Nobody grew up waiting eagerly for their chance to fry their face over that lye soap. Ed and Stede are actually a great example of a complex, loving, and nontoxic relationship. They see each other very clearly. They play together, they relate to each other, they enjoy spending time together. They understand the other deeply, but also struggle with their own flaws, problems, hangups. They are imperfect and they love each other perfectly.

It’s a wonderfully positive representation of a deep and loving relationship. It’s narratively interesting and it doesn’t need toxicity to make it interesting.
