When I was a kid watching tv was idiot coded and nerds read books, but now scrolling shortform videos is considered braindead behavior and watching tv means you're some kinda intellectual. You might think this shifting assessment of media's consumers might make readers into absolute super geniuses, but no. Only perverts read now.

dna is often explained as if it was computer code, but its important to remember its literally a bunch of physical strings. just as important as the sequence itself is how these physical strings are packaged and where proteins attach to them, because this determines which parts can even be read
It's not ALL DNA, I don't recall the specifics right now, but yes, it does turn into this stringy thing when you purify it for DNA extraction. I was amazed when I saw it for the first time, it really looks like what you would imagine it to be.

for @merthurmicrofic | prompt : « enemy » | 540 words
Gwaine was rudely awoken by his flatmate ringing him at the nice and civilised time of 06:30 am. He answered the call begrudgingly, praying that whatever Merlin had rung him about was worth waking him up so bloody early. It was.
"I just fucked Arthur Pendragon."
"What?”
Gwaine took a deep breath in as he struggled to take in this very unexpected confession from Merlin.
"Okay, well not just, I mean last night, but–"
"Hold on a sec, Merlin, what the fuck?" Gwaine was sitting up properly now, fully awake and alert. "What happened? Was it good?"
"It was the best sex I've ever had, but that's not the point!" Gwaine would have ventured to describe Merlin's tone as borderline hysterical. He would have been more concerned if the whole thing hadn't sounded so bloody ridiculous.
"The point is," Merlin continued, sounding rather annoyed with himself, "that I finally have a good time one night and the guy turns out to be Arthur Pendragon! My mortal enemy!"
"Merls, what do you mean Arthur Pendragon is your 'mortal enemy'? And more importantly, how the fuck did you not recognise him!? How drunk were you?"
"Oi, I barely drunk anything last night!" Merlin retorted indignantly. "And just 'cos I hate the guy, it doesn't mean I know exactly what he looks like." Merlin scoffed with audible contempt.
Gwaine paused for a moment to reflect on what he knew about the situation. First and foremost, the infamous Arthur Pendragon was England's star footballer, due to captain the team in the World Cup next month. And then there was the fact that Merlin hated football with a passion. Because 'the players get paid too fucking much' and 'we could find much better uses for all this land than building these fucking ugly stadiums'. Merlin's most recent argument explaining why football was 'the fucking worst sport ever except for golf' was the quite frankly ridiculous price of the World Cup tickets. And of course, the brunt of Merlin's hatred fell on one particular player. The rather good-looking Arthur Pendragon. Even Merlin would admit that the man was somewhat handsome. But never once had Merlin gone as far to describe Arthur as his 'mortal enemy'. Gwaine very cleverly inferred that Merlin must have been just a little bit pissed off about last night's turn of events.
"What are you going to do now, then?" asked the ever-practical Gwaine. "Do you want me to pick you up from anywhere?" There was a slight pause. "You're not still in his house, are you?"
"It's a flat, not a house," Merlin mumbled guiltily. "And no, I'm fine, he's just gone out to get stuff for breakfast."
"He's gone to get stuff for breakfast!?" Gwaine repeated incredulously. "He can't be all bad then Merls."
Merlin made a rather non-commital sound on the other end of the line, which Gwaine took to mean that he agreed.
"So, I'll ask again, what are you going to do?"
There was another pause before Merlin whispered guiltily, "Do you think he's into hate sex?"
"I think you'll be fine, Merls," Gwaine said before hanging up.
During his next phone call with Merlin, the following morning, he was informed that the answer was yes.

If anyone's ever wondering why I come across as such an arrogant bitch on Tumblr it's because I used to work in science with a lot of men and never readjusted my communication style afterward.
This is one of my biggest seemingly low-stakes feminist soapboxes. Women are often encouraged to take hedging, consensus-seeking, and checking-in phrases out of their speech in order to seem "more confident". And listen, of course you do not need to say "I think" when you actually know for pretty damn sure, or double-check every little thing you say, or apologize for things that are out of your control.
But there are men in my life who I respect, who I think are generally good communicators, but who have admitted to me that if they do not know the answer to something they will just state their best guess in a confident tone of voice, with no hedging or clarification to warn the listener that what they just said was pulled from their ass.
I once asked my high school boyfriend what noise a platypus makes and he confidently told me "oh they quack" and I said "really? that seems like they'd have different noise-making structures than ducks since they're not birds" and he said "oh yeah you're probably right. I was just guessing." And had no idea why I was mad! I was like, so if I ask you a question you might just bullshit me?? What if I had believed you and gone and repeated that to other people? I could have looked like an idiot. I could have spread misinformation to a ton of people! But I have told that story to other men and had them say "oh yeah I totally do that."
This is so much worse communication than just saying "I don't know but I think..." There shouldn't be campaigns training professional women to sound "more confident," there should be campaigns training professional MEN to stop doing whatever THAT is!
