Okay I’m going to back up for a second here
Yes, a fetus is human from the moment of conception.
Fetuses have unique DNA, metabolize nutrients on their own, grow and respond to their environment; they are alive. (See the link for the definition of life)
A fetus is a living human. We know it is alive, and we know that at the very least it will grow into something unanimously considered human. Biological life does not just transform into something else at certain points in its life cycle—its either human from the point where unique DNA is formed (conception) until death, or it is never human.
Fetuses have human DNA and are living according to a biological definition of life. It follows that they are human.
If a fetus is a human, does that make it a person deserving all the same rights as the rest of us?
You could make the argument that, no they don’t, because they are too young or unable to make decisions, etc., but I would caution against that. These types of arguments are the same ones that were used to justify slavery.
All humans deserve equal rights.
But should fetuses be protected by the law? It’s insanely hard to police that, as mentioned in the posts above, but just because something is hard doesn’t mean it’s not right.
Yes, fathers should pay child support for fetuses. It costs money to maintain a pregnancy just like it costs money to care for a child outside the womb.
Yeah, you should be able to insure a fetus.
And yeah, you shouldn’t deport pregnant mothers because they are carrying a US citizen. You shouldn’t deport pregnant mothers at all because that is a very stressful process and adds unnecessary stress to the child.
Same for incarcerated pregnant women, though that’s a problem I dont have an answer for if the woman is dangerous and needs to be incarcerated. Just because a law is hard to enforce doesn’t mean its morally wrong.
And finally, yes. Fetuses should legally be considered human and thus assigned SSN’s, etc. Its hard to do photo ID’s because all you have is a sonogram, but most other children don’t have photo ID’s either, so that’s not much of a problem.
TL;DR: A fetus is a living person. Just because our laws were created with adult people in mind doesn’t change the fact that all people deserve equal protection under the law.
