inspired by @probablily's tags on this post i would propose that if shane did start calling ilya sir during the hook up era then, it's because it started as a bit. so much between them seems to straddle the line of "oh haha, you cannot be serious . . . unless π" and this would be no different.
it would start in some long stretch where they're not going to see each other for a while and ilya is feeling moody about it. so he texts shane, whose game schedule he definitely doesn't have memorised, "score me a goal tonight." because he knows he can get a rise out of him. of course, shane shoots him a "what are you? my coach?" back and it devolves from there. shane being shane, eventually agrees with a "sir yes sir π"
he tries to think nothing of it. he has Rules about hockey that don't involve ilya rozanov and he'd promised himself he wouldn't let him interfere, but then, is it really interfering if it's a net positive for his team? anyway, he scores the goal late in the third and there's a text waiting for him when he finally gets off the ice. "well done" it says. nothing more and there's this squirming mix of pride and shame churning in his belly about it that he correctly identifies as A Can of Wormsβ’ which he's going to ignore thank you very much.
he thinks that'll be the end of it but then ilya keeps doing it.
"here is my 5k time, hollander. beat it."
"go out with your teammates tonight. send me a picture."
every time, shane's protests get weaker and ilya is more insistent, and it always ends with a "yes sir." except now the snark is gone, replaced by a buzzing under shane's skin he doesn't know what to do with, and the water between them is so muddy that he's not sure what this is leading towards.
when they do finally meet next, ilya prowls into his space, crowding him against the nearest wall, and when the inevitable, "get on your knees" arrives, so does a breathless, "yes sir."
shane freezes, just for a moment, caught between embarrassment and arousal, but then ilya looks at him like a wolf might look at a rabbit and any embarrassment he did feel evaporates.
