I do think everyone needs to get more hyped about Dick saying he wished Jason stayed dead in Brothers in Blood. Like to be entirely honest with you that is a top twenty-five Dick Grayson moment to me.

HI!! I was wondering if maybe you could help clear up some fanon vs. canon debates about Tim Drake?? 😅 I'm a newer fan, and I was curious if you could discuss some common misconceptions about him and his character? (Such as the whole "stalker" thing, or never sleeps/always drinking multiple cups of coffee, that sort of stuff!)
Thank you!!
I would absolutely love to, you have no idea what a treat you just gave me lol. I’ve been too lazy/ ADHD (+ there are people I think are much better at it) to write my long form posts in a long while but this gives me an excuse lol plus I LOVE correcting misinformation. That being said, prepare for a long response. In fact, I’m just gonna….pop a cut here preemptively 😅😂
Baby Stalker Tim Drake: the whole “Tim followed the bats around taking pictures of them at night as a child” thing is fanon, however, it’s fanon that kind of fits in with canon, because Tim is 100% a stalker, or at least has stalker tendencies. It’s kind of a key aspect of his character. The first time we meet Tim, he’s following Bruce around gathering evidence that he’s having some kind of mental spiral, and then tracking dick down, breaking into his house, etc. Tim is a busybody who WILL involve himself in things that aren’t his business/don’t need to involve him, and he has an extremely poor concept of boundaries. He breaks into both Dick and Steph’s houses more than once, and probably other people I don’t know off the top of my head. He’s not trying to be malicious, but definitely is way too up in people’s business. (Editing this later to make myself more clear because there IS an important distinction I forgot to make. Tim isn’t a *stalker* stalker, like with the negative connotation, because usually no one he’s doing it to is bothered/offended by it. Because let’s be real, it’s usually Dick, and Dick is just as crazy about tim as tim is about him.)
Coffee addict Tim Drake: I’m honestly not entirely sure where this one comes from. I think it’s probably just a “he’s out all night, so he doesn’t get a lot of sleep, therefore caffeine” thing, but Tim isn’t shown on panel drinking coffee that often. Like….i can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve seen it verbally mentioned, although he might occasionally have a mug of what is probably coffee/tea. He DOES drink canned soda type beverages, usually a dc invention called zesti, on panel fairly often. Barbara, however, IS a coffee addict. Everything people projected on Tim in that regard is canonically much more aligned to Barbara. As for the sleeplessness, I’m hesitant to say this, because I’ve seen people going too far the other way and taking the “borderline narcoleptic” joke and pushing it as canon that he gets an over abundance of sleep, but Tim actually often falls asleep in weird places/situations. It’s more due to being out patrolling at night than any kind of sleep disorder, but he’s been shown falling asleep in class, when his girlfriend was trying to tell him she cheated on him, on multiple rooftops, on a stakeout, on a roller coaster…etc. He’s getting sleep even if he’s not getting it at night, is what I’m saying lol.
Tim’s parents being cartoonishly evil, often physically abusive OR the opposite and being amazing and perfect-Tim’s biological parents are not ideal, but they’re not EVIL either. They don’t hate him, they’ve never laid hands on him, he was not left home alone fully to fend for himself at a ridiculously young age, etc. However they are also not amazing parents that did no wrong, either. While they were emotionally neglectful when he was young (you’ll see people argue about this, but the 90s batbible explicitly states them to be so) all of his physical needs were met. He was never hungry, he attended boarding school instead of staying home alone (and likely had nannies before that, although it isn’t explicitly stated in canon), they called and wrote occasionally, etc. after Janet dies and Jack wakes up from his coma, he still doesn’t have much of a real interest in Tim (also in the batbible), but they do love each other. I personally consider some of the stuff Jack does and says to be emotionally abusive, but others have different opinions.
Morally gray Tim Drake- this doesn’t really have any basis in canon, unless you’re drawing from very specific, often OOC, comics. Tim actually has a VERY strong, kind of rigid, moral code. He’s a Good Kid™️ and also really believes in Bruce’s no killing rule/ the way Bruce handles things. He’s not constantly on the edge of becoming a supervillain at every minor inconvenience.
Titans tower incident- fanon has REALLY latched on to this and made it so much bigger than it was. Tim and Jason did have a confrontation at titans tower, but it was not near as big of a deal as fanon will have you believing lol. Jason surprise attacked Tim, trying to prove something. They fought, and Jason won, but Jason didn’t totally and completely dominate Tim imo. Tim was bleeding from the nose at the end of their fight, but he wasn’t totally decimated. Jason did ask if Tim still thought he was a better Robin, and Tim said yes, little shit that he is lol. The throat slitting incident that gets brought up in these fics a lot is actually from a completely different comic, and was originally hush pretending to be Jason but was retconned into Jason pretending to be hush pretending to be Jason, lol. At the end of the fight, Tim isn’t afraid of Jason or triggered by him or anything like that. He really doesn’t take the incident that seriously. Jason actually walks away from the fight with a deeper respect for Tim, and wondering how he would’ve turned out if he had Tim’s support system.
Dick wanted to send Tim to Arkham- didn’t happen. He suggested Tim see a therapist. If I’m remembering correctly, it was literally a therapist in metropolis, so completely unrelated to Arkham. This one doesn’t even make sense, as Arkham is an asylum for the CRIMINALLY insane. Tim’s not a criminal, lol.
Tim grew up next door to Wayne manor/Tim isn’t a Gotham kid- After Jack wakes up from his coma, Tim does convince him to buy the house next door. I can’t remember if it’s ever actually canonically called Drake manor. Before living there in Bristol, though, Tim grew up in Gotham.
These are the ones I can think of right now right off the top of my head, but there’s probably really obvious big ones I’m forgetting. If you ever have a question about something specific (you, anon, and anyone reading this) please feel free to ask. I promise to try not to be too intense about it, in a fandom with this much canon material, it’s very very easy to get mixed up, and fanon is PREVALENT here. I won’t judge anyone who is wanting to know what’s what!! 💖💖 hope this wasn’t too much info lol.

So it’s widely accepted within the fandom that Jason Todd likes to read, and as someone who has read a lot of his comics, there are lots of instances of Jason making references to literature throughout the years.
But do you know who else has made many many references to literature over the years? Who is canonically a Shakespeare nerd with a particular passion for seeing Shakespeare performed? Who consistently is depicted with floor to ceiling book shelves in his room, and who had a whole arc in Rebirth about his favourite book from childhood which massively inspired him? RICHARD JOHN MOTHERFUCKING GRAYSON. I love Jason, but there are not enough fandom references to Canonical Bookworm and Shakespeare Nerd Dick Grayson for my liking.
I’m not even saying we should take away Jason’s status as the resident bookworm (sure it might be slightly over-exaggerated in fanon, but I do think removing it as a trait entirely could lead to some narratives which are accidentally (or purposefully) classist, and it’s not like there’s no canon evidence to support it anyway) — but I do think that there is a lot of potential in recognising Dick’s own canonical interest in literature. Just think of the arguments about Hamlet! They’d be insufferable!
Not sure why it's a new trend among fic readers to assume if the fic has not been posted within the week it's inappropriate to comment on it, like the fic has to be hot out of the oven to give feedback for.
I got a comment on a fic that is less than a year old and it was mostly an apology for being a comment on an "old fic" and how late they were in commenting.
Just comment on the fic. Doesn't matter how old it is.
In twenty years we will look back on the post-Epsteingate era of comics the way readers today look at the post-9/11 era.
When talking about Epsteingate, a few facts are always on my mind.
One in five girls and one in six boys are victims of sexual abuse before the age of eighteen.
Across all ages, almost half of all women are victims of sexual assault.
For both of the above, the majority of perpetrators were people that the victims knew and trusted.
As for trafficking, Epstein trafficked some 1200 girls. The national human trafficking hotline claims to have identified 21,865 victims in 2024 alone, while their all-time statistic is in the hundreds of thousands. (Frustratingly, they separate the number of cases of sex trafficking from cases of labor trafficking, but list the victims only in aggregate. I thus cannot be sure how many of these victims were trafficked for sex, at least not by HTHL statistics alone).
From these facts, I think I can make the case that Epsteingate was not exceptional in its character. Sexual abuse and exploitation is not the sole purview of a select few. It is endemic to our culture, an inevitable fixture of an economy wherein the body is a commodity and there are classes of people who are culturally and socially denied the power to defend themselves.
But that's not the cultural reckoning we're seeing right now, is it?
This media spotlight could have been a launchpad to critique this element of our political economy. Instead, the new generation of opportunists, in accidental collaboration with their bourgeoisie, have rallied around the phrase "the Epstein class". Peddlers of the phrase will tell miracle stories of how this scandal is finally opening their rightist friends and family's eyes to the class the left rails against. But the phrase is only so readily accepted because it is bereft of meaning. The "Epstein class" is not united by its relationship to production. It is a category of person who commits a crime, namely child sexual exploitation. And everyone who hears the phrase maps onto it the sort of person they associate with that crime. Thus, the leftist opportunist says "the Epstein class" and means "the bourgeoisie," while the reactionary says "the Epstein class" and means "the fifth column of Jews and degenerates." (As always, the right's enemy is also not defined by its relationship to production). Which meaning will win out? Well, with every powerful person in the country scrambling to find a scapegoat for the scandal, I'm sure you can guess.
Thus, unto the fandom side of things. Following the cultural trend, DC's reaction to the Epstein shock repeatedly portrays the problem as exceptional and as arising from outside the culture. The other day, Supergirl premiered, and showed the titular superheroine defending Earth from sadistic aliens called the Brigands, who sustain themselves solely by defiling the women and girls of other cultures. Meanwhile, the ongoing Absolute line of comics depict a setting ruled by a shadowy cabal of wealthy elites. Joker in this setting tortures and mutilates babies to maintain his appearance in a beat-for-beat retelling of the adrenochrome harvesting conspiracy. That conspiracy itself is a modern repackaging of blood libel. Liberal cape fans are singing the praises of both of these works, calling them a shot across the bow from pop culture against the Epstein class. Which Epstein class? No doubt capital will make it out of this one unscathed.
I would love to see DC grapple with the sort of cultural reckoning I touched on earlier. I wish I could see stories really dig into how the commodification of women and children's bodies permeates the entire culture. Not because of evil foreigners or hidden elites, but because of the culture itself, because of the pressure toward dehumanization in everyone who desires a commodity. I wish I could see comics get into just how damn prevalent and unexceptional it all is — more people are sexually abused as kids than have blonde hair, for crying out loud. But it'll never happen. Would Eddie Berganza write that comic? What about Scott Lobdell? Geoff Johns? Warren Ellis, Jason Latour, Scott Allie? Would Charles Brownstein fight for the right to write it? Would the corporation that defended and promoted these men knowing damn well what they did, even having it on camera, publish it without watering it down until there was no message left? Would the millions of readers who are themselves guilty of this exact behavior look in the damned mirror and see themselves for what they are without pitching a fit and threatening the author?
No. Easier to make it a big spectacle and blame it on someone else.
the thing is that bruce IS that tweet about crying begging in the rain for a crumb of pussy that's your role as a man when he's in real relationships with women so you could forgive dick for assuming that because bruce is not greeting him with hundreds of roses he must not be in love with him. however Bruce is a 40 to 50 year old man whom we could charitably describe as "a little fucked up" and the last man he had a serious relationship with was. harvey dent. and that was one of those devastating homoerotic entanglements a la british boarding school novels that you don't tell your respective wives about when you meet back up at reunion. so he has not been making overtures the way he would if dick were a woman because well dick is a man right? and furthermore he's dick grayson he knows bruce better than anyone else on earth he doesn't want or need to be told these things. (he does.)
it's hard because Bruce IS very reticent about his feelings and emotionally constipated and standoffish and he does often communicate in grunts. but he also feels things incredibly deeply and if you forget that you miss half his character. to be honest it's BECAUSE he feels things so deeply that he's so bad at articulating those feelings. he's bad at finding the words and he's also having 18 conversations with himself in his head to the point that when he has to have the actual conversation NOT with himself he forgets he hasn't already communicated what he needs to.
so the whole time dick is like well I'm sure he doesn't feel the same way Bruce is out here battling armies of demons in his head trying to keep himself from doing something insane like buying dick a plane and filling it with roses or tying him to a bed and lavishing his entire body with kisses or purchasing a furnace and learning the vernuil method so he can craft a sapphire that perfectly matches dick's eyes. love languages are a crock but it is quite difficult to be trying to express yourself via gifts and actions when the object of your affection hates receiving money from you and also you save each other's lives regularly. hard to top that one.
