WHY DID THIS HAVE TO END
OH MY GODDDDDDDDDDD
Why did “be critical of your media” turn into “find all its flaws and hate it” why did people become allergic to FUN
Because people confuse “critical as in critical thinking” with “critical as in criticizing something,” so they think that “look for something bad, no matter how far-fetched” is what “being critical” means.
They also don’t realize that “literary criticism” means…
Okay. What literary criticism IS, is like taking a mechanical clock apart to see all the gears and learn how it fits together and approach your next clock with more knowledge of what makes it tick.
What they THINK literary criticism means is, you take the clock apart and beat all the pieces with a hammer, then scream at it because it doesn’t tick for you the way it used to.
OMG SOMEBODY PUT IT IN WORDS
It’s all well and good to use “be critical of what you consume” to mean “don’t follow things blindly and acknowledge their flaws” but this mindset fails to take into account that everything has flaws. An unproblematic fave is just a fave you haven’t looked at from all angles yet. If you go through life like this hoping to find something morally pure to consume you’re just going to be miserable.

ARROW CAPACITY KILLED ME
not to talk about da2 in 2021 but it still bothers the hell out of me when people pretend like fenris is either brooding or righteously furious and nothing else. he makes jokes all the time! he laughs at all of hawkes, and giggles every time they flirt with him. he has a sarcastic response to most of the weird insensitive shit the other companions say. he’s only upset when faced with his trauma (which. he lives in his ex-master’s mansion in the “city of chains” that has giant statues of crying slaves and slavers wandering the streets of every neighborhood at night) and needled by the other companions in dialogue. hes a whole person. and he responds reasonably to most things imo and when he overreacts he recognizes that and goes out of his way to apologize

There is a reason for this though!
The original tweet summarizes it pretty well. Fanfic tends to be popular among certain types of neurodivergent people (aka people most likely to read excessively as a child, and have burnout as an adult) for the same reasons that we tend to hyperfixate–neurochemical signaling (I hope I’m using that phrase correctly). What I mean is, for people who are really dependent on changes in dopamine/serotonin/neurotransmitter levels, who have low levels or wonky neural reward systems (perhaps the most common types of neurodivergence)…people like us rely on dependable external sources of those neurochemicals. In order to function, we spend a lot of our free time trying to level out our brain chemistry using things that can reliably bring us a steady stream of joyful moments (rewards) without costing too much of the mental effort that is already in short supply.
significantly: the investment of reading has to be balanced with a steady “return on investment”–and this return has to start fairly quickly. because again, we don’t have a lot of attention/energy to invest on tiring things. we have perpetual “low batteries” in that regard.
that doesn’t mean these stories are “simple,” or that they lack complexity or value–only that the reward has to come in short regular intervals, and it has to have a low “upfront cost.” which is why fanfic stories are so perfectly formulated for neurodivergent readers–they are often beautifully written, but skip a lot of the upfront costs (of introducing new characters, of world-building, of getting the audience emotionally connected to the story elements).
the nature of fanfiction is that the reader has a pre-existing relationship with this world and these characters. that–combined with the shorter average length of fics–means that fan fics very quickly start “rewarding” the reader in a way that traditional fiction struggles to. that’s not a bad thing! and maybe it’s something more traditionally published writers should be paying attention to.
Fanfic, as a genre, has been uniquely helpful and accessible to many neurodivergent readers who would otherwise struggle to immerse themselves in stories. I’m glad so many of you have found a way to love and enjoy reading again! The important thing is that you are spending time inside stories you love–the way those stories are published or presented to the world is just one detail.

All right Dragon Age fandom, I need your help. I am so confused by the Kirkwall map. I’ve been trying to figure out what’s going on with the geography since I played the game and the map just isn’t making sense to me. Main issue is where exactly are the waterways and caves. Lowtown is described as “a pit” shaped part of town that still has caves that people live in. Is that U shaped part “le pit”? How are people getting from Gamlen’s house to Main Lowtown? What is that other white/cleared out space between Gamlen’s house and the darkened city area? Does the Gallows water way lead to the main mouth that leads to the sea? Please help me, I’ll draw the first 3 blog’s OC’s.
I spoke to a geologist about the game map, and even they said it didn’t make sense - so I did the best I could to transform the game map to a more overhead map to get a sense of the landmass.
This map was created with the idea that Kirkwall is located on a man made river delta due to the quarry that Lowtown was and also explains why the Wounded Coast became so “wounded” with shipwrecks. And with essentially a dormant volcano (Sundermount) nearby. As for the pit that Lowtown is, think of how a quarry is formed, they largely end up looking like this:
So imagine those waterways breaking up lowtown into sections being a man made waterway carved into the quarry to connect out to sea.If you walk around in game, particularly the forge, you’ll see waterways underneath as well. So that adds to why I think that “u shape” are just water ways or a man made river
The labels are for the following locations: A: Darktown B: the Docks C: The Gallows D: Lowtown E: Hightown I have it in my head they have bridges connecting the sections of Lowtown. And the two locations for Hightown are really to separate Viscount’s Keep and the Chantry from the rest of Hightown. But also gives a reason for why they say when Anders blew the Chantry up it “changed the tide” because the cliff it sits on basically broke off and dropped into the water.
Those two orange dotted lines is to represent the “Chains of Kirkwall” that when up, prevent trade.
Anyway this is the more basic version of the map I made, with all my other labels removed. The more complex one is for the purposes of one of my fics.
I made this map with wonderdraft, in case anyone is wondering.
If someone knowledgeable in geography and map making wants to correct me, please by all means. I know nothing about realistic geography and the formation that might have happened, though I don’t know how realistic you can get given Kirkwall sits on a primeval thaig filled with red lyrium that is likely connected to some Red Lyrium infected Titan. And ya know there’s magic - but have at it!
I don’t know who made this image, I downloaded it at some point from a post that doesn’t exist anymore today.
I don’t know how accurate this is but it makes sense to me that the chains connect to the Gallows, assuming that once upon a time it wasn’t a mage prison but a fortress to protect the city.
This is based on this [concept art]:
I nearly did make the chains connect to the Gallows if it weren’t for the opening sequence of DA2 has Hawke & Family & Aveline sailing past the chains of Kirkwall toward the Gallows. So I think instead those chains connect to a Lighthouse of sorts.
Also explains how the history of Kirkwall has the previous Viscount (Threnhold) able to keep the chains up - even against the Chantry and Templar Order’s wishes. Otherwise, if it WAS connected to the Gallows, they’d be able to control it more.
That does make sense! Especially because this view exists:
If that’s the Gallows, they are indeed not connected to the chains.
I can’t believe the dialogue matched this terrible glitch perfectly istg
