I live in the northwest coast of Canada so we walk everywhere and do stuff outside in the rain and swim in whatever lakes and rivers we find so imagine my smug sense of Canadian superiority when I met a USAmerican Midwesterner who was horrified at the very thought
And then I went to the USAmerican Midwest
And I understood
What I mean to say is that it's very easy to delude yourself into believing you are more in tune with your environment when your environment is not actively hostile to your existence in every conceivable way

I had a similar experience growing up. We could just swim wherever we wanted and it was essentially fine. There aren't any poisonous snakes/aquatic predators to worry about.
However, here there are venomous water snakes and snapping turtles which can bite off a toe if you're not careful. I'm prepared to face off against a cougar, but not a snapping turtle lol.
Swimming in lake Michigan is also no joke. The surface is deceptively calm, the water is insanely cold, and it has really powerful rip currents that are harder to noice.
Pollution is also a bigger issue where I am.
Getting used to the unpredictable weather as well. It doesn't just drizzle, it downpours like crazy. It's been a ride.
