I made this comic around the time I started developing characters for FLY. It came from a time I wore a pink shirt in 5th grade and my peer told me I wasn’t supposed to be “pretty”
Through the overwhelming love I’ve received there were a few notions that I noticed in all the noise. One especially concerning is this idea that boys should not be portrayed in ways that have anything to do with femininity. But I believe there is a world where boys can be loved for all the colors, be soft, be strong, be bold. And know that the things the love never make them any less of a man. I made fly for the black boy in me that was afraid to where pink. I want that kid to soar.

This is commonly taken to mean that in order for a woman to make an impact she has to make noise, she has to rebel against the norm, she has to misbehave. Yet when Laurel Thatcher Ulrich first coined the phrase in 1976 this was not the meaning she had in mind. Well behaved women are important, but they are seldom remembered. Women have been ignored by historian for centuries, dismissed by many men as incapable of great achievement; forgotten.

So much of modern media celebrates the kind of woman that makes noise and rebels against the norm, but let's not forget the quiet women, the ones behind the scenes, the ones that might not be rocking the boat. They can also have an impact. They also matter.
Let's not belittle one kind of woman to uplift another.
I think this is one reason why 2022 Persuasion has angered so many people. The way they changed Anne's character communicates that only one kind of woman is admirable, only one kind of woman deserves to be the heroine of story. It does a disservice to the nuanced, complex, varied personalities and characters and stories of women.

OP did a lovely job with this piece. The pose they picked is a difficult one to do correctly and dynamically- the doubling over is hard to illustrate without making it look weird or poorly drawn, the low seat of the “pelvis” making the figure dip down lower (to emphasize the clutching motion of the hands) is a hard perspective to imagine without a reference. I liked the way OP chose to draw the shoulders, evoking both the hunching of shoulders that would be present in a fleshier painting and drawing out the strong, dynamic curve of the body.
The blood, the desperate clutch, the crying and the pose all suggest something religious, making the post all the more impactful with its drawing- The caramel frappe does not answer the subject, just as God does not answer the subjects of paintings who depicted the same theme.
It’s also intriguing where OP chose to put details. In amostly minimalist creation, the (relatively) detailed frappe, hands, and face guides your eyes in a a dynamic way- from the frappe to the face, then follows the line of the body out to the end of the legs- making the art more interesting to the eye.
I have a theory about the colors that I’m not sure is true, but I think the subject being black and white separates it from the frappe, which is fully colored. The blood, neither frappe nor person colored, acts as a connector between the two– the only ways the two subjects can connect are through touch and sight, both of which causes the human subject pain. Then again, I may be reading into things too much idk

Im going to hold your hand when I say this. It is not realistic to expect yourself or your family to be able to survive solely off of food you have foraged or grown in a garden. People with more knowledge and experience have tried and failed. What do you think happened to all of those communes in the 60s? Most of them failed. Famine and malnutrition have been constant companions to humanity until industrialized farming and food supply lines came along.
It feels like a uniquely American capitalist take to assume these traditions will make you completely self sufficient. You need a lot of people, a lot of time, a lot of knowledge across a lot of subjects, and a lot of luck to provide for everyone's nutritional needs.
So should you even bother trying to be more self sufficient with your food? I argue yes. Foraging and gardening are fun and will teach you so much about many things. They are deeply rewarding activities that can supplement your diet. There are herbs I haven't bought in years because I grow my own. There are dishes I can only make with foraged ingredients because I can't get them in stores.
You may not have the power to do everything, but that doesn't mean your efforts are wasted. Getting 5% of your nutritional needs from food you have grown or foraged, even for a season, is a massive accomplishment.
I think (for Americans, at least) this idea can be traced back to the pioneer/westward expansion around the 1800s, and the propaganda that was based on that in the 1950s-60s.
It's all very "rugged individualist" in a way that's both dangerous and unrealistic. For example, the propaganda is that homesteaders did it all themselves, built cities from nothing, etc. etc. Reality is that they had significant support from the federal government. That's before getting into the racism/genocide of it.
Anyway, I love gardening as a hobby. Great way to get outside, be active, etc. It'll help you learn more about food production and your local environment, and plenty of places will also have gardening groups where you can meet friends.
If someone wants to garden to save money, I generally recommend a few herbs in pots, followed by tomatoes and leafy greens. Why? They're the more expensive items from a grocery store and they're pretty easy to grow.
In addition to the above, people will have a vague idea that the peoples who are native to America were able to "do it", so they should be able to figure it out, too. But the thing is, the way the native peoples approach foraging involved a lot of care taking of the land over multiple generations to create and maintain and improve their food sources. At least in the region I'm in, these food growing areas are dispersed to where the plants grew best, instead of trying to grow all of the food species in one location. Once you start learning about it, the hunting and gathering looks less like mainstream American ideas about hunting and foraging and more like a really awesome agricultural system. (Incredible variety over the continent cannot be summarized in one post so I'm not gonna try)
In addition to this, they also had massive trade networks. So not only was it a community level undertaking versus a single individual or family, it was an undertaking between communities.
No one has ever done it alone. We do it with community and community networks. Do learn about gardening and foraging and all the other food production skills, and pair that with learning how to build and be in community. We need each other.

the fridge-freezer is in the kitchen. Not only are there dishes every day, not only are there food preparation surfaces of various kinds every day, not only are there crumbs and odds and ends that fall on the floor every day ... but the fridge-freezer is in the kitchen. The oven is in the kitchen, the food cupboards are in the kitchen, and above all THE KITCHEN BIN IS IN THE KITCHEN.
I mean, it's not like the bathroom is all sweetness and light, but seriously! Who in their right mind is choosing the bathroom?!?!?!?

Having a magically-self-cleaning bathroom would be cool, but it wouldn't dramatically change my lifestyle.
If I could cook or bake whatever the hell I wanted, knowing that all my pots and mixing bowls and baking sheets would just zap themselves clean when I finished? If I knew that I could spill batter or grease inside the oven or burn things onto baking racks and it would just go away? I would be making delicious shit constantly.
