So my beta reader for the Big Fics is an astrophysicist, right. Who is currently also writing a hard sci-fi novel about the exploration of Phobos (more power to them, I cannot with the physics required for that, best I can do is soft sci-fi/fantasy and that reminds me I should finish that story).
Anyway I was bitching about how hard it is to come up with feasible planets in Star Wars because sometimes you need a new planet from scratch and sometimes you need to know more about a planet than the 'has jungles, is probably a moon technically' than Wookieepedia will give you, and they're like 'oh yeah I can do something about that'.
So they've written (in Matlab but they swear it will run as a .exe as well and I may be conscripted to embed it as a web tool at some point) a star system generator.
You input what you know about the planet (ecosystem, population, sun colour, does it have liquid water, does it have a moon or moons, is it a moon or moons, temperature averages, atmosphere, you get me) and it will give you the... everything else about the star system, in obedience to real-universe physics. And if you input nothing you get a randomly generated star system.
And I’m like oh I know people who will be into this with a vengeance, and they're not on Tumblr, so this is me seeing who exactly would be keen on, and I cannot stress this enough, a real-physics comprehensive star system generator.
It's still in the debugging phase (last error fixed: every planet wants to have a population of exactly 5000 regardless of other factors, turned out to be a missing equals sign somewhere), but I'm psyched for this and trying to gauge interest for how high a priority 'make this an accessible web tool' needs to be.

Also, consider. A magical version of the bends. Whenever someone from a non- or low-magical land has to go into a very magic rich forest or land or dimension, having to take breaks to let their bodies adjust to the new magic exposure or else their blood will boil in their veins or they'll Transform
actually the bends only kicks in when you try to LEAVE the high pressure area. or in this case, magic rich area?
Getting deeper and deeper into feywilds and knowing that however deep you get, it’s gonna take twice as long to escape without magic tearing its way out of you
tree grafting techniques
I used to teach fruit tree grafting for Extension. The important thing to know about it is that you have to give the graft nutrition or it will die, and you do that by attaching it properly to the rootstock plant's vascular system. Woody plants go bark -> phloem (food transport) -> cambium (growing layer) -> xylem (woody layers). The cambium is the nice green layer under the bark and is a good visual signal for what you need to connect the grafts to so that they get nutrition from the phloem and can grow together as their cambiums repair the cuts. You can see that in all the grafting techniques shown. You have to match up at least one side of the graft so it's cambium to cambium and make sure those stay in contact, otherwise the graft will die.
That video also has a plant propagation technique called air layering in it (the one where they root a branch into a jar) -- the branch is left intact on the top side until there's good root formation for the same reason.
Dandelion Root Coffee
I was inspired to write about the magnificent dandelion today as an earthy caramel-like scent wafted through the house. The aroma of roasting dandelion roots is totally unlike anything I have ever smelled before, and definitely not what I expected (being well-accustomed to the smell of the bitter white latex in the leaves).
I’m a coffee addict: at minimum, I probably drink about half of a pot a day, as do most Scandinavians. I’ve worked in a fairtrade coffee cooperative before, and despite all the best efforts to improve the coffee industry, it is as exploitative and environmentally destructive as ever. Therefore, I am always on the lookout for local and/or temperate-hardy sustainable alternatives to get my bitter fix, like chicory and the Kentucky Coffeetree. I even grow my own coffee plants indoors.
Another delectable option for warm tannic satisfaction came today in the form of a dandelion. I was prepping an area to put in some new trees, so I had to clear out some flora. As I pulled up root after root, remembered tattiehoking’s post about dandelion coffee, and decided to give it a go.
I came to understand today that one of the many benefits that has come from covering the garden in mulch instead of grass has been the sheer size of the dandelion roots available for harvest. The dandelions that grow on the grass plane are wiry and stunted, but the behemoths I dug up in the mulched areas may as well be carrots.
With a little under 2 hours between harvest and steeping, I washed, chopped, and then oven-dried the roots at 100˚ C, turning it up to 180˚ C for the last 30 minutes to roast them. After steeping the resulting pellets for a good five minutes, I topped off my mug with a splash of maple syrup: my Canadian roots seemed to intuit that it was the right thing to do.
The result was a caramel-like brew that is an excellent tonic for the liver and gall bladder, which is also being researched as an anti-cancer medicine. [x] It was truly delicious, which–considering my habits–is bad news for the dandelions in the rest of the local area.
Unsure? Try it before you make it

Just in case you forget this exists.
It exists.
With those “when you want to design a character but you don’t know color theory” posts flying around I thought this would be relevant again.
SLAMs THE REBLOG BUTTON
there’s also Coolors website that gives you randomized palettes!
Don’t forget ColourLovers, either! It’s a social media-esque site where you can browse tons of palettes and share your own.
You can browse the most popular ones or search for certain colors, themes, and even specific hex codes!
When you find one you like, you can download a wallpaper swatch of it and also select the specific colors it uses to look at more palettes that use those same ones.
ColourLovers is my go-to for when I’m having trouble coming up with a color scheme! It’s also been around for over a decade, so there’s plenty to browse through.
@color-palettes also has a lovely curated collection of palettes to work from!

Christmas present for my little brother. He liked the black and grey luminous nine patch quilt when he saw it and said it would have been perfect… had it only been a king size.
So. Instead of five colours, I have seven greys and blacks, which, if my math is correct, will make the quilt 112”x129” or so; plenty big for even a king.
Got it done.
She’s a massive 112”x129” (as I calculated 🎉) and I put double batting in as requested by the girlfriend.
Used the thread colour “Shadow” to do the quilting and Northcott cotton on the back and the same solid black as the last outside colour for the binding.
Hits the floor all the way around a king size bed.
More pieces from the Vinita Cultural Center from last year's basketry exhibit
#the museum i worked at had a collection of these baskets!!!#they are like #idk its hard to describe them #they dont look quite like regular baskets they look like so beautiful #anyways check out the Mountain Heritage Center's exhibit on cherokee/rivercane baskets to learn more
Yes, for some reason I don't think they had any Rivercane baskets at this exhibit, the Vinita cultural center is a bit small so maybe that had to do with it? But traditionally Rivercane baskets look like this:
(credit to Lizzie "Nannie" Youngblood and Rowana Bradley, artist unknown for the Chief's Heart shoppers basket)
The basket pictured in the post is likely commercial round reed (with some flat reed), the commercial form of the materials we would use such as Honeysuckle, Buckbrush, or Trumpet Vine. Many Western Cherokee picked up round reed basketry due to lack of supply of Rivercane after the forced removal to Oklahoma.

breaking news! new beautiful photo of the best species of frog in the world just dropped
cochranella euknemos, 📸 nuqui_herping on instagram
for everyone in the notes lamenting that this guy is poisonous: they are not! they're just pretty :) since they're a glass frog, their major defense mechanism is being translucent and hiding their blood while they sleep so they look extra translucent and blend in with leaves <3
ok so, I approached my local library with a proposal to donate a mural as a way to A: build portfolio/gain practical experience and B: give back to a beloved public institution. The director was very enthusiastic about it and i've been working on it since the beginning of March. Come with me as I endeavor to paint what is in all honesty an excessive amount of birds
I wanted the birds to look like they were actually in the space so first thing after doing the draft was to do a lighting study
after that I covered the walls in letters in lieu of a projector/vr headset bc i have neither of those :) Then i take a picture of the section of wall and superimpose the lineart over top of it so I can pencil in the lines
et voila
and that was a whole week on it's own so next comes the paintin' >:)
and now, the birds
Birds 1 and 2/14: Red Winged Blackbird, Male and female, Agelaius phoeniceus
Bird 3/14, American Robin, Turdus migratorius
hoo boy, ok *out of breath*
GIVE IT UP FOR BIRD NUMBUH 5, THE CANADIAN GOOSE, Branta canadensis!!!!
this guy took me about 4 days to completely finish, all of those freakingk coverts were a bear to render
speaking of obnoxious coverts:
bird 6/14, Bluejay, Cyanocitta cristata
the friggin stripes almost got me chat, i may not make it
(x)
The cat is so stoked to be there??? What a little star. 💜
My mother makes and sells beautiful handfelted woolen animals, but AI-generated listings have clogged Etsy’s feed and destroyed her business. For the first time approaching the holidays she has zero orders.
Please take a look if you need a gift idea. They are truly extraordinary pieces.
The BramblyWoods
Please, tell your mom that her creations are absolutely beautiful. It may be a good idea to move anywhere away from etsy, it seems that marketplace is just dead.
Wish i didn't live on another side if the world :/
Sadly there aren’t great alternatives to Etsy right now. She needs a good social media presence so she can run an independent shop but she’s not social media savvy. She does, however, ship anywhere in the world!
I saw on another Tumblr post a while back that go imagine is trying to be what Etsy was supposed to be originally. I don't know how much it a user base they've actually cultivated though. Maybe something to look into?
Shop Handmade | Shop Local | Shop with Purpose
Well, they can't have a user base if nobody knows about them, so let's get it out there!
