finally FINALLY posting that new year's eve annotated romance novel chapter fic i've been alluding to for over a year LMAO :) enjoyyyy

- the treatment of black characters is frankly abhorrent. this is the most upsetting element of the show by fucking miles. they refuse to acknowledge the elephant in the room about the parts of the show that are set in virginia during the civil war and brush over the fact that katherine (white)’s “handmaiden” emily (black) slots exactly into the magical negro trope. as does the whole bennett family. and also literally and honestly every SINGLE other black character they introduce for the entire rest of the show. if a new black actor shows up there’s genuinely a 99% chance they’re playing a witch. and then the show doesn’t even do anything INTERESTING with their witches! bonnie’s magic is developed off screen - her grandmother dies (see above) and she’s written out for a few episodes only to come back with tragic bangs and with the ‘teenage witch learns her powers’ part of her arc already over. which is crazy. that’s the BEST BIT about TEENAGE WITCHES. lowkey bonnie could be the main character of the whole show if the writers treated her right. instead she’s written out of batches of episodes at a time until the plot needs her to save the white protagonists yet again. she’s also the only black character that survives longer than a few episodes. poor harper i loved harper i was endeared to him immediately and they introduced him GENUINELY just to torture him and kill him off. i can’t believe i haven’t seen more people talk about this show’s racism problem it is impossible to ignore
