Iād like to draft my official love letter to the original artstyle of the Dixon run. Scott McDaniel and Karl Story donāt get the credit they deserve.
I get why. Itās sketchy at best and ugly at worst. But for Blüdhaven, and for this version of Dick, it just works so well.
Thereās so much energy and motion in panels. I feel like energy in āprettierā styles is often sacrificed for aesthetics. Here, the angles, the impression of movement, even the contortion of facial features to express the emotion of the time, are everything. And it leads to so many fantastic flips:
And the lighting has to be some of my favorite, too. While, again, itās sometimes a sore to stare at, it gets at the feeling of a firefight in ways I canāt describe. The flash of weapons isnāt exactly easy on the eyes, and trying to make everything āeasy on the eyesā is what makes the comic world lose its edge. But I feel this:
The expression on Dickās face, the slight fish eye, the hard-to-track lining due to the homogeneity of the coloration. Itās confusing, and dramatic, and active ā all qualities a gun fight should have.
Other action shots are similar. Loud and chaotic and every piece of them doing something. There are items messily flying everywhere. Thereās a weight to Dick, both in his getting dragged out of the room on the left and when he hits the ground on the right. It makes me feel the oof, you know?
Iām sorry, I just really like this vibe, and I donāt think it gets enough credit because itās not the kind of thing you look at and go āooh, pretty!ā
Itās not. But itās exactly the kind of sketchy, rough and tumble vibe that suits this early Nightwing and this early Blüdhaven so well, and it just makes me happy.
