for the companies that run them. The points systems are manipulated so that the house always wins. They depend on people leaving money in rewards accounts and not in interest-bearing traditional bank accounts.

-Electronic payment apps like VenMo are not banks. You don’t earn interest. Your money is not protected.

-Your financial information is not private if your money is not kept in a regulated bank.

-None of this is regulated by the FDIC. Your money is not protected if it is held by a non-bank doing banking business. Our economy is not protected from the collapse of financial institutions that are not banks.

PEOPLE! DO NOT LEAVE YOUR MONEY IN VENMO OR APPLE PAY OR ANY OF THIS SHIT. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GO FIND A REAL BANK OR A CREDIT UNION.

If Venmo were to close tomorrow all your money would vanish. There's no insurance or guarantee on any of these things. I know banks aren't great but legit banks will have the "FDIC insured" logo on their doors and websites, which means if my bank goes under tomorrow I still get my money back. Also I guarantee you there is a credit union somewhere in your town, go find it.
