Something about Merlin being allegorical to the concept of the โperfect queer personโ. A queer person who allies themselves with their oppressors, hides their identity, and does as theyโre told. Someone who never allows themselves the things they desire most and always puts the goals of their oppressors over the community they would be readily accepted by. Someone who would go so far as to betray the rest of their community to avoid disrupting the status quo, despite knowing theyโll never be truly accepted, loved or respected. At first it was out of survival, but eventually itโs out of habit, because this is how they learn to live.
โMagic will never have a place in Camelotโ was the single line that forever condemned Merlin and every magic user to a lifetime of suffering, and the judge jury and executioner was the boy who was supposed to be their saviour, who forgot how to want to be free.
In my efforts to keep playing with light and shadows in digital coloring, I will want to present; Merlin and Arthur (Merthur)
More folks in the public eye could take notes from Katie McGrath. More actors should refuse social media. More actors should make fans knowing their birthday into a quest lasting over a decade. More actresses should casually talk about wanting to fuck Marla from Fight Club on an obscure film podcast without feeling an obligation to loudly reveal an identity label to the world first before being horny on main.
I like to imagine Katie McGrath and Colin Morgan going out to lunch together and just CACKLING about how well they evade any expectations of them as actors.
Katie shares her Chaotic Asides approach and Colin shares his Evasive Answers approach and together their media-vexing powers only get stronger.
Iโve actually adopted Colinโs technique of answering a personal question with a broad-ass generalization about the topic that concludes with an easy slide into another topic, which immediately redirects the question-askerโs attention.
10/10 would recommend to anyone wanting to avoid talking about yourself. If you want to avoid answering questions, watch Colin Morgan interviews. Ninja level non-answer answering skills.

Bandits? Magic light ball knocks them out. A strange ravine? Well, magic light ball did it. They're trapped somewhere? Don't worry, Arthur would tell his knights, a magic light ball will rescue us.
It goes for longer than it should, years and years of mishaps and miraculous rescues.
Until Arthur asks the light ball to heal his father and sees Merlin's eyes lighting up when the ball touches the wound.

As many of you already guessed, THIS was the very inspiration for the series! Honestly, Iโve wanted to draw Geralt adorned in courting jewelry ever since I read this fic years ago, and Iโm so happy I finally got to do it.
