How to Identify that Light in the Sky
Credits: The League of Lost Causes
There's this notion that being able to stream professional theater shows will hurt the industry, because people won't go to the effort to support live theater anymore, and this is based on the anxieties of the film industry, but live theater isn't a film. The better analogy is sports.
Look me dead in the eye and tell me that people being able to sit at home and watch The Game -- the fandom that encourages, the ongoing investment over the years, the memories and traditions of Watching the Game with family and friends -- harms the ticket sales of real live go-to-the-stadium sports. Of course it doesn't. Of course all that *is the reason* that people care so much about sports they'll invest a small fortune on not only tickets but often travel costs to be part of it all in person. And the people who aren't doing that *can't* do that and weren't going to regardless, but their at-home participation and investment still boosts the profile of pro and NCAA sports as cultural institutions.
Maybe it's possible to fall in love with film and be immune to the romance of Going to the Cinema such that you'll just freely choose the same film in the comfort of your living room. It's not possible to fall in love with something that happens live and not want to be there to experience it. The consequences of procasts, for theater just like for sports, can only be A) more people motivated to make live theater part of their worlds, aka more money, when theaters everywhere could desperately use more money, or B) more love. Which is worth arguing for because reasons I assume I don't have to defend.
a good thread
Every so often I catch a glimpse of the book drama going on over on the Insta/Threads sphere of the Internet, and it makes me so glad Iām considered too Tumblrina to sit at their tables.
What do you mean an author is railing against people using libraries/the Libby app because itās āfreeā (itās not. you as the author get money from the library purchasing the digital lending license) and meanwhile their book is on Amazon for free to try and get readers??? Hello????
āBut if people read it for free they might like it want to buy the rest of my work!ā
You mean like how people read books at libraries, and end up buying them if they like them?
āThatās not the same š”ā
Correct! Because again, libraries pay us. You putting your books up on Amazon for free means you get nothing.

we gotta get back into revolving bookcases i'm begging
truly we allow the pinnacles of human achievement to wither and collapse into ashes in the wind
"If you accept any food from the fae, they shall never let you go" is a human belief. The fair folk stand by the principle that if you feed 'em, you gotta keep 'em. If wildlife learns to rely on you for food, you have already fucked up, and you can't just stop feeding them cold turkey. That human is your responsibility now. Because you left your peach cobbler unsupervised.

I think one of my favorite running gags in TDP is when Amaya curses in sign language, Gren will censor it for her (to keep it a kids' show)
Gren, interpreting: I'm here to save your... posterior Amaya: signs aggressively Gren: She wishes for me to let you know she said a... different word... than... posterior...

I think Dawn would have a lot of respect for Jenny, the way she lives her life, and the choices she makes. But one thing Dawn would NEVER understand, is why Ms. Calendar and Giles arenāt married. No matter how Jenny tries to explain not wanting to get married, Dawn has the same argument.
Jenny: Some people donāt need marriage, Dawn. Besides, Iāve said this a thousand times, my people-
Dawn: Your family would never accept your marriage. Jenny, I KNOW! But heās yours anyway, what difference does it make?
Jenny: And what difference does it make to NOT be married?
Dawn: Thereās a difference to Giles.
Jenny: Dawn, he and I have talked about this EXTENSIVELY. He doesnāt care.
Dawn: Sure he SAYS he doesnāt care, but that doesnāt mean he doesnāt.
Jenny: He doesnāt.
Dawn: Sure.
Jenny: Well, the difference matters to me and I donāt want to choose.
Dawn: Choose what?
Jenny: If I marry him, Iām choosing him over my people.
Dawn: Who said that? And besides, you already DID.
Jenny: No, I-
Dawn: You picked him. Thatās why youāre with him.
Jenny stared at her.
Dawn: If your family told you that you couldnāt have him anymore, would you ever listen?
Jenny: No.
Dawn: Then thereās your answer.
Jenny: Itās not that simple-
Dawn: It really is. You love him more than anything. Why do you act like marrying him would take something away?
Jenny: My culture is important to me. My-
Dawn: And what about marrying GILES takes away from your culture? He lets you do WHATEVER. Iāve never seen a man LESS in his girlfriendās business, actually.
Jenny: Dawn-
Dawn: Whatever. But if you EVER marry someone that isnāt him-
Jenny: And why would I do THAT?!?
Dawn: Iām just SAYING! Giles loves you more than anything. So if youāre gonna marry someone, it better be him.
Jenny: Iām not marrying anyone, Dawn. Ever.
Dawn: Fine. Whatever. I just know he would marry YOU in a heartbeat.
Something about that sounded suspiciously like Rupert had discussed this with Dawn.
Jenny: What did he say to you?
Dawn: What?
Jenny: Rupert. Giles- what did he say to you?
Dawn: He didnāt say anything.
Jenny: Dawn-
Dawn: He didnāt! I asked him why you werenāt married and he said you didnāt wanna get married. And when I asked why he said it was none of my business and to stop being so nosey and that if I was gonna keep being nosey, I could at least ask YOU.
Jenny: Dawn-
Dawn: And you know what? Yeah, he DID say he wanted to marry you. When I asked him why he didnāt just propose to you anyway, he said if it were that simple, youād have been married years ago!

Hey do you know what rumination is?
Rumination is probably the most common type of OCD compulsion, but I rarely see anyone talking about it. I've talked to multiple people diagnosed with OCD who didn't even recognize it as a compulsion.
Basically, if you have OCD you have terrible intrusive thoughts. They can be about anything, but common themes are fear of being a bad person, fear of hurting someone, fear of contamination. etc.
Rumination is when you get stuck in a spiral. Rumination is when you spend hours catastrophizing, overthinking, analyzing, telling yourself it's going to be okay.
I'll say it again:
Rumination is a compulsion.
Rumination is a compulsion, and that means you have to stop doing it.
I did ERP (exposure response prevention) for my OCD with a therapist! For 9 months! And it did help, but the idea didn't really click until I found this website a couple years later.
And Oh My God. It made things make so much more sense, and I was able to pull myself out of an episode even though I wasn't in therapy or on meds at the time.
Genuinely if you have OCD, or even if you suspect you have OCD, I'm begging you to read some of these articles.
Like this was genuinely life changing for me.
Here are some of the ones that were most helpful to me:
