Which reminds me. The work colleague who makes display signage using AI art is finally getting told to knock it off bc a reference librarian overheard some patrons mocking said AI art the other day and also bc we got a write in comment about how disappointed the commenter was that the public library ie an information center would use AI. it’s funny how we’re getting to the point in the AI lifespan where you can feel the desperation from tech companies to have you use their AI features. instagram has moved their AI effects to the top of the menu when you’re creating a post for your story, exactly where the draw/edit button used to be. gmail is creating one-click AI-generated replies right before you open up the text box. spotify put a beta AI playlist generator on the front page that looks just like a search bar so all of their users accidentally click on it when they go to search for a song.

tech companies are shaking in their boots trying to prove to shareholders that their investment in AI is worth it, to the point where they’re tricking their users into using the AI features even for a split second in order to fudge the numbers. like awww is your little environment-destroying toy not wielding the results you hoped for? so sad!

Opinion on Texas’ adding biblical literature to it’s mandatory reading list for all public schools?

Honestly I'm not familiar enough with how they intend to roll it into the curriculum to say for sure. I do think there's some significant cultural awareness value in reading stories from the Bible, just as there is with reading, say, Shakespeare. Personally I opted to take a couple religious studies classes in college because I knew that was something I lacked even though I also knew I was (and still am) an atheist. If that's the approach, then I don't mind it but I don't think schools should be presenting any religion as fact over another. Even if we put the first amendment aside, I don't want schools teaching kids what to think. I want them to teach kids how to think so they can do it for themselves instead of letting other people do it for them.

This is essentially what's happening. It's one Bible passage for each grade that is included as required reading now, examples being the Parable of the Prodigal Son and Psalm 23. These studies are meant to complement the rest of their literary and historical curriculum and to be analyzed for its cultural and English value, similar to Shakespeare.

That being said, I do understand some people's hesitancy. I can totally see some teachers not sticking to purely literary study of these scripture passages as approved by the official curriculum and weaving in explicitly religious and theological teaching.

Texas schools in general do favor Christianity. There's a lot of emphasis on learning about it compared to other religions. Personally, I don't think this is necessarily weird or bad, given that Christianity is by far and way more culturally relevant to the students in that state, and more important for them to understand during a lower/middle grade curriculum that overwhelmingly focuses on America. But I do think there should be neutral study of other major religions touched upon, because it is important for kids to at least be aware of other faiths held by their neighbors.
