You know how canaries were historically brought into coal mines, because if the mine was full of carbon monoxide the canary would die first and the miners would be able to escape before they died too?
I just found the greatest thing.
This is a canary resuscitator.
When the miners notice the canary getting sick with carbon monoxide poisoning, they can close that circular hatch so no more gas gets into the canary cage, and open the valve on that oxygen tank to keep the canary breathing. In other words, they made a spacesuit for birds.
By immediately giving the canary access to clean air, the miners can save it from the poison. The bird lives. To be clear, this is not for economic purposes, this was specifically created because the miners felt bad and wanted to save the bird.
Isnât that just the perfect demonstration of what humans are like? We started sacrificing small creatures to save ourselves, and then felt bad and spent our valuable resources on saving the critters too. Because yeah the canary was the only way to test for CO, but itâs a living creature too, dammit!
Union watches out for its members.
Every time someone tells me they hate Shakespeare (which is frequently, bc people who hate Shakespeare r usually very proud of it and they need to tell me immediately when they learn that I'm a Shakespeare actor) I enact a sort of self contained stoic ritual where I remind myself that I do not need to be defending the most read and lauded and hegemonic English writer of all time even though I KNOW that they've only half-read Romeo and Juliet when they were 14 in a lame English class and formed a grudge and never changed their opinion. I have that knowledge and I allow it to wash over me and leave me undisturbed
there was a disastrous performance of Macbeth at the Old Vic by Peter OâToole and apparently there was this one part in the play one night where a Servant comes in and should say âYour wife, my lord, is deadâ but what ACTUALLY happened was
Servant: âŠMy wife, my lord, is dead.
Macbeth: Well, what about my wife?
Servant: Oh yeah. Sheâs dead too.
Macbeth:Â
Servant: Thereâs a lot of it about.
This is like a Monty Python skit.
ok last hamlet post sorry. but tbh i kind of buy the theory that the ghost is actually an evil spirit
what kind of father apparently suffering in purgatory for the many wrongs he committed in his life that he now must atone for condemns his child to a miserably short and violent rest of his life by making him swear to enact vengeance for a crime that hasnât even been proven? btw purgatory theologically is not like some inbetween place for people who werenât all the way good but not all the way bad. itâs purification for heaven. meaning if someone is there, they are heaven bound!! itâs not a maybe! so what heaven bound soul would ever come back from the dead to sow discord among the living and to do it with the hands of his own son? anyway
i do think claudius is a much more interesting character than we give him credit for because heâs so close to being repentant. at the beginning of the play heâs talking about how sharply poloniusâ comments lash his conscience. at the very beginning! this is an aside! to us! it is not for anyone but the audience to hear! then after hamletâs play his reaction is anger, horror. because heâs almost caught. almost caught because somehow hamletâs plot works, somehow claudius feels so guilty that even seeing the play makes him sick to his stomach. but what is crazy about this is that his line of thinking is, maybe I should get caught. he almost tells the truth. like think about claudiusâ prayer!! heâs desperate! he doesnât know if he can be forgiven! if thereâs enough snow in the heavens to wash him clear! heâs tormented! but what can he do now? heâs the king and heâs married and heâs gone so far and how can he change now? is he too far gone? would he have to give up the very things for which he murdered his own brother? the question is too hard and too unpleasant and so he does the easy thing and gives up. and he goes and tries to kill hamlet twice and his wife drinks poison in front of him and he says nothing. heâs made his choice. but for a moment the play almost changes

Hamlet adaptation where Hamlet is a vlogger and all his soliloquies are breakdowns he uploads to YouTube
⊠I am unironically here for this
this is the funniest thing Iâve ever seen in my life
This is - legitimately - my favourite delivery of Shakespeare I have EVER seen (and I have seen some good-ass productions yo, in the Globe Theatre itself even). Like seriously, even though the words are unchanged, heâs stripped away ALL of the archaic pretense and assumed grandeur of ~presenting the bard~ that makes even the most wildly talented of actors and innovative of productions inherently inaccessible to a modern audience. Like, theyâre still great, they can still communicate the message and (some) of the nuance, but theyâre still always a step removed from being identifiable to any viewerâs lived experience. Theyâre still always reciting 15th century poetry. But this guy? This guy is like, screw iambic pentameter, to hell with being precious about the material, HOW WOULD AN ACTUAL PERSON SAY THIS SHIT?
Like this. And itâs beautiful. Itâs beautiful to hear a soliloquy I loved so much already, and have it come to life in a way it never, ever, did before. I feel like I grasp his motivations, his twists and turns, no longer on an academic level but on a visceral, instinctive one. Because heâs presenting his mental and emotional journey in a way that speaks honestly, like a real person.
So yeah, this shit post? I love it. Deeply and sincerely.
okay i know iâm Back On My Bullshit but hear me out: found footage macbeth
so much of the plot of macbeth revolves around⊠the fact that we donât get to watch the plot of macbeth. we never get to see macbeth and banquo win a battle; we never get to see macbeth kill the king; we donât see his coronation; we donât watch lady macbeth die. so much of macbeth is whatâs told through the cracks - we just get the lead-up to and aftermath of events.
so: found footage macbeth. security videos and transcripts from dunsinane and inverness. interviews with castle guards, lady macbethâs handmaidens, figures like ross and lennox. news articles about the deaths of duncan and macbeth⊠battle casualty counts⊠whatever lady m wrote on those papers during her sleepwalking scenes⊠young siwardâs school records⊠i could go on
The scene between Macbeth and Banquo at the beginning taking place via night-vision cameras affixed to their helmets. The witches would look just amazingly terrifying.
